Madras High Court permits renovation works at Kancheepuram Devarajaswamy Temple
Justice N. Anand Venkatesh disposed of a writ petition filed by Thathadesikar Thiruvamsathar Sabha after recording the submissions made by the temple's executive trustee R. Rajalakshmi that the works were being carried only with the concurrence of sthalathars, archakas and sthanigas.
Representing the temple management, advocate K.V. Babu told the court that the Devarajaswamy Temple was an ancient institution visited by thousands of devotees every day and hence it required certain changes from time to time to ensure better crowd managment practices.
The counsel said, the management had decided to lay a temporary ramp on the pathway leading to the garbagriha (sanctum sanctorum) for the benefit of the elderly and the differently-abled devotees and therefore, it could not be objected to by attaching religious significance to climbing the steps.
'The proposed modification is in accordance with Agamic traditions and for the safety and welfare of the public in general. Since these steps are steep and risky, the alteration has been suggested for the safety of the elderly and differently abled persons,' he said.
Similarly, the temple administration had decided to construct another ramp for the benefit of the devotees who throng in large numbers to touch a golden lizard found on the ceiling. Further, a pedestal bridge too had been planned to manage the crowd during peak seasons, he added.
Asserting that no sannidhis, deities or mural paintings would be disturbed during the renovation, the counsel said, the Heritage and Archaeological Preservation Committee had also reviewed and approved the renovation plan after being satisfied that no heritage structure would be disturbed.
Mr. Babu also informed the court the construction plan submitted by L&T had been examined thoroughly and approved by the Regional Level Empowered Committee as well as the State Level Empowered Committee constituted for the purpose of monitoring changes to ancient temples.

In 17th-century Mughal-era Shalimar Bagh, palace complex, 3 heritage-era cottages unveiled after restoration
Once in a dilapidated condition, the palace complex in the 17th-century Mughal-era Shalimar Bagh in North Delhi has now been restored to its former glory. Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday threw open to the public the revived Sheesh Mahal, a baradari (pavilion), and three heritage-era cottages. Of the three restored cottages, two have been adaptively reused — one now houses the 'Readers Café Corner', facilitating literary engagement, while 'Café Shalimar', the other, is where the visitors can come, eat, and enjoy with their loved ones. The third cottage has been repurposed for official use while maintaining its heritage character. The restoration was carried out by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) under the technical supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The work began following the L-G's visit to the site in January 2024. During that visit, the L-G had taken note of the dilapidated condition of the structures, which were buried under layers of silt and overgrown vegetation, according to the DDA. The Shalimar Bagh, DDA underlined, was built in 1653 and has witnessed multiple phases of Delhi's history — from the Mughal period to the British rule. As part of its restoration, while the ASI worked on conserving the architectural elements of Sheesh Mahal, the DDA redeveloped the surrounding garden in the traditional Char Bagh or a Persian-style garden layout. The baradari and cottages were restored using traditional material such as lakhori bricks, lime surkhi, lime concrete, and organic binders like gud, belgiri, and urad. Speaking at the unveiling event, Shekhawat said the Centre was committed to supporting conservation efforts in Delhi in line with the Prime Minister's vision of 'Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi' (development with heritage). Hitting out at the previous AAP government, Shekhawat said, 'When this restoration project was first taken up by L-G Saxena, there was a repulsive government in Delhi. Now, there is a double-engine force multiplying government in Delhi, and CM Gupta, this will transform Delhi into 'New Delhi' soon.' L-G Saxena said the project would help preserve Delhi's architectural legacy and urged citizens to safeguard such restored spaces from future neglect. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister gave credit to the L-G for taking the lead in protecting heritage sites across the Capital and thanked him for his 'constant guidance' in developmental work. DDA said the latest project follows its recent conservation work at sites such as Mehrauli Archaeological Park, Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti, St. James Church, and Anangpal Tomar Van.

Zeenat now in Similipal core, showing signs of pregnancy
BHUBANESWAR: Recaptured after escaping the Similipal landscape in December last year, tigress Zeenat has started settling down in the tiger reserve and is expected to give birth within the next two months. Speaking to The New Indian Express, a senior wildlife official of the Forest department informed that the Tadoba tigress mated with T-12, a dominant male in the core of Similipal South Division during mid-May and is now showing signs of pregnancy. 'The tigress has now stopped mating and has isolated herself from males, indicating that she is pregnant. Considering her mating in May third week and the typical gestation period of 105 to 120 days for big cats, we anticipate the tigress to give birth towards the end of August or early in September,' the wildlife official said adding, this is a very positive development as it indicates that the tigress has started marking her territory in the Similipal landscape. The senior officer further said once the big cat gives birth to the cubs, her chances of leaving the territory, at least for the next two to three years is negligible. He revealed Zeenat had been released back to the Similipal landscape two-and-a-half-months back. However, the release wasn't made public considering the headlines Similipal grabbed following the big cat's escape from the tiger reserve in December last year. 'We released the tigress towards April 16-17 and have been tracking her movement regularly through the radio collar since then,' he said. The three-year-old tigress brought from Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) of Maharashtra, as part of the big cat supplementation project in Similipal, kept forest officials of three states - Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal - on their toes for 23 days following its exit from STR north on December 7. It was recaptured in Bankura district of West Bengal and brought back to Similipal after a health check-up at Alipore Zoo in Kolkata, early morning on January 1 this year.

State's first tiger cub rewilding project awaits NTCA approval
Jaipur: In a groundbreaking conservation effort, Rajasthan's first-ever tiger rewilding project is approaching its final stage as two orphaned cubs have demonstrated remarkable hunting abilities in their controlled environments. The Forest Department has sought final approval from the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) to release the tigers into the wild. The cubs, who lost their mother, tigress T-114, in Nov 2022 when they were just two-and-a-half months old, have shown exceptional progress in their rehabilitation journey. After 22 months of careful nurturing at Abheda Biological Park, the siblings were separated and relocated in Dec 2024. The female, now designated as MT-7, was moved to Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve, while her brother was transferred to Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve. Each tiger currently occupies a five-hectare enclosure within their respective reserves. Both tigers have demonstrated impressive hunting skills. The female in Mukundra has made over 45 successful kills and her brother in Ramgarh shows similar prowess. Once permission is received, they will be released. This will mark the first rewilding project of tiger cubs in Rajasthan. The cubs are nearly 27 months old and will be released in accordance with protocol. " This project marks uncharted territory for Rajasthan's forest department.
