Viral 102-year-old WWII veteran has message about America: 'How lucky we all are'

A World War II veteran who is 102 years old has become a viral sensation on TikTok, sharing his experiences of wartime stories. Jake Larson, aka "Papa Jake," spoke with Fox News Digital about serving the country and shared what Independence Day means to him. (See the video at the top of this article.) Larson of Lafayette, California, fought in six battles during World War II while storming Omaha Beach on D-Day and then in the Battle of the Bulge. He was born in Owatonna, Minnesota, enlisting in the National Guard in 1938 at age 15 – and lying about his age. "Growing up on a farm during the Depression with no electricity, running water or money has made me appreciate the independence and freedom we have today," Larson said. He was 18 years old when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Larson joked that he "didn't even know Pearl Harbor existed." After Pearl Harbor, Larson spent three years in Europe. "I just came from the infantry. I got in on the planning of D-Day. Not only did I get in on the planning of D-Day ... I landed on Omaha Beach and that night I was put in charge of Omaha Beach," he said. Larson said he was assigned to the night shift for the G3 — and continued this duty through the Battle of the Bulge. On D-Day, he was out in the water up to his chin carrying his rifle over his head. "I've drawn eight rounds, and I'm holding that up over my head, so I wouldn't get the ammunition wet," he said. "But I was more afraid of the small arms fire we were receiving from the shore." He added, "They're shooting at you from the shore, you're walking over landmines. This is unbelievable." He added, "The most unbelievable part of it is I came to six of those events without a scratch." About 66,143 of the 16.4 million Americans who served in World War II were alive as of 2024, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. "At the beginning of World War II, Great Britain and Ireland were full of American soldiers fighting for the entire world's freedom alongside them," said Larson. Author of the book "The Luckiest Man in the World," Larson also spoke of his gratitude toward those who paid the ultimate service to their country. "Their souls are looking down on me now. Every time I talk, I like to remind people that those guys upstairs, looking down at us, they're the heroes," he told Fox News Digital. "I'm just in there doing the job." "I don't think any of us ever thought we'd be heroes. We didn't go over there to be heroes. We went over to kick Hitler's [butt] out of Europe." He added, "And we did it. We did it!" Larson told Fox News Digital the Fourth of July is a special time for him to reflect on family and freedom. "When the Fourth of July comes around each year, I think about how lucky we all are living in this country. In this country, we don't care where you came from — we're all Americans. If you fight for our freedoms in America, you are an American."

I Tested The Viral Salt Frying Method

I make popcorn at least three days a week. It's my go-to morning, afternoon, or before-bed snack, and I've made it every which way: in an air-popper, straight from the bag (hello, Costco-sized family pack!), in a 'whirly pop,' in the microwave, and on the stove. But I've never made it in a pool of now. After seeing a viral TikTok where food content creator Roice Bethel (aka @roicebethel) fries food in salt, I was intrigued. His video racked up over 16 million views, so I knew I had to try it. I love popcorn, I hate frying, and I am always on a quest to make my favorite snacks even better. While it may not be something we see often in North America, a quick Google search taught me that it is a relatively common way of cooking among street vendors and households in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, and Bangladesh (among others!). The science of it makes sense: salt gets hot, distributes heat well, and is an oil-free way of cooking. So why not try it with my favorite snack? First things first: I picked up a box of coarse kosher salt and used some beautiful rainbow corn (fancy, I know). While it was suggested I use a wok, I used my Caraway non-stick pan because there's no way I wanted to scrub a pan if something got stuck. I poured in salt, wondering…how much? All of it? A quarter inch? An entire inch? Unsure and not wanting to waste, I settled on a quarter-inch layer, poured a ¼ cup of kernels into the pan, and thought, now what? After watching a few videos, I decided to crank the heat to (medium) high and wait for the magic to happen, stirring occasionally. In true form, I started tidying my toddler's toys, and kernels began flying. I quickly put a lid on top and heard it popping away. Hey, you! Thankfully, I had a clear lid to use so I could keep an eye on the action. I've made stovetop popcorn since I could reach the stove, and I've always been told that I should shake and shimmy the pan in order to prevent burning, so I moved it a few times every minute or so, getting salt and popcorn kernels all over my stove, floor, and into the mouth of my begging dog. Once all the kernels were popped, I strained the popcorn through a large-holed strainer, watching my salt go down the drain before transferring the popcorn to a bowl for snacking. Upon tasting it, I first noticed it was ever so subtly salted, the perfect level of saltiness for my tastebuds, and smelled oddly like movie theatre popcorn. As I crunched and munched away, I couldn't help but feel like the popcorn wasn't quite as fluffy and light as what my air popper produces. All in all, I don't think I'll add this method to my repertoire of popcorn-making tricks. While it tasted delicious, the texture wasn't what I was expecting from my popcorn, and compared to my air popper, it was more wasteful and time-consuming to get my popcorn fix. I'm curious to try other salt-fried items, but keep in mind you can only do this with dry foods, like popcorn kernels, nuts, or dried beans. Would you try salt frying? Woman Rescues 'Terrified' Dog from Meat Trade—Then His Dreams Come True

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A dog who was rescued from the meat market has been given a second chance at life, and now he's putting those unthinkable horrors in the past. While dog owner Christina Craddick may already have three canines in her home in Los Angeles, California, she couldn't resist adding one more to her tally. After hearing about Norman, a "terrified" dog who was saved from the meat trade two years ago, she knew she had to adopt him and give him the life he deserves. Norman spent much of his life chained up at a Korean meat market where he was only given "sticks to eat." The poor dog is incredibly nervous and gets overstimulated easily, but he's certainly on the mend in his forever home. Craddick often shares videos about Norman (and her other rescue dogs) on TikTok (@christinancraddick). A heartwarming video showing Norman fast asleep in her lap and cuddling up to her has delighted the internet, leading to more than 518,800 views and over 90,700 likes on TikTok at the time of writing. Norman the rescue dog cuddling up to his owner, 2 years after being rescued from the Korean meat market. Norman the rescue dog cuddling up to his owner, 2 years after being rescued from the Korean meat market. @christinancraddick / TikTok The caption alongside the sweet clip reads: "Norman's been THROUGH IT, how could you be mean to this dog?" At present, it's believed that an estimated 2 million dogs a year are reared on meat farms across South Korea. They are predominantly slaughtered by electrocution, which can take up to five minutes to die. But in recent years, the dog meat industry has seen a decline in numbers, with a survey by Gallup Korea suggesting that 70 percent of South Koreans will refuse to eat dog meat in the future. In 2024, South Korea passed a Special Act to cease the breeding, slaughtering and distribution of dogs for consumption. In the six months that followed, 623 dog farms closed down, equating to 40 percent of the total number across the country. It's also expected that 60 percent, or 938 farms, will be closed by the end of 2025. Thankfully, Norman's life was spared, and he is now living his best dream in the U.S. It breaks Craddick's heart to think about what he once experienced, but she's so glad that she could provide him with a loving forever home. Since sharing the sweet clip of him laying beside her, the viral video has generated over 800 comments on TikTok. One comment reads: "He's perfect! Thank you for saving him and giving him a safe place to feel what every dog Another TikTok user wrote: "This literally made me cry. He deserves the world." Another person added: "The fact that dogs can be so hurt, but still just want to be loved will never cease to break my heart." While one commenter replied: "I wish with all my heart that all of them get saved and loved." Newsweek has contacted @christinancraddick via Instagram. We could not verify the details of the video.
