Court allows khichdi scam accused to travel to Delhi for representing Sena UBT
A special court in Mumbai permitted Suraj Chavan, a close aide of Sena UBT leader Aaditya Thackeray and an accused in the khichdi scam, to travel to Delhi for 'discharging important official and legal duties' in connection with the functioning of the party. The court allowed Chavan to travel to Delhi for 20 days this month, after furnishing an itinerary to the investigation officer of the Enforcement Directorate, which had arrested him in January 2024. Chavan was granted bail in February this year by the Bombay High Court. 'The applicant (Chavan) wanted to travel to Delhi for discharging important official and legal duties in connection with the functioning of Shiv Sena (UBT) and to represent the party before the Election Commission of India and to consult Senior Legal Counsels in relation to the pending proceeding before the Hon'ble Supreme Court concerning intra-party disputes and to attend the party meeting with the elected Members of Parliament belonging to Shiv Sena (UBT) at New Delhi. He is ready to obey the orders of the Court,' the court said, referring to Chavan's plea. His lawyers also had submitted that the right to travel is an aspect of fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution, and that there is nothing to show that he had previously misused the liberty granted to him. 'Considering the nature of application and purpose of travel, coupled with the fact that it will take time for trial to commence, the applicant is entitled to travel on certain conditions,' the court said in the order passed last week. He was directed to pay a deposit of Rs 1 lakh as security and to inform the ED on his return. Chavan was arrested by the ED alleging irregularities in work orders issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to supply khichdi to migrant workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Congress MP raises doubts over Op Mahadev, asks if terrorists killed were ‘real' Pahalgam attackers
The Rajya Sabha MP was speaking on the issue of deploying Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel inside the parliament, including on marshalling duties, which the Congress party has objected to. 'They can't catch the actual aatankwadi (terrorists). They don't know how to do it. It took them so long to catch them. New Delhi: A week after Home Minister Amit Shah said the three terrorists who carried out the Pahalgam attack had been killed in an encounter, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Renuka Chowdhury raised doubts whether those eliminated in Operation Mahadev were the 'real' perpetrators of the 22 April massacre. 'They can use power on us, police on us, and marshal power on us and think that we will be scared,' Chowdhury said. Giving details around the process of identification of the terrorists who carried out the Pahalgam attack, the Union home minister told parliament 29 July that a joint team comprising troops from the Indian Army, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police killed three terrorists belonging to Lashkar-e-Taiba on the upper reaches of Srinagar. He identified the trio as Suleiman, a 'grade A category' commander of the LeT, Afghan and Jibran, also grade A category terrorists. He asserted that Indian agencies had ample proof and evidence that they were the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack. He had said that ballistic reports of the two AK-47s and one M-4 rifle by the Chandigarh Forensic Laboratory matched with cartridges recovered from the scene of crime in Pahalgam, confirming the use of the very rifles behind the ghastly attack. Operation Mahadev was a joint operation by the Army, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police launched in Kashmir's Dachigam on 28 July. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had questioned the timing of the operation, pointing out its coincidence with the Parliament session. Congress leader Chowdhury takes the debate a step further by casting doubt on the identity of the terrorists and the authenticity of the encounter. Speaking after Shah's detailed speech in the lower house on 29 July, Yadav pointed out the encounter killing of the terrorists happened 28 July, when the parliament was set to discuss the Pahalgam attack and subsequent Operation Sindoor launched by the armed forces. 'We are all happy … terrorists killed, and we support it. But who is reaping the political gain after all? They are asking why I am not thanking them for Operation Mahadev? When it came to giving support, all the political parties of the country were with you…why did the encounter happen only yesterday?' Vivek Agnihotri Slams FIRs Against The Bengal Files: 'You Cannot Suppress Truth'
Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri faces legal action from West Bengal's Trinamool Congress over his film The Bengal Files. With just a month left for the release of The Bengal Files, filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri has responded strongly to the legal action initiated against the film by members of West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress. The director has accused the state government of attempting to suppress his work, while vowing to move forward with his promotional plans undeterred. In a video message shared from the United States, where he is currently promoting the film, Agnihotri revealed that several First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed against him and his team across multiple locations. Despite a stay granted by the Calcutta High Court, he said that additional FIRs continue to be registered. 'I am in USA promoting The Bengal Files. I must tell you, it's one of the most defining, one of the most important films on Hindu genocide. It uncovers so many dark chapters of our history which some vested interests had covered up for a very long time. But while I am here, the ruling party of West Bengal and their members have been filing so many FIRs against us in different cities, in different thanas," Agnihotri stated. He explained that while he had initially chosen to remain silent and pursue legal remedies, the repeated legal challenges appear to be an attempt to derail the film's publicity campaign. 'I was quiet. I did not share this information with anyone because we were taking the legal course. I have great faith in Indian judiciary, especially Calcutta High Court and I have a good news to give you. That Calcutta High Court has given a stay on all these FIRs. But as the case was being heard in the High Court, at the same time, they filed more FIRs. I think this is their strategy. The ruling party wants to trap us with so many legal hassles, so many legal battles, so that we cannot focus on the promotion of the film," he added. Taking aim at the motives behind the FIRs, Agnihotri questioned whether the actions were intended to stifle dissent or hide inconvenient truths. 'This strategy has been deployed by them for a very, very long time. But you have to ask few questions. Why do they want to suppress our voice? Why they don't want this dark chapter of Indian history, of the past, and of the present of Murshidabad to come out in public domain? Are they against me? Are they against the film? Or are they against the truth?" he asked. The director also spoke about the difficulties faced during the production of the film, revealing that they were denied permission to shoot in Bengal and had to shift production to Mumbai. 'I have finished the film. It has taken a lot from us. We have put in whatever we had to make this very, very difficult film. We were not allowed to shoot in Bengal. We had to shoot the entire film in Bombay. Now, with our limited resources, we want this film to reach every citizen of India, especially the young people," he explained. He further speculated that the government's actions may be motivated by fear of the film's influence on young viewers. 'No wonder that all the Gen Z and the young people are flocking the theatres and they are discovering this hidden truth of Bengal. Is it what they are scared of? Is it why they want to suppress our voice so that the younger generation doesn't get to know about our history and do not get warned about the time to come, the future of Bengal? And I must tell you why they are attacking us, why they want to suppress our voice. Because they think they can demoralise us," said Agnihotri.
