
The Sale Of A Top-Rated Power Company Signals A Shrinking Market
Flick achieved a standout satisfaction score of 71% (very satisfied), earning a People's Choice award. Flick was recently sold to Meridian Energy – the parent company of Powershop, which failed to meet the People's Choice standard in 2025.
In contrast to Flick, Powershop, a seven-time People's Choice winner since 2015, has seen a notable drop in satisfaction – from 67% in 2024 to just 60% this year, pushing it out of the top tier for the first time in years.
'Flick has consistently rated well in our surveys, so it's disappointing to see it absorbed by a larger player,' says Jessica Walker, Consumer NZ acting head of research and advocacy.
'Flick customers have been typically among the most satisfied. We don't know what the future holds for Flick customers, but there is a risk it will be consumers who will bear the brunt of reduced competition.'
The poorest performers this year are Pulse Energy (41%), Contact Energy (44%) and Mercury (47%). Contact Energy and Mercury are two of the largest energy providers in the country and are known as 'gentailers', electricity companies that both generate and retail electricity directly to households.
Meridian Energy was the third-best performing power provider in the survey results and notably the highest-ranking of this country's four gentailers.
Frank also earns People's Choice, but sector-wide ambivalence is up
Frank Energy joins Flick in receiving a People's Choice award, with 65% of its customers reporting high satisfaction. However, broader trends across the industry point to a decline in overall positivity and a rise in customer ambivalence.
'More people are rating their power providers as 'just OK' rather than great,' says Walker.
'It's a clear sign that satisfaction is softening, and the market isn't delivering the value or the service that New Zealanders expect.'
Frank's parent company is also a gentailer, Genesis Energy, which falls into the middle-of-the-pack category.
Key findings from the 2025 survey
Value for money scores have dipped across much of the sector.
Fewer problems were reported.
Amongst those who did, there was a slight drop in satisfaction with the retailers' handling of issues.
Confidence in the electricity market is low.
36% say it's working poorly for New Zealanders.
Signs of hardship are rising.
More missed payments, overdue fees, borrowing to pay bills and disconnections.

Walker urged consumers not to stay loyal to underperforming providers.
'Power is the same no matter who you buy it from – but price and service vary widely,' she says. 'There's no reason to stick with an expensive or unhelpful provider.'

KiwiSaver: Kiwis shift billions from big banks to boutique operators
KiwiSaver members are quitting big bank providers and shifting their investments to independent and boutique operators. Data for the most recent financial year, compiled from documents filed on the Disclose register, shows that Milford Asset Management was the biggest winner, with almost $1.5 billion of net funds transferred in. In total, there is about $120b invested in KiwiSaver. Generate was second, Simplicity third and Kernel fourth. ANZ said the market was "extremely competitive". "Across the industry, a total of 163,000 KiwiSaver members transferred providers in the year to March 2025, up 22%. "Those two providers also feature heavily in the top of the league tables regularly. As a provider, you need to have strong brand awareness, marketing, and lead generation functions - but the performance would help. "If you talk to some of the KiwiSaver providers that do well and receive earned media, they will typically see larger than normal switches in days that follow - so that would at least anecdotally support at least some degree of performance chasing in the KiwiSaver cohort." Milford head of KiwiSaver Murray Harris said its long-term returns were helping to draw customers in. Morningstar reports showed Milford among the top performers over three, five and 10-year periods. He said there tended to be more interest in provider switching in the middle of the year, when people were encouraged to check their funds and ensure they had contributed enough to get the full government contribution. "Members are quite focused on their KiwISaver and get a reminder to look at it. We often see a boost this time of year." He said KiwiSaver balances had become more significant for many members, and it made sense that they were looking at what options were available to them. ADVERTISEMENT People considering switching should compare long-term returns, he said, not just the most recent quarter or year. "We've seen some very specialist funds do very well, gold and crypto are doing well at the moment… don't just look at the short-term returns but the long-term. "How consistent are they at providing those market-leading returns throughout time? Five and ten years would be the minimum ... These are very long-term investments, so the longer the track record you look at, the better." People were more likely to move when markets were performing well, he said. "We've had strong market returns almost every day since the wobble in April, that makes people more confident to transfer. When markets are not doing well, they tend not to transfer because they think they'll crystallise the loss with one provider." But as long as people were moving to a similar fund type, they would not be in a worse position for shifting providers. "You might do better if you recover the fall in value driven by the market sooner." ADVERTISEMENT Kernel founder Dean Anderson said people were becoming more engaged and realising that KiwiSaver wasn't just a bank product. "Now that education and awareness is growing, people realise there are better solutions out there." But compared to the number of people who switched for a better deal on their power or phone, he said, switching activity was still very low. "I think we should expect to see that increase. As balances get bigger, people think, 'Am I better off elsewhere? Are there better fees, better service, better values that align with mine?" The growth of smaller, newer providers showed people had confidence in the scheme, he said. "There's confidence that these players are good, stable, growing businesses. You don't have to be with the bank."

NCEA Reform Presents Opportunity For Hospitality
Hospitality New Zealand (Hospitality NZ) acknowledges the Government's proposal to replace the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) with a new set of national qualifications. Alongside a number of changes - including NCEA levels 1, 2 and 3 being replaced - the Government's proposal includes a commitment to work with industry to develop better vocational pathways so students are getting the skills relevant to certain career pathways. Te Papa forecasts $13m deficit, downgrades visitor targets
'Te Papa does not generate enough funding to cover required capital investments to maintain Te Papa's building and experience assets [...] to manage inflationary costs, we will be examining ways to deliver our services as efficiently as possible in line with the legislated functions set out in the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa Act 1992.' As a Crown Entity, it receives $44 million in funding each year from the Government and must raise at least $30 million on top of that to stay afloat, made up of partnerships, philanthropy and donations, and its commercial activities like corporate functions. 'Te Papa's commercial revenue is impacted by the current economic conditions, with the most significant commercial revenue stream, corporate functions also being impacted by the reduction in Public Sector spend.' 'New revenue streams will come from building on existing offerings like guided tours and paid-for exhibitions.' It is considering charging for more experiences, Camp said, but maintained entry to Te Papa will always remain free for New Zealanders. As for whether the entity would be seeking further Government funding to support its financial recovery, Camp said they are 'always involved in active dialogue with our monitoring agency (Ministry for Culture and Heritage) about what we deliver and the resources required'. The museum is hoping for a 3% increase in international visitor entry, citing growth from international markets as a 'new focus' for the organisation. Board Chair Chris Swasbrook said Te Papa earns almost half its annual income itself and has a 'continual focus on achieving operating efficiencies for the taxpayer'. Photo / Mark Mitchell While the museum's financials paint a less than rosy picture, it continues to perform well in visitor satisfaction with more than 97% of adult visitors reporting being 'satisfied' to 'extremely satisfied' for overall museum experience during their visit in the last financial year. Last month it was announced as the number one tourist attraction in New Zealand for the second year running and was named in the top 1% 'Best of the Best attractions worldwide' by Trip Advisor. The tourism sector continues to struggle post-Covid, with the latest International Visitor Survey showing spending by international tourists had jumped 9.2% in the last year to $12.2 billion but still remains below pre-Covid levels. In Wellington specifically, the sector contributed $862.9m towards the capital city's GDP in 2024, making up 2.5% of Wellington's economic output, Infometrics data shows. In 2000, that number was 3.2%. Tourism hasn't grown as a sector in Wellington at the same level of other centres, with the economic output in Wellington City's tourism sector increasing by only 2.2% in 2024, compared with an increase of 10.2% for New Zealand as a whole.
