Lloyds Bank customers hit with huge change ahead of key service being axed

Daily Mirror03-06-2025
From this week, customers can no longer pay in cheques using a pay-in slip at their nearest Post Office - instead, you'll need to use your debit card and enter your PIN
Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland have made a major change to how customers deposit cheques at Post Office branches. From this week, customers can no longer pay in cheques using a pay-in slip.
Instead, you'll need to use your debit card and enter your PIN to complete the deposit. It comes as part of wider plans from Lloyds Banking Group to completely axe the ability for its customers to deposit cheques at their local Post Offices from this December.

It means customers will have to travel to their nearest Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland branch, or use mobile banking, to deposit cheques.

A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson told The Sun: "Most customers use our app as the easiest way to pay in a cheque, by taking a photo on their phone and letting us take care of the rest. Very few customers are choosing to deposit cheques in at the Post Office."
It comes after Lloyds Bank increased the monthly fee on its Club Lloyds packaged bank account this week from £3 to £5. The monthly fee is still waived if you pay in £2,000 or more each month.
A packaged bank account is a type of current account that includes additional benefits. Club Lloyds gives you one lifestyle benefit each year - you can choose between a Disney+ subscription, six cinema tickets, a magazine subscription, or 25% off certain food and drink brands.
You also get access to the Club Lloyds Monthly Saver which pays 6.25% gross/AER on up to £400 a month, and up to 15% cashback at selected retailers.
This monthly fee also applies to Club Lloyds Silver and Club Lloyds Platinum accounts, although you have to pay extra on top for these accounts. You pay an additional £11.50 a month for Silver account, and £22.50 a month for Platinum.

But in some good news, Lloyds removed debit card foreign currency fees from April 14. This applies when you pay in the local currency - if you choose to pay in pound sterling, you may still be charged.
Lloyds explains on its website: 'If you pay for something in pounds sterling, the provider of the currency conversion may still charge you. Some cash machine providers may also charge a fee.'
The interest-free allowance on Club Lloyds arranged overdrafts has also increased from £50 to £100. A Lloyds spokesperson said: "Our Club Lloyds range offers our customers lifestyle benefits including Disney+, cinema tickets, and magazine subscriptions, and access to market leading mortgage and savings rates."

£185 in cash and free cinema tickets: July's best offers to switch banks

Millions of people have switched their main bank using the Current Account Switch Service (CASS) – it's free, easy and can move you, your money and your payments from one bank to another in around a week or so. Usually, though, people aren't just moving for the fun of it, of course: banks and building societies have a pretty fierce battle for your custom and so, from time to time, some will offer incentives to switch to them worth hundreds of pounds. Every month we run down the very best of them, but as ever it's important to look beyond just the initial cash offer you'll receive and make sure that the rest of the perks, the terms and the fees associated with any accounts suit your circumstances and needs. A bank should work for you and so should your money – so here are the best offers around at the moment to consider. Lloyds: £185 Launched from the start of July, Lloyds Bank will give you £185 in cash, a market leading initial sum, but you have to open a specific type of account with them. Those are either a Club Lloyds or a Premier Account, both of which have fees. We'll focus on the Club Lloyds here as the Premier requires an income or assets of over £100,000. The Club account is £5 a month but this is reimbursed if you put in more than £2,000 a month – a good example of why you should always make sure the account suits your needs. In addition you'll get access to a savings account offering 6.25 per cent, plus the choice of an extra perk – cinema tickets, a coffee club membership for reduced price food and drink, a Disney plus subscription or other similar bonuses. Check out more about the offer here. Nationwide: £200 If you're already a Nationwide member through a mortgage, ISA or other product, you might be eligible for a switch bonus of £200 – but as it's not for all switchers, it can't reasonably be called the market leader at this stage. This offer runs up until 10 July so if you're already with them for one of your services and want to move your current account to the building society too, it might suit you – but you need to move fast. Santander: £180 There are three different account types with Santander which you can switch to and get £180, ranging from free to a £5 monthly fee and with their own different perks and bonuses included. Cashback on household bills, interest on balances and no fees when spending abroad are among the different considerations when choosing between the account types. A long-running offer which had previously been the market leader, first direct, owned by HSBC, offers £175 for switching. It also gives access to a high-interest saving account offering a hefty 7 per cent rate, for up to £300 a month, with a 'no fees abroad' debit card also included which might appeal to some frequent travellers. Alternatives There are quite a few banks currently offering either lower amounts or different types of perks when joining. Zopa don't offer a joining fee but give interest on account balances as well as a higher 7.1 per cent rate savings account. Natwest offer £125 for switching and an extra £50 for opening a savings account afterwards. Others may offer better cashback rates, foreign exchange rates or other perks which are of interest. Remember to check Always, always ensure you are eligible for any bonuses before starting the switch process – you often cannot get the cash bonus if you've had an account with the bank or building society over the last few years, or if you've benefited from the bonus previously. That also extends to brands owned by the same bank – so for Lloyds, you can't have had it for Halifax, for example. Usually you'll also need a certain amount of direct debits to be switched, deposit a certain amount and do other tasks like log in to the app within a certain timeframe, so make sure the bank account you choose suits your needs completely.

