
AI leadership roles up 40-60% in FY25 as talent demand soars
The roles in demand include chief AI officer, head of AI/ML, vice-president – AI engineering, VP – AI strategy/innovation, VP – machine learning or GenAI, director – applied AI or innovation, director – GenAI applications, director - data science, AI product head and AI solutions architect.
A significant jump in hiring in this space was seen in the last two-three quarters, staffing firms said. Accenture, LTIMindtree, IBM, Deloitte and Wipro are among top companies that are hiring for such positions, as per staffing services firm Ciel HR. 'This spike correlates with the shift from pilot AI initiatives to scaled enterprise adoption,' said Krishna Vij, vice president at Teamlease Digital. 'Industry has realised that AI is now a boardroom priority for their clients and are positioning AI leadership talent to drive consulting-led engagements, co-create industry-specific AI solutions, and directly influence business outcome.'
Companies are increasingly tying compensation to business impact, and top talent in this space is seeing faster progression into CXO or other management positions, she said.
'India is a strategic hub for Accenture's global AI innovation powered by exceptional data and AI talent. We nurture expertise across the AI value chain and career levels," Accenture told ET.LTIMindtree, which in March appointed Nachiket Deshpande to the newly created position of president - global AI services, strategic deals and partnerships, said while announcing the appointment: "This strategic appointment demonstrates our commitment to being a proactive, agile organisation, capitalising on fast-emerging trends and reinforcing our position as an industry leader."Demand for AI leadership talent is expected to see double-digit growth in FY26 and beyond owing to the rising strategic significance of the technology, experts said.
Seasoned leaders in demand
The launch of enterprise-ready GenAI pilots, combined with emerging AI regulation frameworks that emphasise ethical leadership, has accelerated the urgency for capable hands at the top, said Kapil Joshi, chief executive of Quess IT Staffing.'Organisations are no longer experimenting—they are scaling. And that shift requires seasoned AI leaders who can steer strategy, governance, and innovation in unison.'Chief AI officers are offered ₹1.2-2.5 crore annually, while heads of AI/ML typically earn ₹80 lakh to ₹1.5 crore, as per Quess data. Among others, the salary package for VPs - GenAI/ML ranges from ₹70 lakh to ₹1.2 crore range, while directors - AI innovation typically earn ₹80 lakh to ₹1 crore.Salary growth is projected to continue at 15–20% annually, especially in roles linked to responsible AI frameworks and GenAI innovations, as per Quess.Professionals with hands-on experience in deploying GenAI, LLMs, or enterprise-scale AI frameworks as well as domain depth are highly sought after, experts said.Yet, talent scarcity, domain-specific expertise, and retention of top leaders remain key challenges for employers, said Aditya Narayan Mishra, managing director and CEO, Ciel HR.'With demand outpacing supply, organisations are paying a premium for younger AI leaders,' he added.For instance, in some cases, Ciel sees the Head-AI role commanding the highest entry-level salary at ₹36 lakh for four years of experience, reflecting the premium companies place on AI capabilities.

Three Indian infra investment trusts eye $500 million debt in coming weeks, sources say
Three Indian infrastructure investment trusts , including the National Highways Infrastructure Trust , are planning to raise up to 43 billion rupees ($499 million) through corporate bonds in the coming weeks, three sources familiar with the matter said. NHIT is in talks with merchant bankers and investors to raise around 15 billion rupees through three-year bonds, the sources, who did not want to be named because the discussions are private, said. None of the infrastructure investment trusts , or InvITs, responded to Reuters emails seeking comment. InvITs typically raise capital through a combination of units and bonds. According to Prime Database, InvITs and real estate investment trusts (REITs) together raised more than 178 billion rupees in the January-June period. NHIT last tapped the bond market in January, while Cube Highways raised funds through bonds in April. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has raised serious concerns about how deeply young people are starting to rely on ChatGPT for personal decision-making. Speaking at a banking conference hosted by the Federal Reserve, Altman said he finds it troubling that some young users feel they cannot make life choices without consulting the chatbot. According to Altman, a significant number of users in their teens and twenties say things like, 'ChatGPT knows me, it knows my friends — I'll just do what it says,' which he described as both 'bad' and 'dangerous.' He emphasized that this is not a fringe behavior but rather a widespread pattern among younger demographics. OpenAI, he added, is now actively exploring ways to address this over-dependence. Referring to comments made at a previous Sequoia Capital event, he noted that older users typically treat ChatGPT like a search engine, while those in their twenties and thirties often turn to it as a life advisor. Survey Backs Up the Trend Altman's remarks come on the heels of a Common Sense Media survey which found that 72% of teenagers have used an AI companion at least once. The survey, conducted among 1,060 teens aged 13 to 17, also revealed that 52% used AI tools at least a few times each month. Notably, half of them said they trusted the advice they received — with younger teens (ages 13–14) showing higher levels of trust compared to older ones. Trust vs. Capability: Warnings from Experts These findings mirror concerns raised by AI pioneers like Geoffrey Hinton, who admitted in a CBS interview that despite his skepticism about AI's accuracy, he still finds himself trusting its responses too often. Hinton highlighted how even highly trained models like GPT-4 can falter on simple logic problems, suggesting that blind trust can be dangerous. Altman echoed similar concerns, stating that even if AI provides helpful and accurate guidance, the idea of letting it dictate life decisions raises ethical and psychological questions. 'Collectively deciding we're going to live our lives the way AI tells us — that feels bad and dangerous,' he said. Beyond personal over-reliance, Altman also addressed growing security threats from AI misuse. At the same conference, he warned financial institutions about cyber risks such as voice cloning and deepfakes. He criticized banks that still use voice-based authentication, calling it 'crazy' in a time when AI can easily mimic voices with near-perfect accuracy. He further predicted that the rise of realistic video deepfakes could soon make even facial recognition systems vulnerable. 'We're approaching a fraud crisis,' Altman said, urging institutions to stay ahead of malicious AI applications.
