Himachal DGP Verma retires sans official farewell
Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had on May 27 directed Verma, additional chief secretary (ACS) Onkar Chand Sharma and Shimla superintendent of police (SP) Sanjeev Gandhi to proceed on leave. The development came amid a slugfest within the state police force triggered by the probe into the death of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) chief engineer-cum-general manager Vimal Negi, who died under suspicious circumstances in March this year.
Meanwhile, the government has officially handed over the additional charge of the DGP to IPS Ashok Tiwari. Chief secretary Prabodh Saxena issued related orders on Saturday which mentioned that Tiwari would look after the work of DGP till further orders.
The state government had formed a panel of three senior IPS officers — Shyam Bhagat Negi, Ashok Tiwari and Rakesh Agarwal — who are being seen frontrunners for post of DGP.
Meanwhile, DGP Atul Verma, before retiring, issued an order awarding DGP Disc to 172 police personnel, but it was soon withdrawn by Tiwari. The order issued by Verma read, 'On the recommendations of the committee constituted for the award of DGP Disc-2024, 172 police officers/ officials were awarded with the DGP Disc in recognition of their outstanding work during year 2024.'
DGP (jail) SR Ojha also retired on Saturday. The chief secretary issued an order for handing over the additional charge of the jail department to ADGP (law and order) Abhishek Trivedi.

Madras HC seeks TN reply on procedure to be followed for appointing new DGP
MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Monday sought response from the state on the procedure to be adopted by it for appointing new DGP/head of police force, as incumbent DGP Shankar Jiwal is retiring on August 31. A bench of justices SM Subramaniam and AD Maria Clete gave the direction on a PIL petition filed by K Yasar Arafath of Ramanathapuram, seeking to stop the government from extending Jiwal's tenure or appointing an acting DGP, without taking any steps for empanelling eligible IPS officers and forwarding their names to the UPSC for preparing a panel. Arafath alleged that the government is deliberately doing so to ensure that an officer of its choice leads the police force till the 2026 Assembly poll. He wanted the government to appoint the new DGP through the mandatory process prescribed by the Supreme Court in 2006 Prakash Singh case.

FIR against party leader over ‘A for Akhilesh, B for Babasaheb', Samajwadi Party chief hits back

The controversy erupted after a video of one such class surfaced on social media. In the footage, schoolchildren—wearing uniforms and reportedly from a private school—were seen being taught alternative alphabet associations such as: A for Akhilesh, B for Babasaheb (Ambedkar), D for Dimple (Yadav) and M for Mulayam Singh Yadav. The complaint also mentioned that comparing Babasaheb Dr BR Ambedkar to Akhilesh and Dimple was an insult to the Dalit icon. According to police officials, the content raised concerns of political indoctrination of minors, prompting the registration of a case under relevant sections, including Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section 353(2) (statements conducing to public mischief) and section 3(2)(V) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Farhad Gada, who runs the PDA Pathshala—named after the SP's social justice plank 'Pichda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak' (Backward Classes, Dalits, Minorities) plank—defended the lessons. He claimed the goal was not merely to teach ABCs but to 'educate children about the great men of Samajwadi ideology' and foster political awareness from a young age. Gada also revealed his ambition to expand such schools throughout the district. Taking to the social media platform X, Akhilesh Yadav wrote, 'Even the British did not file an FIR for studying. The anti-education face of the BJP has now been exposed to the public.'

Rumours swirl on eve of Art 370 abrogation anniv
Srinagar: Amid rumours of further bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir a day before the sixth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, CM Omar Abdullah on Monday said "nothing will happen tomorrow". "I've heard every possible permutation & combination about what to expect in J&K tomorrow so let me stick my neck out and say nothing will happen tomorrow - fortunately nothing bad will happen but unfortunately nothing positive will happen either (sic)," Omar wrote on X, as the state remained abuzz that Jammu may become a separate state. "I'm still optimistic about something positive for J&K in this monsoon session of Parliament but not tomorrow (sic)," Omar said in a veiled reference to restoration of statehood, adding: "And no, I haven't had any meetings or conversations with people in Delhi. This is just a gut feeling. Let's see this time tomorrow." While Omar appeared to dismiss the rumours, PDP's Iltija Mufti said, "Since a week now, hushed whispers suggest something drastic yet again is in the offing. Insinuations dressed in metaphors & dark humour."
