ED is harassing state government employees: Tamil Nadu minister Muthusamy
In a statement, he said, 'Last month, ED officials conducted searches at Tasmac headquarters, claiming that it was based on an FIR filed during the previous AIADMK government. However, they did not find any solid evidence. Despite this, they alleged a scam of Rs 1,000 crore.'
The agency is continuing to trouble government employees without proof, Muthusamy added. 'Even after not finding anything, the ED continued raids on the house of Tasmac managing director and a few other places. Again, nothing was seized. However, they continue to harass the employees,' Muthusamy alleged.
The agency is ignoring the Supreme Court's guidelines which is highly condemnable, Muthusamy said. Legal action will be taken against the ED's activities and the state government would always stand by its employees, he added.

ED arrests two in money-laundering case against Sahara Group
NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Sunday said it has arrested two persons, an executive director of Sahara Group chairman's core management team and a long-time associate of the group cum property broker, as part of a money-laundering probe against the Sahara Group and its linked entities. The individuals taken into custody have been identified as Vailaparampil Abraham and Jitendra Prasad Verma, respectively. Abraham played a "key role" in coordinating and facilitating the sale of Sahara Group properties, many of which involved "substantial unaccounted" cash components that were allegedly siphoned off. Verma was "actively involved" in executing several of these property transactions and knowingly assisted in routing large "cash" proceeds generated from these sale transactions, thereby contributing to the concealment and dissipation of the "proceeds of crime", the central agency said in a statement. The ED said it came across "incriminating" evidence, during searches conducted in this case recently, which suggested that the properties of Sahara Group were being disposed of one by one in a "clandestine" manner. Abraham and Verma played a "key role" in the disposal of such properties and assisting the promoters of the Sahara Group in siphoning off the funds, it alleged. The promoters were found to be involved in such malpractices while remaining outside India, the agency claimed. The two arrested persons were produced before a local court in Kolkata on Saturday and the court remanded them to ED custody till July 14, the agency said. The money-laundering case stems from more than 500 FIRs filed by various state police departments. Three FIRs registered against Humara India Credit Cooperative Society Ltd (HICCSL) and others by Odisha, Bihar and Rajasthan police apart from more than 500 such complaints filed against Sahara Group entities and related persons have been analysed by the ED before filing a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The agency alleged that the Sahara Group was running a "Ponzi" scheme through various entities such as HICCSL, Sahara Credit Cooperative Society Limited (SCCSL), Saharayn Universal Multipurpose Cooperative Society (SUMCS), Stars Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited (SMCSL), Sahara India Commercial Corporation Ltd (SICCL), Sahara India Real Estate Corporation Ltd (SIRECL), Sahara Housing Investment Corporation Ltd (SHICL) and other group entities. "These funds were managed in an unregulated manner without depositor oversight and maturity proceeds were not repaid instead reinvested under coercion or misrepresentation, and books were manipulated to camouflage such non-repayments. "Despite financial incapacity, the group continued to collect fresh deposits, part of which was siphoned off for benami assets and personal expenses. Assets of the group were also sold for partial cash payments, further denying rightful claims of depositors," the ED said. Earlier this year, the ED attached 707 acres of land worth Rs 1,460 crore in the Aamby Valley in Maharashtra and 1,023 acres of land worth Rs 1,538 crore in Sahara Prime City Ltd.

ED attaches assets worth over ₹762 crore in PACL case
NEW DELHI: Assets worth more than Rs 762 crore of PACL (the Pearls Group ) and its promoters have been attached under the anti-money laundering law in a case linked to an alleged Rs 48,000 crore Ponzi scheme, in which numerous investors were duped, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said on Saturday. A provisional order has been issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to attach the 68 immovable properties located across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Maharashtra, and in Australia, the central probe agency said in a statement. The money-laundering probe of 2015 stems from a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) FIR against Pearl Agrotech Corporation Limited (PACL), PGF Limited, its main promoter, late Nirmal Singh Bhangoo, and others for operating "fraudulent" investment schemes to deceive investors. Through these schemes, PACL and its directors "defrauded" the investors of about Rs 48,000 crore, the ED said. "The funds fraudulently collected from lakhs of gullible investors were systematically diverted and layered through multiple transactions to conceal their illicit origin," the agency added. The attached assets are in the name of Bhangoo, his family members and entities related to PACL, it said. The total value of these properties is Rs 762.47 crore, the ED said. Bhangoo died in August last year.

Pak phone numbers, threats to release morphed nudes — cybercriminal uses loan app to dupe users
Repeated harassing calls from Pakistani numbers, threats to circulate morphed nude images to contacts were among the coercive tactics used by a cybercriminal targeting hundreds of individuals who had taken small loans through various mobile applications. The accused was identified as Isaki Rajan Thevar (29), a Mumbai resident, hailing from Tamil Nadu. He was arrested by the Pimpri Chinchwad Cyber Crime Police and was found to have links to international operatives based in Singapore and China. An FIR in the case was registered at Cyber Crime police station of Pimpri Chinchwad police based on a complaint by a resident of Mahalunge. The complainant had received a message from an unidentified number offering a personal loan. Because the complainant needed money, he took a loan of Rs 5,000. According to the complainant, in the following days, he received dozens of calls from unidentified numbers with Pakistan country code +92, demanding the loan to be paid back with interest. The caller threatened the man and coerced him into transferring Rs 9,000 as part of the loan repayment and continued to demand more money. The caller later asked the complainant to pay Rs 15,000 more and threatened to release his morphed nude images to the people in his contact list. Probe has revealed that through the loan app that the complainant was tricked into downloading, the accused gained access to his contacts and photos while seeking initial permission at the time of installation of the app. When the complainant refused to pay Rs 15,000, morphed nude photos of the victim were sent to people in his contact list. He then approached the cyber crime cell. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shivaji Pawar had formed an investigation team comprising Inspector Ravikiran Nale, Assistant Inspector Praveen Swami and Sub Inspectors Sagar Poman and Prakash Katkade. The team started looking into the application that the complainant was made to download on his phone. The team found out that the application had been developed and operated by some suspects in Mumbai. The team soon got a location of the suspect. Earlier this week, the police arrested Isaki Rajan Thevar, who was living at Vashi near Mumbai. A sweep of electronic objects has revealed that he had been operating at least seven fraudulent loan applications. 'These applications used to get access to photos and contacts of the user at the time of downloading. This information was later misused to extort money from the victims manyfolds more than the initial small loan amount,' said DCP Shivaji Pawar. 'Investigations have revealed the arrested suspect was in contact with handlers from Singapore and China and was creating and operating these fake loan apps at the behest of these international handlers,' DCP Pawar said.
