Malaysian PM urges ASEAN unity to face weaponization of trade

Malaysia Sun3 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Weaponization of international trade must be met with unity among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) grouping in order to weather disruptions and maintain a principled stand on free and open trade, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said here on Wednesday.
In his opening address at the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting, Anwar also urged greater intra-regional trade and cooperation as a long-term strategy to counter the disruptive impact of tariffs imposed by the U.S. administration.
"Across the world, tools once used to generate growth are now wielded to pressure, isolate and contain. Tariffs, export restrictions, and investment barriers have now become the sharpened instruments of geopolitical rivalry. This is no passing storm. It is the new weather of our time," he said.
"As we navigate external pressures, we need to fortify our internal foundations. Trade more among ourselves, invest more in one another, and advance integration across sectors with resolve. To build a stronger, more connected ASEAN economy is a strategic imperative that will anchor our relevance and resilience for decades to come," he added.
Anwar stressed that the grouping must not lose sight of implementing policies that will benefit the citizens of the grouping, particularly in connectivity, food security, digital transformation, education, public health, and climate resilience, all of which will strengthen the bloc while improving lives.
Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said in his opening remarks at the plenary session that ASEAN must work toward greater integration and coordination to combat challenges posed by climate change and other disruptive developments.
"A most urgent imperative is the need for us to address the existential hazards of climate change. We have witnessed, first-hand, the effects of rising temperatures, natural disasters, and extreme weather events in our region and its peoples," he said.
"Geopolitical fault lines have continued to fissure, strategic trust has thinned, and flashpoints have sharpened ... we must continue to invest and place our faith in regionalism and multilateralism. We must continue to champion the principles of justice, fairness, equality, and humanity," he added.
Malaysia was hosting the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related meetings from July 8 to July 11, under its 2025 ASEAN chairmanship theme "Inclusivity and Sustainability."
A total of 24 foreign minister-level meetings will be held, including bilateral discussions with ASEAN's external dialogue partners, namely Australia, Canada, China, the European Union (EU), India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, South Korea, Britain, and the United States.
In addition, four trilateral meetings will be scheduled, involving Malaysia, the ASEAN Secretariat, and sectoral dialogue partners including Brazil, Norway, Switzerland and Trkiye.

PM's meet with BN MPs focused on polices, current issues, says Zambry

JELI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's meeting with Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs last night was to discuss government policies and clarify current issues, says Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir. The BN secretary-general said such meetings are held regularly as BN is a component of the unity government. "As part of the unity government, BN frequently holds discussions, including regular sessions with top leaders not only from BN but also from other coalition partners. "These meetings allow for the exchange of views and for the Prime Minister to provide updates on government policies and related matters," said the Higher Education Minister after officiating at the Jeli Umno delegates meeting in Bukit Nangka here Saturday (July 12). The Prime Minister held the meeting with BN MPs at his official residence in Seri Perdana, Putrajaya, on Friday (July 11). The session, which lasted over an hour, is believed to have also addressed preparations for the upcoming Parliamentary sitting. In his speech at the division meeting, Zambry, who is also an Umno supreme council member, urged party members in Kelantan to continue strengthening their resolve and confidence in advancing the party's mission in the state. "The spirit of relentless struggle must be upheld by all Umno members in Kelantan, as demonstrated during the Nenggiri by-election last year, which BN won. "Our machinery was mobilised and we went to the ground - few expected us to win, but we succeeded through unity and determination," he said. - Bernama

Ahmad's Fried Chicken wants to give choices in local fast food market

Lailatul Sarahjana Mohd Ismail and her husband Mohd Taufik Khairuddin, both 34, had noticed a sudden interest surge in locally-produced products. "I did some product research and development for three months, while Taufik focused on market research and branding. We started with one stall at Mydin Senawang. We had very good response and decided to open a fast-food restaurant. "That's how Ahmad's Fried Chicken came to be. It was in line with our aspiration to create a Malaysian product we can be proud of. We named it after my husband's nickname, given by his father, which also reflects a local identity,' she told Bernama recently. Lailatul Sarahjana, who worked in the banking sector previously, said the transition to the fast-food industry was not easy, but past experience helped significantly in terms of management and automation. To ensure consistent flavour, the couple sought advice from food and beverage (F&B) industry experts and conducted various studies before finalising their fried chicken recipe. Ahmad's Fried Chicken is competitively priced against international brands. "The recipe and flour mix were developed in-house to maintain quality control. The international brands are our main challenge. They have the advantage in terms of supply chains and contract farming,' said Lailatul Sarahjana, who is from Teluk Intan, Perak. She said Ahmad's Fried Chicken operates on a licensing model, with branch opening costs ranging from RM700,000 to RM1 million, depending on size and location. So far, 38 outlets have been established nationwide, including restaurants and mini-restaurants, with a target of 66 outlets by the end of 2025. "We are opening outlets cautiously with a focus on urban areas first because all raw materials, including chicken, must be supplied from our headquarters in Puchong,' she said. Lailatul Sarahjana added that they are actively seeking strategic partners among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to accelerate branch expansion. "We need 10 more SME partners to meet our target for this year. So far, more than 1,000 applications have been received and are currently being evaluated,' she said. On the boycott of international brands, Lailatul Sarahjana said establishing Ahmad's Fried Chicken was not reactionary. Their am was to have a local alternative that could compete in terms of quality. "We are not competing aggressively, but we want to offer choices in terms of taste, portion size, and meals that are tailored to local preferences. The boycott issue might have attracted attention, but in the end, it is the quality that determines success,' she said. On whether Ahmad's Fried Chicken plans to become a franchisor, she said the brand has not reached the required three-year mark. "We are in discussions with Perbadanan Nasional Bhd for guidance currently to set up a franchise. Our goal is to enter international markets such as Saudi Arabia and the United States,' she said. - BERNAMA More Like This

DPM Fadillah to brief GPS, GRS MPs on current national issues

KUCHING: Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof will brief MPs from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) on current national issues, following a recent closed-door meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs. The Deputy Prime Minister said the briefings are important to ensure all MPs in the unity government are well-informed on matters discussed in Cabinet. "For GPS, we have no issue. With our small number of MPs, I can engage with them directly. These matters were discussed in Cabinet, so I know what needs to be clarified. "If the Prime Minister were to meet all MPs individually, time would be limited. I can assist by briefing GPS and GRS MPs," he told reporters after attending the "AI for MY Future" programme at CENTEXS here Saturday (July 12). He was responding to questions on whether GPS MPs were involved in the Prime Minister's meeting at Seri Perdana, Putrajaya, on Friday (July 11). The meeting reportedly addressed current issues, including the upcoming Parliamentary sitting. Fadillah said a full briefing session for GPS and GRS MPs would be held soon. "A retreat involving all unity government MPs, including ministers and deputy ministers, is scheduled for next week. We'll use that platform to provide further explanation," he said. He also confirmed he will be in Sabah on Sunday (July 13) for a meeting of the Technical Committee under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 Implementation Action Council (JKMTPMA63), adding that it does not involve any political agenda. - Bernama
