Pink toilets to be installed in market areas of Lutyens' Delhi

Time of India25-06-2025
New Delhi: At least 37 markets in Lutyens' Delhi will get pink toilets, said New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) members on Wednesday, adding that there was a long-standing demand from visitors.
At present, six pink toilets — constructed by the civic body — are there on LIC Parliament Street, Super Bazaar Outer Circle, Dharamshala near Safdarjung Hospital, Factory Road near Safdarjung Hospital, B Avenue Sarojini Nagar and B Block in CP.
NDMC member Sarita Tomar said that the pink toilets will be facilities with separate staff and maintenance systems. "These facilities will have a woman sanitation worker and a women security guard to ensure safety, hygiene and dignity.
The pink toilets would have sanitary napkin vending machines, baby care spaces and clean drinking water. These would be in addition to the provision of women's toilets usually made at other public places," she said.

When questioned about the poor upkeep of public toilets, members said that action will be taken on complaints and efforts were being made to engage an agency that will focus on the regular cleaning of the toilets.
The project for the construction of pink toilets would be taken up in addition to 79 toilets under construction for transgender individuals in Lutyens' Delhi.
A plan for the holistic development of Sewa Basti and the upgrade of civic services at religious places will also be prepared and presented before the council soon.
It was decided that a committee will be formed under section 3 of NDMC Act for surveying major temples and coordinating with stakeholders for enhancing lighting, pathways and overall aesthetics at these places.
Delhi govt minister and ex-officio member Pravesh Verma emphasised the requirement for comprehensive civic maintenance at religious sites. "A committee for temple beautification and development will be formed to check the availability of adequate water supply, ensuring timely civil repairs, regular cleaning, horticulture maintenance, lighting, and security of devotees. The committee will survey major temples in the NDMC region and coordinate with stakeholders to implement work without disrupting religious activities," Verma said.
NDMC has recently done a revamp at the Hamunan Mandir in Connaught Place.
He also stressed on strengthening basic services in JJ clusters (Seva Bastis) that focus on sanitation, garbage collection, water availability, street lighting and footpath repair, and integrating them into the mainstream development plans.
"The council earlier worked on a project to provide water to each jhuggi cluster under the Har Ghar Jal scheme, and now we are going a step ahead to improve the condition of these places in terms of sanitation services," said NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Chahal.

CM to celebrate b'day quietly in ancestral village

New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta will keep her birthday on Saturday, July 19, a "low-key affair" and celebrate it at her ancestral village Nandgarh, in Haryana's Julana district. Officials said the chief minister will leave for her village early on Saturday and attend a few programmes there before spending some time with differently abled children. According to the official programme shared by CM's office, apart from spending time with her family, Gupta will attend a public meeting in Nandgarh village and lay the foundation stone of various projects in Julana. Sources said Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini is also likely to call on Gupta in her village. A Delhi BJP spokesperson said the chief minister will also plant a tree in the name of her mother under the party's ongoing programme 'Ek Ped Maa ke Naam'. The party spokesperson said CM may make a new beginning. "She considers exchanging flower bouquets as an unfruitful splashing, which needs to be curbed. That's why she has decided to keep her birthday as a personal affair and avoid the queuing up of people to meet and wish her by offering flower bouquets," said the BJP spokesperson. Swachh Survekshan Awards: MCD jumps 59 places, NDMC bags ‘Super Swachh League City Award'

In the latest edition of the Swachh Survekshan Awards, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) took significant leaps compared to last year, as both municipal bodies set their sights on bigger goals. The MCD secured the 31st position in the 'Medium Cities' category in the ninth edition of the world's largest urban sanitation – it jumped 59 places in the survey compared to last year's ranking (90). However, MCD Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh said efforts are being made to bag the first position next year, as he blamed the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. 'We're not very happy since our Standing Committee could not be formed due to the AAP… as a result, the Capital was not cleared properly,' he said. The municipal corporation, one of the world's largest, has called for better firms to be hired to make the city clean. Meanwhile, the NDMC bagged the 'Super Swachh League City Award' at the event held at Vigyan Bhawan on Thursday. The award, presented by President Droupadi Murmu and Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, was jointly received by Delhi Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, NDMC Chairman Keshav Chandra, and NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal, an official statement said. The municipal council was recognised under the category of cities with a population between 50,000 and 3 lakh for its exemplary work in urban sanitation, waste management, and green initiatives, as per the NDMC statement. 'This achievement has been made possible with the tireless dedication of Swachhta Sevaks, Sanitation and Horticulture teams, Engineers Wings, PMU experts, planners, and the active participation of citizens,' the statement read. 'This award is a testament to NDMC's continued efforts to set benchmarks in cleanliness, service standards, and civic excellence. I congratulate our employees, especially our Safai Sevaks, whose relentless hard work has earned us this national recognition. Let us continue to strive for a cleaner, greener, and healthier New Delhi,' said Chahal. In 2020, the NDMC was declared the 'Cleanest Capital City' among all states and union territories that were surveyed. 'This time, we focused on the creation of RRR centres (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and waste segregation at the source. We ran campaigns for e-waste and construction and demolition waste,' an NDMC official said, adding that 28,000 students and 4,000 teachers of the corporation's schools were also involved in raising awareness to keep the environment clean. 'Community participation was a key factor.' An annual exercise since 2016, the Swachh Survekshan is conducted by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban. This year's edition saw participation from 4,589 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), a significant increase of 73 cities from the time when the survey was first launched. The survey, for the first time this year, introduced a classification of cities into five population categories – Very Small Cities (less than 20,000), Small Cities (20,000-50,000), Medium Cities (50,000-3 lakh), Big Cities (3-10 lakh) and Million-Plus Cities (more than 10 lakh). The theme was 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,' and emphasised waste management and sustainable sanitation practices. According to the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, 14 crore people participated in the survey through face-to-face interactions, the Swachhata and MyGov apps, and various social media platforms across more than 4,500 cities.
