Right-wing influencers respond to Mamdani win with anti-Islam attacks
Right-wing influencers have reacted to New York State Assembly member Zohran Mamdani's apparent win in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary with anti-Islam attacks.
'.@ZohranKMamdani hasn't even been a US citizen for 10 years. He is literally supported by terrorists. NYC is about to see 9/11 2.0,' right-wing activist Laura Loomer, who has a history of anti-Muslim comments, said on the social platform X late Tuesday.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, shocked American political observers Tuesday as he seemed to be on the path to winning the Democratic nomination for the Big Apple's mayor over former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. He immigrated to the U.S. from Uganda as a child and has spent most of his life in the nation's biggest city. If he clinches New York City's top job, he would be its first Muslim and Asian mayor.
'In the words of Nelson Mandela: it always seems impossible until it's done. My friends, it is done. And you are the ones who did it. I am honored to be your Democratic nominee for the Mayor of New York City,' Mamdani said in an X post early Wednesday.
Conservative activist Charlie Kirk said in his own post on X that '24 years ago a group of Muslims killed 2,753 people on 9/11.'
'Now a Muslim Socialist is on pace to run New York City,' he added.
In response to another user on X saying that they were 'old enough to remember when New Yorkers endured 9/11 instead of voting for it,' Donald Trump Jr. said Wednesday that 'New York City has fallen.'
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Wednesday posted a picture on X of a figure wearing clothing similar to attire some Muslim women wear in place of the Statue of Liberty.
'This hits hard,' she captioned the picture.
Greene's fellow southern Republican, Rep. Nancy Mace (S.C.), posted a photo of Mamdani seeming to greet someone.
'After 9/11 we said 'Never Forget.' I think we sadly have forgotten,' Mace's photo was captioned.
The Hill has reached out to Mamdani's campaign for comment.
