Local govt dept writes to Mohali Commissioner, seeks action report on boundary expansion
The letter, a copy of which was shared to The Indian Express, comes a week after Mohali Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi warned the Punjab government that if a decision to expand the boundaries is not taken within a month, he will approach the high court.
The proposal for expanding the municipal limits was approved nearly four years ago during the Congress government. Notably, even then, Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu was serving as the Mayor of the city. Areas such as Balongi, Baliyari, Badh Majra, TDI City, Sectors 90, 91, 82 and others were proposed to be brought under the Municipal Corporation's (MC's) jurisdiction. However, the process came to a halt following the Aam Aadmi Party's rise to power in 2022.
The delay prompted social activist Ram Kumar to file a civil writ petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The high court had directed the Punjab government to take a final decision by May 25. Although the government submitted an affidavit in the court, no concrete steps have been taken so far.
In his letter dated May 26, he expressed displeasure over the government's inaction, stating that 'despite repeated correspondence and sufficient passage of time, no action has been taken'. He warned that he would move court with a contempt of court petition and even consider filing a defamation suit against the department.
Taking note of the seriousness, the department has now instructed the Municipal Commissioner to urgently submit a report. The letter specifically refers to the legal notice issued by Ram Kumar and emphasises that since the matter is sub-judice, the report must be sent without delay.
Speaking to The Indian Express, social activist Ram Kumar said, 'I have continuously attached copies of High Court orders with my representations, but the government has remained silent. Now I am left with no option but to file for defamation'.
When contacted, Mohali Municipal Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh confirmed awareness of the matter. 'This issue is under active consideration, and we will be responding to the department's letter very soon,' he stated.

Congress will rule TG until 2034: Revanth
Hyderabad: In a veiled attack against BRS president K Chandrashekar Rao and former minister G Jagadishwar Reddy, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said that bringing Godavari waters to Thungathurti was not as simple as 'pouring soda in a glass'. He took a swipe at the two leaders' claim of achieving that within three days. Revanth Reddy was talking after launching distribution of food security cards in Suryapet district's Tirumalagiri on Monday. He wondered why the BRS had failed to achieve the feat while being in power for close to a decade. 'That three-feet guy (Suryapet MLA Jagadishwar Reddy) is jumping six-feet to stop the Chief Minister from visiting Thungathurti. He is claiming that if given a chance they would bring Godavari waters to Thungathurti within three days. It is ironic that when people had given them 10 years, they were unable to bring water from Devadula?' he said. While cautioning Jagadishwar Reddy that in the next Assembly elections, BRS would face a complete rout in the erstwhile Nalgonda district, a similar fate awaits them in their last remaining bastion-Suryapet. 'Bringing water is not like pouring soda in a glass. You know only one skill, pouring soda in the master's (KCR) glass. You have managed to get your village the status of a mandal but failed to bring suitable offices. There is not even an MRO or a police station in this mandal,' Revanth Reddy said. Revanth Reddy underlined that the Congress party would remain in power until 2034 and make Telangana a $1- trillion economy. Countering the Opposition narrative that people were struggling in long queues to receive 'sanna biyyam', the Chief Minister emphasised that since the present government was providing ample supply of rice to beneficiaries, there was massive response and as a result there were long queues. 'Why didn't the BRS provide ration cards? Why was there no thought of offering a morsel to the poor? Our government is giving ration cards to three crore people. If there were belt shops in villages during the BRS regime, now people would line up for ration cards,' he asserted. He said that the present government had granted 5.6 lakh ration cards to new beneficiaries. 'We have registered the names of 26 lakh people in new ration cards. We have distributed rice to 3.10 crore people,' he explained. Over the government's commitment to women empowerment, the Chief Minister reiterated that women of Self Help Groups (SHG) were contributing to TGSRTC through their 'rental' initiative and the government was supporting them with Rs 21,000 crore by way of loans, through various banks. He announced that the 65 lakh women of SHGs would be receiving two saris each in the upcoming distribution programme. 'After 100 years following British enumeration, we conducted a caste census in Telangana and set an example for the country. Our agitations forced Prime Minister Narendra Modi to incorporate caste enumeration in the census,' he said.

Revanth for Delhi today
Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy will embark on a three-day tour to New Delhi on Tuesday to meet Central ministers to seek their active intervention in resolving issues like water allocations to Telangana and clearances for pending projects. He will also meet the top brass of the Congress and seek their suggestions on implementing 42 per cent reservation for BCs in local body elections. Further, the Chief Minister will also meet legal experts to seek their opinion on promulgating an ordinance on BC quota without any legal wrangles. During his three-day tour from July 15 to 17, the Chief Minister will meet Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil and apprise him of pending water allocations to Telangana from Krishna and Godavari rivers. On the instructions of the Chief Minister, Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy already wrote a letter to Jal Shakti Minister, requesting to resolve the long-pending issue of river water share of Telangana. In the meeting with Patil, the CM will request the minister to immediately give clearance to the projects taken up on Krishna River and provide financial assistance for the construction of projects along with water allocations. In the past, the CM alleged that gross injustice was done to Telangana in river water allocations during the previous government. During its 10-year rule, the KCR government failed miserably in getting rightful water allocations for Telangana from Krishna and Godavari rivers, he pointed out, adding that the Congress government under his leadership was making concerted efforts to get this injustice corrected. The Chief Minister also pointed out that the BRS government agreed to use only 299 TMC of water for Telangana from Krishna River while Andhra Pradesh walked away with 512 TMC. It also ignored all the projects illegally constructed upstream of Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh and remained silent when the AP state diverted Krishna waters arbitrarily, he alleged. Revanth will raise all these issues with Union Jal Shakti Minister and press for their immediate resolution. He will also meet some other Union ministers during his stay in the national capital.

Siddaramaiah alleges protocol violation over Sigandur bridge inauguration
Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has expressed his displeasure over what he termed a 'breach of protocol' in the inauguration of the Sigandur Bridge — the state's largest and the nation's sixth-largest cable-stayed bridge. The Chief Minister stated that he was invited late to the July 14 event and had prior commitments in Vijayapura, prompting him to write to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, requesting a change in schedule. The request, however, was not accommodated. Speaking to the media in Bengaluru, Siddaramaiah said, 'We were not consulted prior to scheduling the inauguration. I personally spoke to Minister Gadkari and he agreed to consider rescheduling, but BJP leaders in the state seem to have pushed ahead.' He added that this disregard of protocol was a matter of concern and that no Congress leaders — including local MLAs and ministers — would attend the event as a mark of protest. In his official communication, Siddaramaiah wrote: 'I was not consulted before finalising the Shivamogga National Highway projects' dedication and foundation ceremony on July 14th, despite my name being included. Due to prior commitments in Vijayapura, I have requested Shri @nitin_gadkari to reschedule the event.' Responding sharply to the Chief Minister's statements, Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka criticized Siddaramaiah, saying, 'While the people of the Sharavathi backwaters region are celebrating the fulfilment of a 60-year dream, decorating their homes and villages for the bridge inauguration, the Chief Minister is creating unnecessary controversy.' Ashoka further remarked, 'Is this frustration because the Modi-led central government accomplished in one term what Congress couldn't in 60 years? Or did Rahul Gandhi instruct you not to attend the inauguration? When the party high command calls, you rush to Delhi in special flights, but you won't attend a historic inauguration in Karnataka?' Calling Siddaramaiah's comments 'unfortunate,' Ashoka said, 'The people of Karnataka are truly unlucky to have a leader who chooses political point-scoring over joining citizens in a moment of pride.'