'We'll let you know when it's done – in the meantime, you can still use your old account,' Lloyds says. 'Your switch is covered by the switch guarantee' On your switch date, Lloyds will transfer your balance and close your old account. ‌ They will move over all incoming payments (like your salary) and outgoing payments (like direct debits and standing orders), and redirect payments made to your old account and give the payor your new details. Natwest, Lloyds and Halifax to shut 82 bank branches starting from TODAY- check if your local is safe

NATWEST, Lloyds and Halifax will close a total of 82 branches starting from today, in another blow to the high street. The major high street lenders have already reduced their portfolio of physical branches in recent years, as young customers continue to favour online banking. 1 Lloyds will close two branches today across Norfolk and Cornwall. Its branches in Fakenham and Wadebridge are due to shut today July 1, as part of planned closures announced earlier this year. Last month, the move to reduce its physical estate saw 16 bank branches wiped off the high street. The major lender which serves millions of customers across the UK, is expected to close a further 23 banks before the end of 2025. That includes sites across Sheffield, Manchester and Bristol. Halifax, which is also part of Lloyds banking group, will close a total of 25 bank branches before the end of the year. The high street branch will close on branch in Pontypridd in Wales on July 15. This comes after the lender closed 15 sites in June, with a remaining 24 branches set to shutter in September, October and November of this year. Elsewhere, NatWest will close 32 branches before the end of year, as it looks to pull back from bricks-and-mortar banking. Since 2015, the NatWest Group — which also includes Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank — has shut 1,409 branches. NatWest to close 53 bank branches in fresh blow to UK high street – see if your local is affected In 2023, the bank closed nearly 20 locations, followed by 48 more closures last year. Branches will start to shut from September, with the last closure of 2025 due to take place at the end on October. In June, the lender closed a total of 24 branches. Despite the closures, the bank has plans to invest £20million in its remaining network to modernise services and reduce environmental impact. Customers are being forgotten, writes The Sun's Head of Consumer, Tara Evans. With branches closing and online banking taking over, customers can be left feeling cut off. We wrote about forgotten customers back in July on our Sun Money pages in our weekly newspaper section. People like David Elkins, 82, a retired service engineer from Calne, Wilts, who saw his HSBC branch close in 2023 and had to travel ten miles to the next nearest. He has a kidney issue and needs frequent dialysis, making it impractical. Banking hubs are emerging as a solution to address the gaps left by widespread closures - but there are not enough of them. There are plans for 146 of these, but so far there are only 60. You can use one of the Post Office's 11,635 branches to perform basic banking tasks, but they don't allow you to open or close accounts for example.
