Lake County Recorder Gina Pimentel announces run for auditor in 2026

Chicago Tribune12-05-2025
Lake County Recorder Gina Pimentel will run for Lake County Auditor in 2026, she recently announced.
Pimentel, 38, said she can't run for reelection as recorder because of term limits. As she thought about her career, Pimentel said running for auditor seemed like a strong next step because the auditor's office and the recorder's office work together, like during the property transfer process.
'I think this is a good next step,' Pimentel said. 'I am an in-person, hands-on elected official and office holder that has the county's best interest in mind.'
In addition to Pimentel's candidacy, Lake County Democratic Chairman Mike Repay said current auditor Peggy Holinga Katona is seeking reelection. In the primary election, Repay said the party will remain neutral on candidates.
Lake County Treasurer John Petalas, who has served as auditor in the past, said he is seeking reelection as treasurer. He declined to comment on the auditor's race.
If elected, Pimentel said she would focus on retraining employees in the deductions department to ensure people qualifying for a homestead, over the age of 65, disabled and disabled veterans receive the proper deductions.
Pimentel said she would take the training with the employees, if elected auditor. Given that deductions are the top reason residents visit the auditor's office, Pimentel said employee retraining on the matter would benefit the office.
Further, Pimentel said she would also like to bring back an in-person tax sale process to prevent fraud and increase the collection rate. While doing the tax sale online was efficient during the COVID-19 pandemic, it's a good time to start an in-person process, she said.
'That's something that I would like to play more offense not defense,' Pimentel said. 'There are ways for improvement and there are ways to avoid certain things that do happen in the tax sale.'
Pimentel was elected recorder in 2020 after serving 5 years as chief deputy recorder under previous Lake County Recorder Michael Brown, who left office after he and some of his staff were subpoenaed in front of the Lake County Council to answer questions about his absenteeism for 18 months.
As recorder, Pimentel said she's most proud of how efficient the office has become. The office has focused on digitizing, imaging and scanning various records and documents, she said.
'We've really utilized the money that my office makes without using taxpayer money to further enhance the office in every which way,' Pimentel said.
While she's enjoyed being recorder, Pimentel said she looks forward to running for auditor to continue to serve Lake County residents.
'I love what I do. I'm happy to be at the county. I'm proud to be an elected official, and it's something that I want to continue because I'm just starting out,' Pimentel said.

Why Ready-to-Eat, Home-Cooked Meals Are the Next Big Thing in Food Delivery: A TiffinStash Perspective

A wholesome Indian thali with nutrients rich sabzis, dals, millets, and handmade rotis — just like the ready-to-eat, homely meals TiffinStash delivers. TORONTO, July 22, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — As food delivery matures into a $75.8 B market in North America—with a CAGR of about 12% through 2033 —consumer priorities are shifting from convenience to authentic, healthy, and comfort of home meals. Toronto's leading tiffin marketplace, TiffinStash believes this signals a pivotal shift: home kitchens, not dark or ghost ones, are poised to define the next wave of food tech. ' TiffinStash isn't just solving a food problem—we're bridging emotional gaps ,' says Krish Shah, Founder & CEO of TiffinStash. ' People miss the comfort of familiar meals made with care. They want something that feels like home, from someone who understands their pace of life and what real food means to them.' A Market Hungry for Homemade North America's online food delivery market reached $38 billion in 2024, projected to grow to $110 billion by 2034, with ethnic and home-style meals emerging as the fastest-growing subcategories according to Future Market Insights. Despite this boom, most consumers still value the comfort of home-cooked meals—something missing from most restaurant-style delivery menus. TiffinStash understands this growing shift in how people want to eat. In response, it became the first platform in Canada to help home-based chefs get licensed and to publicly list verified, hygiene-compliant home kitchens—ensuring safety, dignity, and trust not just for convenience, but communities. Beyond Meal Kits: Authenticity & Culture In the aftermath of COVID, cook-and-eat meal kits surged in popularity as more people stayed home and embraced cooking—making up 61% of the market in 2023 (approx. $12 billion) according to Wikipedia. But as life returns to its usual pace, consumer preferences are rapidly shifting. The ready-to-eat meals segment is now the fastest-growing in North America, projected to reach US $16.39 billion by 2025, growing at an 11.66% CAGR through 2029, according to Statista. TiffinStash caters to this demand by delivering freshly prepared, home-style heat-and-eat meals daily—combining authenticity with everyday convenience. Healthier Choices, Rooted in Tradition As consumers grow more conscious about what they eat, the demand for meals that are both nourishing and culturally familiar is rising. Research from the Harvard School of Public Health shows that home-cooked meals are typically lower in sodium, added sugar, and processed ingredients compared to restaurant or takeout options, contributing to better overall health outcomes. TiffinStash brings that balance to the table—offering a curated range of healthy, protein-rich tiffin meals—both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. From quinoa and tofu to grilled chicken and seasonal sabzis, these healthy meals balance taste and nutrition without the need for calorie counting or compromise. TiffinStash: Reinventing Food Delivery with Home Kitchens Since launch, TiffinStash has redefined tiffin delivery by enabling 60+ licensed seller listings to serve thousands of South Asian meals across the Greater Toronto Area, with 75% of repeat customers. Built without venture capital, the platform runs on a tech-enabled, trust-first model that balances affordability and cultural authenticity. ' We didn't raise venture capital, but we raised something more powerful—trust ,' adds Krish Shah. TiffinStash isn't just delivering tiffin—it's building a movement powered by comfort food, community empowerment, and cultural pride. Netanyahu Speaks Out Against NYC Mayoral Candidate Mamdani

