‘The Bad Guys 2' movie review: Eye-popping action and spectacular camera work drive the sequel

From their heist in Cairo five years ago when Ms Tarantula (Awkwafina) was a newbie, to their latest attempts to walk the straight and narrow, the Bad Guys are immensely entertaining. The Bad Guys 2 (English) Directors: Pierre Perifel, JP Sans Voice cast: Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Awkwafina, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, Zazie Beetz, Danielle Brooks, Natasha Lyonne, Maria Bakalova, Alex Borstein, Richard Ayoade, Lilly Singh Runtime: 104 minutes Storyline: Just as the Bad Guys are trying to be good, they run into the Bad Girls and their cunning plans After putting away the evil genius guinea pig Professor Marmalade (Richard Ayoade) and serving time, the Bad Guys are looking for jobs. Wolf (Sam Rockwell), the leader, pickpocket, and getaway driver; Snake (Marc Maron), the safecracker and Wolf's second-in-command; Shark (Craig Robinson), the master of disguise; Piranha (Anthony Ramos), the muscle; and Tarantula aka Webs (Awkwafina), the hacker, are all trying to go straight. They do not find much success. Wolf interviews at a bank he has robbed three times, as Craig (Michael Godere), the long-suffering owner, reminds him. The others have no success either as the general public are not willing to trust the erstwhile villains. While these failures seem to get the rest of the group down, Snake is on a different trip of Vinyasa and pottery. There is a new criminal in town, the Phantom Bandit, much to the disgust of Chief of Police, Misty Luggins, (Alex Borstein) who has been promoted to Police Commissioner. Suspicion for the Phantom Bandit's crimes falls on the Bad Guys, while Governor Diane Foxington (Zazie Beetz), who is 'medium' friends with Wolf, suggests the Bad Guys do something good to change public perception. After a sneaking suspicion of Snake's tripped out vibe, the Bad Guys realise the Phantom Bandit is actually a snow leopard named Kitty Kat (Danielle Brooks), leader of the Bad Girls, which is made up of a raven called Doom (Natasha Lyonne) and a wild boar named Pigtail Petrova (Maria Bakalova). There is a plot to get Macguffinite (a little Macguffin!) to attract all the gold in the world and a plan to infiltrate Mr. Moon's (Colin Jost) wedding to steal his rocket. The governor's secret might come out even as the Bad Guys strive to clear their name, with a dash of romance, hacking and good old-fashioned punch-ups. ALSO READ: 'The Bad Guys' movie review: Sam Rockwell headlines this rowdy, raucous romp The bright bursts of colour, the songs, jokes and eye-popping action ensure The Bad Guys 2 keeps us thoroughly entertained. The voice cast is brilliant, with Lyonne providing her husky charms to her 'Snaky cakes,' Awkwafina lending cyber charm, Rockwell leading smoothly, and Borstein moving us to tears with her funeral oratory. The camera work staging the action sequences deserve a mention, especially the swinging crane in Cairo in the beginning and all the outer space hi-jinks towards the end. Based on Aaron Blabey's graphic novel series, The Bad Guys 2 is powered by charm, originality, top-of-the-line animation and voice acting. The Bad Guys 2 is currently running in theatres

Vaibhavi Merchant wins National Award, says Dhindora Baje Re was always special

Choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant was on her way to work in London when a journalist informed her about her winning the National Award. Her song 'Dhindora Baje Re' from 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' won the Best Choreography award at the 71st National Awards an exclusive conversation with India Today, she said, "It all feels so surreal right now. Because I am not in the country, I didn't know it was happening today. It's an emotional moment, but it has yet to sink in. I am soon going to be 50, and I think it's come as a wonderful birthday surprise."advertisementThis is her second honour after 'Dholi Taro' from 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', but the excitement remains the same. Merchant shared what the award means to her. She said, "It's infused a lot of life back into my work. I'll be honest, as an artist, I still look at every new project as my first one. I still get those goosebumps and the nervous energy. I still choreograph all my pieces with butterflies in my stomach."She added, "For me, entering that rehearsal hall is sacrosanct; it's my temple, the world I was born into. It's also the world that brought me up. Dance is something I have known ever since I was a child. Also, because I've been trained in Bharatnatyam, any piece that celebrates semi-classical or Indian forms, and is encouraged in the Hindi film industry, becomes special for me." The choreographer added that people are often surprised by how she can pull off a classical and a contemporary song like 'Besharam Rang' in the same year. She shared that she "now feels there's an instinctive switch in her brain, which helps her take on different genres at the same time."Merchant discussed in detail the song that brought this honour. She mentioned that 'Dhindora Baje Re' was an extremely important part in the narrative, and kind of lifts the film."It almost felt like a pre-climactic scene, a sequence. For me, it was very clear that I wanted this to become the biggest number in the film. It comes at a very crucial point. Tota Roy Choudhury and Ranveer Singh also have a dance sequence from 'Dola Re Dola' just before that. I remember it was another high to get them to do Kathak, and because I am a huge Saroj Khan ji fan, it was rather very fulfilling," she 49-year-old also spoke about her experience of working with Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh. She said, "I also got to work with both my proteges, since I worked with Alia Bhatt and Ranveer in their first films. So for me to get both these artists to come and do the song was truly remarkable and special. It was my gift, my love for Karan. It's so much fun shooting with him, I would leave everything to be on Karan Johar's set any day."The choreographer added that every member of the film was a delight to work with. And while people keep talking about how the song was 'iconic', broke 'gender roles', Merchant shared that she doesn't work with such preconceived this happens later. It reaches legacy status much later when another generation that's waiting recognises it. Like I would watch a Saroj Khan or people prior to that generation and learn from them. So hopefully, we will also see those days someday," she added with a with the Best Choreography award, 'Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani' also bagged the award for Best Popular film for wholesome entertainment.- Ends
