New Toyota 4Runner's Interior Is Nicer, More Spacious Than the Old One

The 2025 is bigger inside than its , with significantly more legroom for second- and third-row passengers.
The dashboard now offers a 14.0-inch touchscreen, and all models feature at least 7.0 inches of digital gauges.
Other modern upgrades include a wireless phone charger, wireless phone mirroring, and a standard heated steering wheel on the pricier trims.
The fifth-generation Toyota 4Runner's reign lasted 14 years, and the off-road SUV's cabin was among the most glaring indications of its age by the end of its run. Thankfully, Toyota's sixth-generation model brings the 4Runner up to date for 2025 with an interior that's packed with screens and has a more stylish design. The new 4Runner also made strides in terms of legroom compared with the old version, although the newly optional hybrid powertrain dramatically cuts into the available cargo space.
The updated 4Runner's footprint is notably larger, with the wheelbase extended by over two inches; the overall length is up by over four inches. The new model is also two inches wider and a tad taller, and the grander exterior dimensions translate to a more spacious cabin in most measurements. Like the outgoing model, the new 4Runner is offered with a third row, but this option is restricted to the SR5 and Limited trims without the hybrid powertrain.
For 2025, the 4Runner gives passengers more space to stretch out. Legroom increases marginally for the front passengers but rises by nearly two full inches for second-row riders. Third-row passengers also gain a whopping 2.5 inches of legroom versus the outgoing model. Headroom, meanwhile, has increased by 0.4 inch up front, but it's down 0.8 inch in the second row. Third-row riders, however, have a full inch of extra space for their noggins.
Other metrics see less significant changes. Shoulder room remains the same for the second row and is up by 0.2 inch for the front passengers. Hip room, however, actually decreases by 1.3 inches up front for the new generation, while the second row is 0.4 inch wider. Toyota didn't quote shoulder and hip room figures for the 2025 4Runner's third row.
4Runner owners will be able to haul more stuff in their new SUVs as long as they stick to nonhybrid, two-row models. With the second row stowed, Toyota quotes 90 cubic feet of space, so slightly more than before. With the second-row seats in place, the 48 cubic feet available is about one cubic foot more than in the 2024 version.
Adding the third row cuts drastically into the overall interior space, however. With both rear rows stowed, the total cargo room drops to 84 cubic feet. With the second row up, the 45 cubes are about one cubic foot less than the old model. Still, with the third row up, the 2025 4Runner made gains, up by three cubic feet for a total of 12 cubes. Unsurprisingly, the hybrid iForce Max powertrain eats into cargo room even further, dropping it to 83 cubic feet with the second row folded and 43 cubic feet with the second row up.
Unlike the ancient fifth-generation 4Runner, the sixth generation's redesigned cabin is packed full of technology. An 8.0-inch touchscreen comes standard on the SR5, TRD Sport, and TRD Off-Road, and while this is the same size as the standard screen on the outgoing model, the new unit looks crisper and runs Toyota's new, clean, and intuitive infotainment system.
The TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter all get a new 14.0-inch display that's huge by comparison. The 4Runner variants with the bigger screen also pack a 14-speaker JBL sound system, although this is one speaker fewer than the optional system on the 2024 model.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone mirroring comes on every 2025 4Runner, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is standard on all but the base SR5 model, which packs a 7.0-inch display. The old 4Runner had a tiny 4.2-inch display, although we're sure some traditionalists will bemoan the departure of real gauges.
Just as with the 2024 model, dual-zone automatic climate control with second-row vents only comes standard on upper trims—the Limited, Platinum, Trailhunter, and, unlike last year, the TRD Pro. Single-zone automatic climate control is standard on the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Premium models.
Heated front seats come standard on the TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road, with the Premium versions of those models upgrading from fabric to Toyota's SofTex material and gaining standard ventilation. The TRD Sport previously didn't have heated seats, while ventilation was previously only found on the Limited trim. The Limited and Platinum's heated and ventilated seats feature leather upholstery, and the Platinum also features heated second-row chairs (a new addition). A heated steering wheel appears for the first time and is standard on the Premium models, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter.
Other goodies include a standard auto-dimming rearview mirror on the TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road Premium, and Limited. The 4Runner also now includes a digital rearview mirror on the Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter. A Smart Key system with remote keyless entry is standard on all 4Runners too. All trims but the SR5 feature five USB-C ports throughout the cabin as well as a wireless phone charger.

