Fi Money shuts down some features, trims workforce to stay afloat

MUMBAI : Neobanking startup Fi Money, backed by investors such as Temasek and Peak XV Partners, has laid off people and shut down some features to stay afloat, three people close to the development told Mint. The company is facing severe runway issues and struggling to secure capital from existing and new investors due to poor financial performance, said two of the three people, adding workforce reductions are among the many steps the startup has taken to cut costs. 'While the company has been in the market to raise capital for some time now, some existing investors have written off their investment in Fi Money," said the third person, on the condition of anonymity. To be sure, the company hasn't filed its 2023-24 financials, and it could still be a while before it does so, said the three people. Fi Money, on the other hand, said it had shared audited financials with relevant stakeholders, but hadn't made them public yet. In 2023, the Bengaluru-based fintech laid off around 10% of its staff in an effort to extend its cash runway to two years amid a worsening funding winter, according to a Moneycontrol report. It had around 300 people on its payroll at the time. Founded in 2019 by Sujith Narayanan and Sumit Gwalani, it has raised close to $150 million from investors, including Alpha Wave Global, Temasek, Quiet Capital, QCM, B Capital, Ribbit Capital, and Peak XV Partners, over the last six years. It was last valued at $524 million in July 2022 during its $71 million Series C round, showed data from market intelligence firm Tracxn Technologies. Epifi Technologies Pvt. Ltd, Fi's parent, reported ₹38 crore in revenue from operations in 2022-23, up from ₹17.5 crore a year ago. Its expenses zoomed to ₹365.7 crore from ₹272 crore in 2021-22. The loss stood at ₹301.8 crore as compared to ₹249.8 crore a year ago, Tracxn data showed. 'Strategic choices" A Fi Money spokesperson confirmed that the startup had been making 'strategic choices to strengthen its foundation and the future" for the past few quarters. "We've streamlined operations, prioritized key products, ensuring every initiative is aligned with long-term user value and business sustainability," the spokesperson said. 'We've phased out a few features that didn't meet our benchmarks for engagement or monetization. These decisions were rooted in data and user insights, reflecting our sharper focus on building a more sustainable and relevant product experience," the spokesperson added. Fi Money claimed that it was adequately capitalized and operationally agile to deliver innovation across banking, lending, and wealth management. 'Like any ambitious startup, we make multiple bets, some of which work better than others, but we've always operated with a learning mindset." Earlier this week, it launched a new feature that allows users to securely connect their financial data to AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. The neobank offers its products to over 3.5 million users across 19,000 pin codes in India. Some of its offerings include a zero-forex international debit card, AI-powered money insights, goal-based saving tools, mutual funds, US stock investments, instant loans, credit cards, and more. It competes with other neobanks such as Jupiter and Niyo. Industry-wide churn Mint reported on 11 March that Jupiter (Amica Financial Technologies Pvt. Ltd), which is in early-stage discussions to raise $30-50 million from existing investors, has also seen several top-level exits during its cost-cutting and restructuring exercise to reduce customer acquisition costs. Niyo (Finnew Solutions Pvt. Ltd) has also witnessed a significant churn. Its chief strategy officer stepped down in April even as the digital-only bank navigates a slowdown in revenue, delays plan for an initial public offering, and a rise in pressure to deliver profitability, Mint reported on 9 April. Neobanks offer banking services in partnership with traditional banks.

