Maharashtra To Train 1 Lakh Youths Yearly Through Home-District Apprenticeship
Officials say the decision will not only reduce the burden of relocation but also strengthen the connection between local talent and industries
In a major boost for skill development and employment, Maharashtra's Skill, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha has directed that students from Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) be provided apprenticeship opportunities within their home districts. This move is expected to help thousands of students gain hands-on experience while staying close to their families.
Officials say the decision will not only reduce the burden of relocation but also strengthen the connection between local talent and industries. Students will now be able to work and earn a stipend through apprenticeship programmes in industries operating in their own regions.
Under the Maharashtra Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme, the state aims to train around one lakh candidates every year. Industries with 30 or more employees (including contractual staff) are now required to offer apprenticeship positions equal to 2.5% to 25% of their total workforce.
Currently, the scheme covers 258 designated trades in 27 sectors and 414 optional trades in 35 sectors. In addition, 123 professions under the Maharashtra State Skill Development Examination Board and 20 others in six sectors have also been included. Depending on the trade, apprenticeship duration can range from 6 to 36 months. Both freshers and previously trained candidates will benefit from this initiative.
To ensure quality training, government, semi-government, and private institutions are being encouraged to increase apprenticeship intakes. The curriculum of ITIs is also being reviewed regularly so more trades can be brought under this scheme. As per government norms, institutions offering basic training will receive the necessary reimbursements. Students have already welcomed the move. Many ITI students across the state have expressed satisfaction at getting a chance to learn and work without leaving their hometowns.
Lodha is also actively working to restore apprentice recruitment in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Earlier, about 200 ITI students were appointed annually in BMC departments, but this practice had stopped in recent years. The minister has written to the BMC Commissioner to restart this initiative, and similar efforts are underway in other municipal corporations across the state.

First eligibility list for Dharavi redevelopment released
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) has released its first eligibility list, with over 75 per cent of tenement holders qualifying for new homes under the ambitious slum redevelopment scheme, according to data released by the DRP. All bona fide residents who settled in Dharavi before January 1, 2000, are eligible for a 350 sq ft flat within Dharavi. All such residents will qualify for the resettlement unless they do not provide documents. Those who settled between January 1, 2000, and January 1, 2011, may receive 300 sq ft units outside Dharavi at alternative locations. The first list identifies 505 households from Meghwadi and Ganesh Nagar in Mahim as eligible for rehabilitation. In the first list published for 505 households of Sector 6 (Meghwadi and Ganesh Nagar in Mahim), over 75 per cent of tenement holders have qualified for new homes under the redevelopment scheme, according to data released by the DRP. The balance would get qualified, based on additional checks and documents sought. Live Events Out of a total of 505 tenements, 31 tenements are yet to submit any documents, 137 cases are pending verification by BMC, which the DRP is pursuing, and the remaining 38 are amenity structures. Among the remaining 299 tenements, 229 have been found eligible for new homes under various criteria. The remaining 70 are in the process of submitting additional documents to validate their eligibility. DRP CEO SVR Srinivas assured that every resident will get a house either inside or outside Dharavi, basis their eligibility status. "I would like to reiterate that the Dharavi redevelopment is the most inclusive project ever contemplated in SRA history, where every resident is going to get a house. Not just that, all commercial units, whether eligible or ineligible, will get spaces inside Dharavi itself." He further explained that commercial units that are eligible will, in any case, get free in-situ spaces inside Dharavi. In fact, a proposal has been made to the government to accommodate ineligible commercial units as well, on a rental basis, inside Dharavi. "The 10 per cent commercial space reserved in every society can be given on a rental basis to ineligible commercial units so that they can sustain their livelihoods in Dharavi itself. We have already made this proposal." As per the Annexure-II data, 170 ground-floor tenements, including residential, commercial and residential/commercial, have all met the eligibility criteria and are entitled to new homes either within or outside Dharavi. Of these, 157 tenements came into existence before January 1, 2000, and are entitled to 350 sq ft homes within Dharavi. The remaining 13 are considered Shashulk Eligible, meaning they are entitled to 300 sq ft homes outside Dharavi at a subsidised cost of Rs 2.5 lakh, having settled in Dharavi before January 1, 2011. In a significant step, the inclusion of upper-floor tenement holders, typically disqualified under all other slum rehabilitation schemes, provides inclusivity. As per the data, 59 upper-floor tenements have qualified for new homes under the DRP's unique 'hire-purchase' scheme. These residents will receive 300 sq ft homes on rent for 12 years, after which they will become legal owners. They may also choose to buy the home outright at a government-decided rate at any time during the 12-year period. Typically, under other slum rehabilitation schemes, those who settle in the ground floor after 2011 are excluded from redevelopment benefits, and all upper-floor residents face outright eviction. However, DRP has ensured that all such residents are also provided new and modern homes outside Dharavi, but within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). These colonies will be modern and will be maintained free of cost for 10 years. The DRP has invited tenement holders to submit their suggestions or objections regarding the Draft Annexure-II. Submissions can be made to the DRP office by July 5.

Mumbai: BMC plans pedestrian subway linking metro, racecourse, and Haji Ali parking hub
MUMBAI: In a major step toward improving pedestrian access in South Mumbai, the BMC is planning a dedicated pedestrian subway. This new underground passage will connect the Acharya Atre Chowk Metro station to Mahalaxmi Racecourse and the Coastal Road's parking hub at Haji Ali. The objective is to ensure seamless movement between the metro, racecourse, and coastal amenities. The main subway will run from the Nehru Science Centre exit of the Acharya Atre Chowk Metro station to Mahalaxmi Racecourse, with a branch extending 120 meters. The main stretch of the subway will be 1 km long and 7.5 meters wide. Two design options are under consideration — one that connects the subway to the car park and another that doesn't. If connected, the subway will have a width of 18 to 25 meters at the preliminary stage. To take this forward, the MMRCL will appoint a consultant for a detailed feasibility and project report. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between BMC and MMRCL to define roles, responsibilities, and obligations. Civic labour unions meet to protest against BMC tender
MUMBAI: A meeting was organised by a joint committee of seven labour unions at the Annabhau Sathe Auditorium in Byculla on Tuesday afternoon to oppose a recent BMC tender regarding the collection and transportation of solid waste. In an unexpected move, municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani made an appearance and attempted to placate the workers. However, his efforts proved unsuccessful, with the unions announcing that they will hold a vote on July 8 to decide whether to continue the protest.