Sales Summary According to preliminary estimates, US Light Vehicle (LV) sales fell by 4.3% YoY in June, to 1.26 million units. June 2025 had two fewer selling days as compared to June 2024, meaning that sales grew by 3.6% YoY on a selling day-adjusted basis. The daily selling rate was measured at 52.6k units/day in June, down from 54.5k units/day in May. The annualized selling rate was estimated at 15.2 million units/year in June, down from 15.4 million units/year in May. Retail sales were estimated at 1.03 million units, down by 0.4 % YoY, while fleet sales were thought to total 236k units, down by 18.3% YoY. For the first half of the year, sales grew by 3.7% YoY. The annualized selling rate averaged 16.3 million units/year for the first six months overall, but slowed from 16.5 million units/year in Q1, to 16.0 million units/year in Q2. OEM Analysis In June, GM remained the bestselling OEM in the market, with total sales of 218k units and a market share of 17.3%. However, this is preliminarily GM's lowest market share since August 2024. Toyota Group once again came in second, on 193k units, for a 15.3% share, while Ford Group was third on 177k units, with a 14.0% share. Looking at the first six months of the year, the same three OEMs comprised the top three in the sales rankings, in the same order. At a brand level, Ford led sales in June, on 169k units, beating Toyota by 4k units. This was the first time since December 2024 that Ford has outsold Toyota. Chevrolet was a distant third, on 139k units. Model Analysis The Ford F-150 topped the sales rankings in June, on 43.3k units. This result meant that the F-150 was the bestselling model in the market in each month of Q2. Moreover, the gap to the next highest-selling model, the Toyota RAV4, was 6.5k units in June, and the F-150 had not previously had such an advantage over the RAV4 in exactly two years. The Chevrolet Silverado finished June in third place, for a second straight month. Looking at H1 2025 as a whole, the F-150 also beat the RAV4, with total sales of around 246k units, 6k ahead of the RAV4. The Honda CR-V was in third place, on 213k units. For comparison, in H1 2024 the RAV4 outsold the F-150 by around 31k units. Segment Analysis According to initial estimates, Compact Non-Premium SUV's market share was 21.1% in June, up by 0.1 pp from May's result. Midsize Non-Premium SUV was once again the second bestselling segment in June, with a market share of 15.2%, but this was the lowest share for the segment since March. Large Pickup had a strong month, and its market share of 14.7% was the second highest ever for the month of June, behind only June 2020 – which was somewhat exceptional due to unique conditions in the early stages of the pandemic. Despite a slight softening in share in recent months, Compact Non-Premium's market share for H1 2025 was 21.7%, up by 0.3 pp YoY. Midsize Non-Premium SUV lost 0.5 pp YoY in H1, to 15.1%, while Large Pickups gained 0.5 pp YoY, to 13.5%. David Oakley, Manager, Americas Sales Forecasts, GlobalData, said: 'Despite a generally gloomy mood enveloping the automotive industry, June sales were not as poor as might have been expected under the circumstances. There were a number of factors complicating the analysis of the month's sales. Firstly, two fewer selling days in June 2025 than in June 2024 made the YoY comparison somewhat challenging. Counteracting this effect, however, June 2025 was flattered by the fact that the CDK cyberattack impacted sales activity in June 2024. Overlaying all of this is an atmosphere in which regular efforts to boost volumes at the end of Q2 were muted, as tariffs cause OEMs to rein in incentive spending. In addition, some brands noted that inventory was becoming tight on certain models. Taking a step back, H1 2025 saw around 8.14 million units sold, the strongest first half to the year since 2021. However, with the pull-forward effect ahead of tariff implementation now over, we continue to forecast a significantly slower H2. Although the selling rate remained above 15 million units/year in June, the month was largely in line with the expected downward trend as we head into the second half of the year. An additional curve ball will be the phasing out of tax rebates for EV purchases, which could lead to an initial surge in EV sales during H2 2025, before a dramatic slump once the rebates are no longer available'. Forecast Updates We still expect 2025 sales to come in at around 15.2 million units, down from almost 16.0 million units in 2024, and representing a YoY decline of around 5%. In Q3 and Q4, we expect remaining pre-tariff inventory to dry up and be replaced by vehicles that were subject to import taxes, either on the finished vehicle itself, or on component parts. While OEMs are certainly trying hard to avoid hiking MSRPs, there is a limit to how long automakers can absorb higher costs, and there could be larger-than-normal uplifts on pricing as we see more 2026 model year vehicles enter the market. Currently, there are no indications of an imminent breakthrough in trade negotiations with key partners, and we do not expect any change to the status quo until next year. Still, our forecast also assumes a wider economic slowdown, and so a more robust performance could keep vehicle sales flowing more freely in H2, and creates some upside risk to our outlook. 6 Reasons Why Mazda Won't Like Nissan's New Electric Sedan in China

