Neha Bhasin Recalls Suicide Attempt At 20 After Being Fat-Shamed: 'I Took Half A Bottle Of...'
Singer Neha Bhasin opens up about a dark chapter in her early career, revealing she attempted suicide at 20 after being fat-shamed despite weighing only 50 kg.
Singer Neha Bhasin, whose powerful voice has defined songs like Kuch Khaas, Asalaam-e-Ishqum, Jag Ghoomeya, and more recently Dunki, opened up about a traumatic chapter from her early career. In a heartfelt conversation on Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa's Bharti TV podcast, Bhasin revealed that she attempted suicide at the age of 20, following relentless body-shaming—despite weighing only 50 kilos at the time.
Neha was then part of India's first all-girl pop band Viva, formed in 2002, which included Seema Ramchandani, Pratichee Mohapatra, Mahua Kamat, and Anushka Manchanda. Just a year into her career, in 2003, Neha was put on fat burners. At that young age, she admitted, she had little understanding of what those pills could do to her body or mind.
Recounting the moment that pushed her over the edge, Neha said, 'Conference room mein jaise ek bada TV hota hai, usne us TV par video daal diya aur mere pet par circle karte hue bola, 'See, you are so fat. Because of which, we can't release the video.' I was 50 kg at that time."
She added, 'I remember, I went home aur gusse mein aadhi se zyada bottle fat burners ki kha li thi. That was my way of trying to commit suicide and for two days, I was throwing up. The band did not know what has happened."
The incident stemmed from a confrontation with the TV channel Viva was signed with. While trying to raise concerns, Neha found herself silenced and humiliated—particularly by one man who allegedly harassed her during the meeting. 'There was a major fight with the channel. I went to speak with the head, and this other man came in—he harassed me."
This isn't the first time Neha has opened up about her mental and physical health. In 2022, she revealed being diagnosed with low progesterone. And in 2024, she shared her ongoing battle with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a condition that has affected her since her teens. 'It makes it difficult to get up and live for 15 days each month," she had written in a deeply personal note on social media.
