
Oman explores millet cultivation for the first time
Millets encompass a diverse group of cereals well-known for their mineral, protein and antioxidant rich properties. The fibre content of these grains is also known to play an important role in regulating intestinal function, blood sugar levels, and lipid metabolism. Lately, millet has been the focus of growing global attention as a cost-effective alternative that can contribute to strengthening food security.
Pondering the introduction of millet cultivation domestically is Oman Flour Mills (OFM), one of the country's largest food companies majority-owned by the government through Nitaj (Oman Food Investment Holding Company). Nitaj represents the food sector investment arm of Oman Investment Authority (OIA).
Commenting on the company's vision for millet cultivation in Oman, Ahmed bin Ali al Bulushi, Chairman of the Board of Directors at OFM Group, said: 'OFM is in the final stages of importing millet seeds, with plans to cultivate millets in Oman to capitalise on the country's favourable growing conditions and diversify agricultural production.' The planned foray into millet cultivation is in line with OFM's mandate to secure access to grain commodities – chiefly wheat, corn and barley – in a timely manner and at cost-competitive rates. In support of this goal, the company has invested in silo complexes in Muscat and Suhar for the storage of imported grain, as well as adequate milling capacity. OFM also ranks among the largest players in Oman's feed mill sector, which is an important source of different types of feed for the country's livestock, poultry and fish farms as well.
Significantly, Oman's proposed venture into millet cultivation aligns with a global shift towards the inclusion of these cereals in national diets due to their affordability and health benefits. Underscoring this shift, the UN General Assembly, in collaboration with the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets (IYM 2023) during its 75th session.
Millets are also known to adapt to harsh climate conditions, making the drought-resistant crop particularly suitable for cultivation in countries like Oman. Besides strengthening food security, millet cultivation is also expected to open up opportunities for small-scale farmers, helping them supplement incomes from the farming of wheat, as well as fruits and vegetables.
In 2024, around 10,000 tonnes of locally grown Omani wheat were procured by OFM directly from farmers under a Subsidised Wheat Procurement Programme initiated in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources. It represented a 100 per cent increase in procurement last year, up from around 5,000 tonnes a year earlier.

Oman's non-oil exports increase 7% to RO2.7bn
By GULAM ALI KHAN Muscat – Buoyed by strong demand for Omani products in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and India, the sultanate's non-oil exports recorded a robust increase of over 7% during the first five months of 2025. According to data released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), Oman's total non-oil exports rose by 7.2% to RO2.701bn between January and May 2025, compared to RO2.521bn during the same period in 2024. The growth was largely driven by rising demand from key regional and global markets. Exports to the United Arab Emirates surged by nearly 23%, reaching RO485mn in the January–May period of 2025, up from RO395mn during the corresponding period last year. Shipments to Saudi Arabia climbed by 34.9% to RO451mn, compared to RO335mn a year earlier. India also emerged as a strong market for Omani products, with non-oil exports increasing by 38.9% to RO280mn in the first five months of 2025, from RO202mn in the same period of 2024. The NCSI data indicated that the recovery in non-oil exports is broad-based across nearly all of Oman's major trading partners – with the notable exception of the United States. This performance highlights the continued success of Omani exporters in expanding their reach and meeting overseas demand. However, exports to the United States fell by 17.5% to RO159mn in the first five months of this year, down from RO193mn during the same period last year. Non-oil exports to other countries also recorded modest growth of 1.5%, amounting to RO1.125bn between January and May 2025, compared to RO1.108bn in 2024. In terms of product categories, Oman's mineral product exports stood at RO716mn in the first five months of 2025, slightly lower than RO721mn during the same period last year. Exports of chemical products, however, rose by 9.2% to RO339mn, up from RO311mn. With enhanced production capacity in Oman's downstream industries, exports of plastics, rubber and related items remained relatively stable at RO394mn, compared to RO399mn in the corresponding period of 2024. Base metals and related articles contributed RO568mn in export value during the five-month period, reflecting a 1.4% increase from RO560mn last year. Meanwhile, exports of live animals and animal products rose by 9.9% to RO164mn. In contrast, Oman's re-export activity declined by 10.3% in the first five months of 2025, falling to RO623mn from RO695mn during the same period in 2024. This drop was primarily attributed to lower transshipments of transport equipment and mineral products.

Supervision programme launched for Omani start-ups
MUSCAT: The Omani Start-up Accelerator has launched the 'Supervision and Follow-up' programme - an initiative designed to support the sustained growth of emerging start-ups across the Sultanate of Oman. Targeting start-ups that have graduated from the accelerator or hold the official 'Start-up Card' issued by the Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development (ASMED), the programme will run from July 2025 to January 2026. It offers a robust six-month support system tailored to guide start-ups through their critical early-growth phase. The programme delivers a wide array of integrated services, including specialised advisory sessions covering financial management, legal compliance and business model development. It also enhances technical readiness and market access, equipping start-ups to confidently scale into regional and international markets. 'This programme is a strategic extension of our efforts to institutionalise start-up growth in Oman,' said Qais al Toubi, General Supervisor of the Rising Omani Start-ups Programme and Deputy President for Finance and Investment. 'It delivers hands-on, targeted support to help start-ups overcome sector-specific challenges, build investment readiness and grow in line with Oman Vision 2040.' The initiative also facilitates participation in entrepreneurship exhibitions and investment conferences, provides fully-equipped office spaces and organises regular networking sessions with investors and sector experts - ensuring that start-ups receive holistic support. A key feature of the programme is its active monitoring mechanism, which tracks each start-up's growth trajectory, ensuring that clear milestones are achieved throughout the supervision period. The initiative is a joint effort between ASMED and Madayn, through its enabling arm, the Industrial Innovation Academy, reflecting a national commitment to building a globally competitive start-up ecosystem. By enhancing investment readiness and enabling expansion into new markets, the 'Supervision and Follow-up' programme is expected to empower Omani entrepreneurs to take their ventures to the next level - contributing positively to the diversification and resilience of the national economy.

Oman opens visa, medical examination centre in Manila
Manila, Philippines – Oman Visa and Medical Examination Centre was inaugurated in the Philippines capital Manila on Monday as part of a strategic initiative by the sultanate to streamline and regulate work visa procedures in accordance with employment contracts approved under Omani Labour Law. The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of H E Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, and H E Dr Mahad bin Said Ba'awin, Minister of Labour. The centre is a comprehensive, one-stop facility, including bio- metric fingerprint registration, medical examinations, document and employment contract attestation, and other services. Designed to enhance efficiency, protect both workers and employers, and reduce reliance on unregulated intermediaries, the centre enables employers to verify skills and qualifications to ensure they match job requirements. Additionally, the centre provides services such as issuing Omani phone numbers and opening bank accounts in Oman. It also features a dedicated application information centre and will conduct awareness sessions on workers' rights and obligations. These activities will ensure workers receive the necessary information and support throughout the employment process, facilitating a smooth pre-departure experience, a statement said. The Manila centre is the first in a series of similar facilities Oman plans to establish in key labour-exporting countries, with additional centres expected to open in the near future. 'This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance labour mobility frameworks and safeguard the rights of workers and employers in accordance with Omani Labour Law.' The Omani delegation held official talks with the Philippines Department of Migrant Workers, where both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to protecting workers and employers while promoting ethical employment practices. The two sides agreed to cooperate closely to ensure the success of this initiative in line with their mutual objectives. The event was attended by H E Nasser bin Said al Manwari, Oman's Ambassador to the Philippines.