Nissan launched its $17,000 N7 electric sedan in China on April 28, and the model has already received over 20,000 orders. In May, Nissan delivered 3,034 N7s in China, while the Mazda EZ-6, a competing electric sedan starting at $19,600, sold 1,821 units. Nissan confirmed that the N7 will expand to global markets, but hasn't yet specified which countries. While the N7 and the EZ-6 didn't sell as many units in May as models like Toyota's new bZ3X electric SUV, the two vehicles are helping deliver the value that Chinese consumers are looking for in an electric sedan, and Nissan has Mazda beat beyond price. Both models are comparable in size, with the N7 measuring 194 inches in length and 74.6 inches in width, and the EZ-6 measuring 193.7 inches in length and 74.6 inches in width. The N7 offers two motor options with 215 and 268 horsepower, respectively, while the EZ-6's electric powertrain delivers 258 horsepower. An EZ-6 gets you from 0-62 MPH in 6.2 seconds, and the 268-horsepower N7 isn't far behind at 6.9 seconds. While Mazda offers an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) EZ-6 that's fundamentally an electric car, this version also features a 1.5-liter gas engine used as a battery recharging generator, so we'll focus on the EV version. Regarding range, the N7's two lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery options-58 kWh and 73 kWh-yield 335 miles and 388 miles of range, respectively. Mazda's fully electric EZ-6 offers a 373-mile range. You'll pay $19,200 to $20,800 for a 73 kWh N7 in China, placing it neck and neck with the EZ-6 in terms of pricing. Those prioritizing charging speed will favor the N7, which charges from 10% to 80% in 19 minutes, three minutes faster than the EZ-6. Inside, Nissan's N7 contains a 15.6-inch center console display, while the EX-6 features a 14.6-inch infotainment screen. You'll also get more trunk space within an N7 at 17.8 cu ft compared to this Mazda's 12.3 cu ft. The EX-6 offers a bit more curb appeal than the N7 with a sportier look, but the N7's exterior seems to mirror the modern, minimalist EV design sentiment that consumers are after from brands like Tesla. While Nissan hasn't yet confirmed which markets the N7 will first expand to, Japan and Australia are rumored to be frontrunners, according to Carscoops. Other possibilities include Malaysia and limited European markets. In 45 days, Nissan has moved 10,000 N7 units, indicating promising growth from May's 3,034 deliveries. Nissan has historically experienced struggles in the Chinese and American EV markets, so the N7's early momentum is a bigger win for the automaker than it may seem. Drivers in the U.S. can also look forward to Nissan's redesigned Leaf SUV that's debuting in the fall. The 2026 Leaf is expected to cost more than the N7, with an unconfirmed starting price in the mid-$30,000s, but it remains more accessible than many electric SUVs in its class. The American auto industry is once again in a trap of its own making. For decades European and Asian automakers have been pushing the Big Three deeper into a spiral of producing larger, more profitable, lower-quality vehicles. Each time an American automaker has faced adversity and evolving consumer desires, they have failed to adapt to the change and instead pushed headstrong into the status quo, begging for government aid in the form of protectionist economic policies or massive financial bailouts. With Toyota's venerable RAV4 taking the best-selling-vehicle-in-America honors for 2024 from Ford's F-series pickup, it certainly feels like the beginning of the end. Once Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler were behemoths on the international stage, but now can't even conquer the U.S. market. The first step in this long road to the bottom was the 1973 fuel crisis, for which the Big Three were ill prepared and got stomped on by Japanese various international financial collapses of the 1990s and 2000s the American automakers continued to push larger and more expensive products to market, in spite of declining build quality and comparative reliability. The Big Three are responsible for some of the most recalled cars on the market, and simply can't match the Japanese, Korean, or German brands on quality rankings, according to Consumer Reports. Looking at sales data, and the renewed head-in-the-sand approach to electrification, there isn't much about the American auto industry to be impressed by these days. The absolute nadir of the 2000s financial crisis saw automobile production in this country dip to a then-unfathomable 107,500 vehicles in January of 2009. Current automobile production rates within the United States have dipped lower than that in three of the last seven months, according to Federal Reserve Economic Data. While the Trump administration has favored protectionist economic policies aimed at moving vehicle production back to the U.S. the long-term outlook doesn't seem positive. With that protection comes walking back on globally focused electric vehicle incentives and subsidies, which the Big Three desperately needs to compete anywhere else in the world. I know I've said it a million times before, but if Detroit doesn't step up its game in the near future, China is going to bully them and eat their lunch. The U.S. auto industry is building fewer cars than ever, larger than ever, more expensively than ever, and reversing course on electrification? That all spells a recipe for disaster. If you ever needed an idea of what the U.S. auto industry could look like in the next decade or two, simply look at the British auto industry. Thanks to a failure to adapt to a changing global market and increased competition, while thumbing their collective noses at modernization, a once booming industry, packed with competition, collapsed almost overnight. It's difficult to watch this retrospective from quarter-century-ago from Jeremy Clarkson (above) and not instantly see the parallels. The current state of the UK auto industry is one that sees only the high-end automakers survive, sold off to foreign interests, while the brands catering to the everyman rot on the vine. Ultra-lux Bentley, Land Rover, and Rolls-Royce still exist, likewise the sportiest cars from McLaren, Jaguar, Aston Martin, and Lotus still wave the Union Jack, but not a single one of them remains under British ownership. MG and Mini, the last remnants of a Brit car for the people, are also foreign-owned. Will the Americans suffer the same fate? There isn't exactly an American analogue to any of these British brands, so will the Dodges, Fords and Chevrolets fade into ignominy like so many other Austins, Morrises, Rovers, Triumphs, or Rileys before them?
