Italian Design Day 2025 inaugurated at University of Jordan
Italian Design Day features a broad programme of promotional events worldwide, organised by the network of embassies, consulates, ITA offices abroad, and Italian cultural institutes, according to a statement from the Italian embassy.
Every year, for this occasion, over 100 ambassadors of Italian design and creativity share their expertise and vision.
Since its first edition, Italian Design Day has established itself as an "effective" tool for promoting design and supporting the internationalisation of a "strategic" industrial sector for Italian exports.
The event in Amman, moderated by Head of the ITA Office in Amman Elisa Salazar, opened with welcoming remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Design Ali Abu Ghanimeh, Italian Ambassador to Jordan Luciano Pezzotti and UJ Vice Rector Nahed Emaish.
The opening was followed by a keynote speech from architect Alessandro Colombo, professor at the Polytechnic University of Milan, Turin, and NABA, on this year's theme: "Inequalities - Design for a Better Life."
The lecture was followed by presentations from two professors at the University of Jordan.
Head of the Department of the Faculty of Architecture Deyala Altarawneh delivered a talk entitled "Mass Customisation in Affordable Housing: A Design Solution for Social Equity."
Head of the Department of European Languages and an expert on Italy and the Italian language Mahmoud Jaran presented "Design and Literature: An Inclusive Synergy against Inequalities."
At the end of the seminar, at the Gallery of the Faculty of Arts and Design, Colombo, in the presence of Pezzotti and Emaish, inaugurated the exhibition "Photography for Lifetime Achievement: Italian Photography's Homage to the Masters of the Compassod'Oro."
The exhibition, in its full version, presents around 150 images dedicated to designers, institutions, and companies awarded the Compassod'Oro for Career Achievement from 1955 to the present.
Curated by ADI (the Association for Industrial Design), the exhibition pays tribute to the relationship between photography and design, highlighting photography not only as a documentary tool but also as a "creative" medium that has contributed to the spread and success of Italian design.
Established in 1954, the ADI Compassod'Oro Award is the oldest and "most prestigious" design award in the world.
This year, Italian Design Day also benefits from its synergy with the upcoming International Exhibition of the Triennale di Milano, which will take place from May to November 2025, titled "Inequalities: How to Mend the Fractures of Humanity."
Italian Design Day 2025 also serves as a moment for reflection in anticipation of the 63rd edition of the Salone del Mobile Milano, which is scheduled to be held from April 8 to 13, at Rho Fiera Milano.
The exhibition "Photography for Career: A Tribute of Italian Photography to the Masters of the Compassod'Oro" will remain open at the UJ until March 9 from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

Russian Language Day held to promote cooperation, cultural exchange

The event aimed to boost bilateral cultural friendship and exchange and provide an opportunity for UJ's students and the local community to gain a "closer" understanding of Russian heritage and traditions, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Dean of the School Marwan Jarrah, in the presence of the Russian Deputy Ambassador to the Kingdom Kseniya Kerpichenko, noted the importance of cultural exchange and the role of language as "a bridge of communication." Jarrah also underlined the school's continued endeavour to build channels of "constructive" cooperation, adding that the UJ is "proud" of the academic programme to teach the Russian language and is "constantly" striving to enhance cooperation with prestigious Russian universities. Meanwhile, Director of the Russian Cultural Centre in Amman Alexey Bukin said that it annually offers 175 scholarships to Jordanian students to pursue their studies in various disciplines at Russian universities, which contributes to enhancing mutual academic and popular ties. The Cultural Day programme featured diverse shows that reflected "richness" of Russian culture and a screening of a short film about Russia, as well as other folkloric and literary activities. Page 2

Who is Robert Prevost, the new Pope Leo XIV?
Ammon News - Even before his name was announced from the balcony of St Peter's Basilica, the crowds below were chanting "Viva il Papa" - Long live the Pope. Robert Francis Prevost, 69, has become the 267th occupant of the throne of St Peter and he will be known as Leo XIV. He is the first American to fill the role of pope, although he is considered as much a cardinal from Latin America because of the many years he spent as a missionary in Peru. Born in Chicago in 1955 to parents of Spanish and Franco-Italian descent, Leo served as an altar boy and was ordained in 1982. Although he moved to Peru three years later, he returned regularly to the US to serve as a priest and a prior in his home city. He has Peruvian nationality and is fondly remembered as a figure who worked with marginalised communities and helped build bridges. He spent 10 years as a local parish pastor and as a teacher at a seminary in Trujillo in north-western Peru. In his first words as Pope, Leo spoke fondly of his predecessor Francis. "We still hear in our ears the weak but always courageous voice of Pope Francis who blessed us," he said. "United and hand-in-hand with God, let us advance together," he told cheering crowds. The Pope also spoke of his role in the Augustinian Order. In 2014, Francis made him Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru. He is well known to cardinals because of his high-profile role as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops in Latin America which has the important task of selecting and supervising bishops. He became archbishop in January 2023 and within a few months, Francis made him a cardinal. BBC

Who is Pope Leo XIV, first American pontiff?
Robert Francis Prevost, the first pope from the United States, has a history of missionary work in Peru but also a keen grasp of the inner workings of the Church. The new Leo XIV, a Chicago native, was entrusted by his predecessor Francis to head the powerful Dicastery for Bishops, charged with advising the pontiff on new bishop appointments. The sign of confidence from Francis speaks to Prevost's commitment as a missionary in Peru to the "peripheries" – overlooked areas far from Rome prioritised by Francis -- and his reputation as a bridge-builder and moderate within the Curia. The 69-year-old Archbishop-Bishop emeritus of Chiclayo, Peru, was made a cardinal by Francis in 2023 after being named prefect of the dicastery, one of the Vatican's most important departments -- and a post that introduced him to all key players in the Church. Vatican watchers had given Prevost the highest chances among the group of US cardinals of being pope, given his pastoral bent, global view and ability to navigate the central bureaucracy. Italian newspaper La Repubblica called him "the least American of the Americans" for his soft-spoken touch. His strong grounding in canon law has also been seen as reassuring to more conservative cardinals seeking a greater focus on theology. 'Can't turn back' Following Francis's death, Prevost said there was "still so much to do" in the work of the Church. "We can't stop, we can't turn back. We have to see how the Holy Spirit wants the Church to be today and tomorrow, because today's world, in which the Church lives, is not the same as the world of ten or 20 years ago," he told Vatican News last month. "The message is always the same: proclaim Jesus Christ, proclaim the Gospel, but the way to reach today's people, young people, the poor, politicians, is different," he said. Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Prevost attended a minor seminary of the Order of St Augustine in St Louis as a novice before graduating from Philadelphia's Villanova University, an Augustinian institution, with a degree in mathematics. After receiving a masters degree in divinity from Chicago's Catholic Theological Union in 1982, and a doctorate decree in canon law in Rome, the polyglot joined the Augustinians in Peru in 1985 for the first of his decade-long missions in that country. Returning to Chicago in 1999, he was made provincial prior of the Augustinians in the US Midwest and later the prior general of the order throughout the world. But he returned to Peru in 2014 when Francis appointed him as apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo in the country's north. Nearly a decade later, Prevost's appointment in 2023 as head of the dicastery came after Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet was accused of sexually assaulting a woman and resigned for age reasons. The Vatican later dropped the case against Ouellet for insufficient evidence.