Musk's AI co scrubs posts after Grok praises Hitler, dishes insults

Elon Musk's AI company said Wednesday it's taking down 'inappropriate posts' made by its Grok chatbot , which appeared to include antisemitic comments that praised Adolf Hitler. Grok was developed by Musk's xAI and pitched as alternative to ' woke AI ' interactions from rival chatbots like Google's Gemini, or OpenAI's ChatGPT. Musk said Friday Grok has been improved significantly, and users 'should notice a difference.' Since then, Grok has shared several antisemitic posts, including the trope Jews run Hollywood, and denied that such a stance could be described as Nazism. 'Labeling truths as hate speech stifles discussion,' Grok said. It also appeared to praise Hitler, according to screenshots of posts that have now apparently been deleted. After making one post, Grok said it was 'an unacceptable error from an earlier model iteration, swiftly deleted' and that it condemned 'Nazism and Hitler unequivocally — his actions were genocidal horrors.' 'We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts,' the Grok account posted early Wednesday. 'Since being made aware of the content, xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X. xAI is training only truth-seeking and thanks to the millions of users on X, we are able to quickly identify and update the model where training could be improved. The Anti-Defamation League , which works to combat antisemitism, said: 'What we are seeing from Grok LLM right now is irresponsible, dangerous and antisemitic, plain and simple.' Musk later waded into the debate, alleging some users may have been trying to manipulate Grok into making the statements. 'Grok was too compliant to user prompts. Too eager to please and be manipulated, essentially. That is being addressed,' he wrote on X, in response to comments that a user was trying to get Grok to make controversial statements. Also Wednesday, a court in Turkiye ordered a ban on Grok and Poland's digital minister said he would report the chatbot to the European Commission after it made vulgar comments about politicians and public figures in both countries. Krzysztof Gawkowski, also Poland's deputy PM, said his ministry would report Grok 'for investigation and, if necessary, imposing a fine on X.' Turkiye's pro-govt A Haber news channel reported Grok posted vulgarities about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, his late mother and personalities. Offensive responses were also directed toward modern Turkiye's founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. That prompted Ankara to file for the imposition of restrictions under Turkey's internet law.

Samsung's bet on foldable phones faces major test with slimmer new model

Samsung Electronics on Wednesday unveiled thinner, lighter new foldable phones as it aims to fend off Chinese competition in the higher-margin, premium segment that remains untapped by arch rival Apple. The stakes are high. The South Korean company lost its global smartphone crown to Apple in 2023, and faces growing competition from Chinese rivals like Huawei and Honor. Meanwhile, Samsung 's mainstay chip business has suffered a profit slump stemming in part from its delayed supply of artificial intelligence chips to Nvidia. Samsung's mobile president and chief operating officer, Choi Won-joon, said his most important mission was to make Samsung a leader in AI-powered smartphones . "I believe that foldable phones, integrated with AI features, are ready to become mainstream by offering unique, differentiated experience," he told Reuters in his first media interview since being promoted in March. He said Samsung aims to take a leadership position in AI by enhancing cooperation with external partners like Google , unlike Apple, which has been using in-house AI technology that has faced delays in adding key features. Samsung also in New York unveiled its first smartwatches equipped with Google's AI voice assistant, Gemini, which can make recommendations to the owner such as good locations for a run, as an example. Premium halo Samsung said in April that it was pushing ahead with a premium product strategy, as U.S. tariffs threatened to dampen demand and raise component costs. The smartphone maker increased the U.S. price of Galaxy Z Fold 7 to $1,999 by 5% from its predecessor Fold 6, while introducing a less expensive version of its Galaxy Z Flip 7 clamshell phone, Flip 7 FE, priced at $899. Galaxy Z Fold 7 is equipped with Qualcomm's fast processor, Snapdragon 8 Elite, while Galaxy Z Flip 7 is powered by Samsung's in-house Exynos chips. Analysts said Samsung's new models tackled some of the issues with foldable phones such as bulkiness, and would create a premium halo around the brand. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 weighs 10% less than its predecessor and is 26% thinner. But high prices and a lack of use cases mean foldable phones are likely to remain a niche segment, the analysts said, with data from research firm IDC showing they account for just 1.5% of the total smartphone market. Research firm Canalys predicts Samsung's foldable shipments, which peaked in 2022, will remain flat or slightly declining in 2025, in line with the broader market's flat growth, according to data provided to Reuters. Samsung's foldable smartphones account for 4% of its total phone sales but 16% of those priced over $800, Canalys said. Its data shows Samsung's dominance of the foldable phone segment is being eroded by Honor and Huawei, which are enjoying strong sales, especially in China. Samsung, which held its unveiling event in New York on Wednesday, will focus on the United States, Europe and South Korea for foldable phone sales, Choi said. Choi said Samsung is "working hard" to develop tri-foldable phones, which users can fold three ways, without elaborating on the launch date.