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has spoken out against Zohran Mamdani, referring to the Democratic New York City mayoral candidate's proposed policies as 'nonsense.' During an appearance on the Full Send Podcast—which was filmed on July 8 in Washington, D.C., and premiered on Monday—Netanyahu engaged in a wide-ranging conversation with the right-wing hosts. He mentioned the protests across the U.S. in relation to the Israel-Hamas war, and accused participants of being 'against' Israel and America. It was after this that one of the hosts, Aaron 'Steiny' Steinberg, brought up Mamdani, the Muslim democratic socialist who celebrated a decisive victory after the Democratic mayoral primary in June. 'In New York City, right. Zohran? He's an antisemitic guy in the highest population of Jews,' alleged Steinberg, seemingly referencing how the New York metropolitan area has the largest Jewish population in the United States. Netanyahu responded by labeling Mamdani's proposed policies as 'nonsense' and said the 33-year-old assembly member would likely only serve 'one term' if elected in November. 'A lot of people have been taken in by this nonsense. You want to defund the police? You want to have people go into stores and rob them and be free? You think that really creates a good society?' said Netanyahu. 'Sometimes you have to get mugged by reality to understand how stupid that is.' Mamdani has said he will 'not defund the police.' Addressing that concern during a debate in June, he said: 'I will work with the police because I believe the police have a critical role to play in creating public safety.' He went on to flag the numbers of unsolved crimes from this year alone, saying police need to have the time to 'focus on those crimes' and that the city should have 'mental health professionals and social workers' to address the 'mental health crisis and homelessness.' The Democratic NYC mayoral candidate has also proposed city-run, non-profit grocery stores as part of his "affordability" platform. Read More: Netanyahu at the Crossroads This isn't the first tussle of words exchanged between Netanyahu and Mamdani. In December, Mamdani said, if he were to become the Mayor, then New York City would arrest Netanyahu if he visited. Netanyahu has an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes, which Israel has strongly denied. The U.S. is not a signatory to the ICC. During Netanyahu's visit to the White House in early July, Mamdani's mention of a possible arrest was brought up at a roundtable conversation. Netanyahu said he was 'not concerned' about Mamdani's vow, while President Donald Trump interjected: 'I'll get him out,' referring to the Democratic mayoral candidate. It's thought that Netanyahu may travel to New York in September, prior to the mayoral election, to speak at the U.N. General Assembly's world leaders meeting. Meanwhile, there have been numerous instances of Mamdani being referred to as 'antisemitic' by critics. He has strongly rejected any accusations of antisemitism. 'It pains me to be painted as if I am somehow in opposition to the very Jewish New Yorkers that I know and love and are such a key part of this city,' Mamdani said in June. The mayoral candidate has also vowed to increase spending to tackle hate crimes in New York by 800%. In an interview with NBC after his primary election victory, he said: 'Ultimately, we cannot simply say that antisemitism has no home in this city or no place in this country. We have to do more than talk about it. We have to tackle it, and that's what we will do through this funding and through this commitment, we will root out bigotry across the five boroughs.' Mamdani, who is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has faced criticism from Republicans and some Democrats, also. After Mamdani's victory in the primary, Republican Rep. Mike Lawler of New York said: 'A radical, antisemitic socialist was just nominated to be the Democratic candidate for mayor of New York City—and Kathy Hochul [New York's Governor] didn't lift a finger to stop it from happening.' (Lawler is thought to be mulling over a potential run for New York Governor.) Read More: Islamophobia Surges Online After Zohran Mamdani's Win In the immediate aftermath of Mamdani's primary victory, Islamophobia surged online, research found. Mamdani previously addressed his experience of Islamophobia during his campaign, sharing the impact it has on him. 'I get messages that say 'the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim.' I get threats on my life, on the people that I love,' he said in June. 'I try not to talk about it, because the function of racism, as Toni Morrison said, is distraction.'

Opendoor leads meme stock redux on Wall Street with shares tripling in one week

Opendoor Technologies, a penny stock last week, attracted sudden interest among Reddit-obsessed retail traders, who pushed up the stock price by threefold in days. The online real estate startup saw shares popping more than 22% in premarket trading Tuesday, set to extend a red-hot run powered by retail traders chasing meme stocks. It had surged more than 42% in Monday's session with trading halted multiple times due to volatility. The stock, which had been trading mostly under $1 this year, hit a high of $4.97 during Monday's session and closed the day at $3.21 apiece. Its meteoric rally pushed the stock up by more than 500% in July alone. The ticker $OPEN has been heavily cited on WallStreetBets, the online forum behind the infamous GameStop mania in 2021. It gained traction on the internet partly after hedge fund manager Eric Jackson, an investor in Opendoor, started touting the stock, saying it can reach $82 a share. "HODLTHE($OPEN)DOOR," one post reads. Trading volumes exploded with 1.9 billion of Opendoor shares exchanging hands on Monday, more than 1,700% of the three-month average, according to FactSet. About 22% of Opendoor's available shares are sold short, meaning short-covering could be at play during this run. Short sellers tend to buy back shares to cut their losses when their short target rallies suddenly, and their buying can further push up the stock. Heightened options trading in the name also intensified the rally. Bespoke Investment Group called Opendoor a "poster-child" for the recent wave of options market optimism. "That stock is up 500% in three weeks; total call open interest has tripled over that time period, Bespoke said in a note to clients. "Surges in call buying are driving extreme moves higher for a small slice of the market, even as most other stocks drop." When Opendoor went public through a special purpose acquisition company in 2020, it was riding a SPAC wave and broader gains driven by low interest rates and Covid-era market euphoria. Opendoor's business involved using technology to buy and sell homes, pocketing the gains.
