Subway workers vote to strike in row over pay and working conditions
Unite said more than 100 staff employed in Glasgow's Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) subway voted by 97.5% in favour of industrial action, with a series of 24-hour stoppages planned later this month.
Strikes are to take place on June 21, 25, 27 and 28 while an overtime ban will be in place from June 13.
The union warned that chronic under-staffing has led to the subway system struggling, with train drivers and station staff often working up to 10 hours over their contract of 39 hours per week.
Unite said that SPT has not made any improvements, and that staff are frequently called in to work additional shifts at short notice.
The subway system will be closed on the day of the Punk All Dayer festival in Bellahouston Park, which features acts like Sex Pistols, the Sting, Simple Minds and Stereophonics
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: 'Unite's Glasgow subway members membership feel totally devalued and ignored.
'We will not tolerate our members being exhausted and underpaid. The subway system is running on empty.
'SPT has had every opportunity to resolve the chronic issues that have resulted in this dispute but have chosen not to act.'
Andrew Brown, Unite industrial officer, said: 'The strike action will cause major disruption across the subway system but this is entirely the fault of SPT's management which has continuously ignored the workers' concerns about being overstretched and under-staffed.'
SPT has been approached for comment.

Veolia takes legal action against Unite
A waste management firm is taking legal action against a leading trade union involved in a long-running dispute over union recognition. Veolia said it has started legal action against Unite and its general Sharon Graham, claiming defamation. The company said the move followed months of protests and 'smear campaigns' by the union and attempts to harm its business. Since August 2024, dozens of Unite members based in Sheffield have been on strike in pursuit of union recognition, which Veolia claimed included a campaign of defamation. The company said Unite's actions seek to pressure it into breaking an existing union recognition agreement in place at its Sheffield site with the GMB union. A Veolia spokesperson said: 'We do not take this legal action lightly, but we must stand up against Unite's excessive tactics that are in total contrast to the quality of our industrial relations in the UK. 'Despite working closely with five trade union partners across the UK, including Unite, we find ourselves targeted by this defamatory campaign. 'We will always support good industrial relations but we will not allow anyone to attack our business, our reputation, our colleagues or our partners with baseless accusations.' Unite has been approached for a comment.

Canteen staff at Fawley refinery are set to strike in a move their union says will leave fellow workers at the huge site "famished". Caterers employed by the London-based Compass Group are threatening to walk out later this month and again in August over what the union Unite describes as "poverty pay". Unite claims that canteen workers receive only slightly more than the minimum wage. According to the union, Compass is the world's largest catering provider and made more than £1.2bn in operating profits in the six months to March 2025. It makes a wide range of everyday products using processes that provide employment for more than 2,500 staff and contractors. A spokesperson for Eurest, which is part of Compass, said: "We are disappointed by the decision of our employees to ballot for industrial action. "We have proposed a pay offer we believe is fair in light of the current economic backdrop. Our colleagues are all paid Real Living Wage or above and have access to a range of benefits. We remain open to resolving this issue swiftly. 'We have put in place alternative arrangements to ensure catering is still provided to the employees on site while industrial action is underway." Esso is part of ExxonMobil, which said the proposed strikes were not in anyone's interest. "We encourage employers and representatives to work together constructively to reach a resolution as quickly as possible. We have taken contingencies to ensure on-site personnel are not impacted."
