Kolkata Gangrape Case: Accused's Video Demanding Justice After RG Kar Horror Goes Viral
Monojit Mishra, one of the accused in the gangrape of a law student in Kolkata, previously demanded justice for the RG Kar rape-murder case victim.
As probe continues into the gangrape of a 24-year-old law student in Kolkata, an old Facebook video of one of the accused, Monojit Mishra, has surfaced wherein he was seen demanding justice for the horrific RG Kar rape-murder case victim.
In August last year, shortly after RG Kar horror unfolded, Monojit Mishra shared a video of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee spearheading a protest. He captioned the video, demanding the death penalty for the rapist and swift justice. 'We demand noose for the rapist, we demand justice, not drama, we demand justice without delay, we demand noose for the guilty," read the caption.
Now, less than a year later, Monojit himself stands accused in the shocking rape case at a Kolkata law college.
Monojit, a former leader of the Trinamool unit on college campus who worked as a contractual staff, once claimed close ties with the party's top leaders. However, the Trinamool has since distanced itself from him.
An alumnus of the law college, Monojit's August video featured CM Banerjee's march seeking justice for the RG Kar Hospital victim, whose case had sparked outrage across the country, prompting a CBI investigation into the case. The accused in that case, Sanjay Roy, was sentenced to life imprisonment in January this year.
The new rape case involving Monojit has once again put the Trinamool government in a difficult position, with the Opposition questioning the state's law and order. While the ruling party highlights swift action by police, Opposition argues that Monojit operated with impunity due to his political connections.
Monojit and his co-accused, Pramit Mukhopadhyay and Jaib Ahmed, have been expelled from the college and are in police custody. The trio will be produced in a court today.
According to media reports, Monojit has a history of offenses, including stripping a woman student at South Calcutta Law College in July 2019, carrying out a robbery at a friend's home in December 2019, molesting a woman in Swinhoe Lane in March 2022, assaulting a man in April 2017, and beating a college guard and damaging property in May last year. Monojit was granted bail in all these cases.

Kolkata law student gang-rape: Accused revived girl with inhaler to prolong torture, say cops; were desperate to keep her conscious
KOLKATA: The rapists of the law student showed intense inhumanity by buying an inhaler, not to alleviate her suffering but to prolong the torture, showing both "intent and desperation", Kolkata Police told Alipore court on Tuesday. "They were very desperate. When the girl became breathless (she had a panic attack when the accused tried to confine and pin her down) she was provided the inhaler, not to revive her but to ensure that she regained her senses so they could assault her sexually," public prosecutor Sourin Ghosal claimed. Seeking further police custody of the accused, the public prosecutor claimed the accused were "very influential and may influence the investigation". The police also informed the court that not only did the medical report of the survivor corroborate her statement, technical evidence collected by them as well as circumstantial evidence matched her version of events. "We have told the court that CCTV footage from the chemist's shop from where the inhaler was purchased, mobile locations of the accused, statements of the guard and witnesses match," said an officer. Accused's defence: Consensual act Cops said they had already questioned six of the 17 students present at the college on the evening of June 25 and the college vice-principal, who allegedly received a phone call from prime accused Monojit Mishra the day after the incident. Monojit and his aides Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee did not pray for bail but claimed they were cooperating with the investigations. Monojit insisted there was no sexual assault and the act was consensual. The defence counsel hinted at a conspiracy and asked the court to direct police to examine the call details of the survivor. The counsel for security guard Pinaki Banerjee argued that the latter's authority was limited and requested the court to examine his role and issue an appropriate order. The court sent Monojit, Zaib and Pramit to police custody till July 8 and Pinaki till July 4. Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma said they would do everything possible to ensure a quick custodial trial. "The incident is very sensitive. Investigation is ongoing and we have already gathered multiple pieces of information and evidence which are being verified. Necessary actions are being taken. If proven guilty, strict punishment would be sought for the accused," he said. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Doctor's Day 2025 , messages and quotes!
