Israel or Iran... Who is Pakistan ally Azerbaijan a friend or foe of? Locked horns with both countries at once — Here's Why
New Delhi: In a major development, Pakistan's ally Azerbaijan has issued a warning to both Israel and Iran regarding the use of its airspace. According to the reports, Azerbaijan has cautioned that its territory must not be used in any way for attacks on a third party. Azerbaijan, on Saturday, assured neighboring Iran that it would not allow its territory to be used for attacks against Tehran. This comes after Israel launched deadly airstrikes on Iranian bases. Iran has long expressed concerns that Israel might use Azerbaijani land to carry out attacks. It is important to note that Israel is a close ally of Azerbaijan and a major arms supplier to the country.
Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov told his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, 'Azerbaijan will never allow its territory to be used for attacks against third countries, including friendly Iran.'
According to Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry press service, Bayramov, during a phone call with Araghchi, warned that 'there is a risk of the conflict expanding to a broader region' and called for 'diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.'
The ministry also stated that Azerbaijan had facilitated overland transit across its borders after Iran closed its airspace in response to Israeli attacks. Azerbaijan-Israel Relation:
Based on shared interests and extensive military cooperation, Israel and Azerbaijan have maintained strategic relations for decades. It is important to note that Azerbaijan is a major supplier of oil to Israel, while it acquires advanced Israeli weapons—drones, air defense systems, and cutting-edge defense technologies.
Relations deepened further after the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, during which Israeli weapons played a decisive role in Azerbaijan's battlefield success. Both countries also share concerns over Iran's regional ambitions and its nuclear program. Azerbaijan is a neighbor of Iran:
Azerbaijan shares a long border with Iran. It also hosts a significant ethnic Azerbaijani population within Iran's borders. Not only that, tensions between Azerbaijan and Iran also exist over Armenia. For the past few years, Azerbaijan has been trying to take control of the Zangezur Corridor, which lies within Armenian territory. Azerbaijan and Turkey support this corridor, while Armenia wants to retain its control over it.

Too soon to sound the ‘all clear' on the risk of rising oil prices: Finance Ministry report
It is too soon to sound the 'all clear' on the risk of rising oil prices, even though the risk from the Israel-Iran conflict has receded following the ceasefire between the two countries, the Ministry of Finance said in a report. According to the Monthly Economic Report (MER) for May 2025 released by the Department of Economic Affairs on Friday (June 27, 2025), the Israel-Iran war could have threatened India's growth and fiscal outlook for the current financial year 2025-26. However, the two countries agreed to a ceasefire earlier this month and oil prices have since fallen by about 6-7%. Explained | Why oil prices are increasing amidst Iran-Israel tensions 'There is an ample global supply of oil, but insurance costs and the perceived risk of potential closure of choke points might cause the landed price to rise,' the report warned. 'Therein lies the risk to India. For now, the risk has receded.' 'But, it is too soon to sound the 'all clear' for the rest of the year,' it added. 'But, then, we have to get used to doing the balancing act or the high-wire act for some time to come. In this, India is on a better footing than many other nations.' The Department of Economic Affairs report said that the Indian economy may experience 'nervous but exciting times' in the days ahead. Also Read | The ongoing oil price tensions Overall, the report noted that with no major factors leading to an imbalance in the country's macroeconomic aggregates, a subdued inflation rate and a 'growth-supportive monetary policy stance', India's macroeconomic health is in a 'relative goldilocks situation'. While highlighting the 6.5% growth real GDP growth estimate 2024-25, the report said that the first two months of 2025-26 also point to resilience in economic activity. 'High-frequency indicators such as e-way bill generation, fuel consumption, and PMI indices point to continued resilience,' the report said. 'Rural demand has strengthened further, supported by a healthy rabi harvest and a positive monsoon outlook.' Explained | How will Israel-Iran conflict impact India? Urban consumption, it added, was being bolstered by increased leisure and business travel, as seen from the rise in air passenger traffic and hotel occupancy. However, it also pointed out that there are signs of softening of demand in areas like construction inputs and vehicle sales.

Trump says rolled back idea to remove sanctions on Iran because Tehran's ‘anger, hatred and…'
In a rather angry message to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, US President Donald Trump on Friday claimed that Tehran's 'anger, hatred, and disgust' made him drop working on possible removal of sanctions. In a post on Truth Social, Donald Trump on Saturday warned Iran, saying that the country would have to get back into the 'World Order flow' or 'things will only get worse for them'. 'During the last few days, I was working on the possible removal of sanctions, and other things, which would have given a much better chance to Iran at a full, fast, and complete recovery - The sanctions are BITING!' Trump wrote. 'But no, instead I get hit with a statement of anger, hatred, and disgust, and immediately dropped all work on sanction relief, and more. Iran has to get back into the World Order flow, or things will only get worse for them,' he added in his long message. Trump on Friday dismissed media reports that said his administration had discussed possibly helping Iran access as much as $30 billion to build a civilian-energy-producing nuclear program. According to reports published by CNN and NBC News on Thursday and Friday respectively, the Trump administration in recent days had explored possible economic incentives for Iran in return for its government halting uranium enrichment. The reports cited sources. CNN cited officials as saying that several proposals were floated and were preliminary. "Who in the Fake News Media is the SleazeBag saying that 'President Trump wants to give Iran $30 Billion to build non-military Nuclear facilities? Never heard of this ridiculous idea," Trump wrote on Truth Social late on Friday, calling the reports a 'HOAX.' Since April, Iran and the US have held indirect talks aimed at finding a new diplomatic solution regarding Iran's nuclear program. Tehran says its program is peaceful and Washington says it wants to ensure Iran cannot build a nuclear weapon, a Reuters report said. Iran held a state funeral service on Saturday for around 60 people, including its military commanders, killed in its war with Israel, after Tehran's top diplomat condemned Donald Trump's comments on supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as 'unacceptable', an AFP report said. The proceedings started at 8:00 am local time (0430 GMT) in the capital Tehran as government offices and many businesses were closed on Saturday for the occasion. "The ceremony to honour the martyrs has officially started," state TV said, showing footage of thousands of people donning black clothes, waving Iranian flags and holding pictures of the slain military commanders. According to the report, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, along with other senior government officials and military commanders – including Esmail Qaani, head of the Quds Force, the foreign operations arm of the Revolutionary Guards – attended the event.
