The Los Angeles Lakers could soon lock down their new star player, but the contract might not be what most fans expect. With Luka Doncic now eligible for a huge extension, many are watching to see what kind of deal he signs.
Reports suggest the All-Star might have a smarter long-term plan in mind, one that could change how big NBA stars approach their future deals.
Luka Doncic may take shorter deal with Los Angeles Lakers to aim for massive 2028 payday
On July 8, NBA insider John Hollinger from The Athletic reported that Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic may sign a shorter extension instead of a full four-year deal this summer. Doncic, who was traded to the Lakers earlier this year, becomes eligible for a four-year, $223 million extension on August 2, 2025.

However, because he was traded, Luka cannot sign for a full supermax contract yet. Hollinger noted that it is 'vastly more likely' Doncic will sign a three-year, $161 million deal that includes a player option in the final year. This move would position Doncic to hit 10-year veteran status in summer 2028, making him eligible for a projected five-year, $406 million contract under the 35% max rule.
According to Hollinger, 'If he were to void his player option in 2026 and sign a three-year deal with a 2028-29 player option, he could line himself up for the biggest payday of his career.'

Los Angeles Lakers prefer long-term deal but will accept any contract to keep Luka Doncic on the roster
Luka Doncic is only 26 years old and has a $48.9 million player option for the 2026-27 NBA season. That means Doncic could walk away as a free agent in the summer of 2026 if nothing is signed before then. But people around the league think the Lakers won't let that happen. They're expected to make sure he stays with them through at least 2028.
Even if they don't get the full four-year commitment, the Lakers are reportedly happy to keep Doncic from entering free agency next year.
The Lakers know how important it is to keep Luka Doncic feeling good about his future. They also know that being flexible with money now might help later. Even if Luka signs a shorter deal, they believe it's worth it.
He is one of the best players in the league. Having him in Los Angeles on any kind of deal is a big win. People close to the team say they understand Luka's plan. And they're okay with it, as long as he stays in purple and gold.

WNBA All-Star draft: Caitlin Clark, Napheesa Collier trade coaches

Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier were encouraged to negotiate some trades immediately after their WNBA All-Star draft on Tuesday night. Instead, they swapped their head coaches. WNBA All-Star draft: Caitlin Clark, Napheesa Collier trade coaches Clark, as the leading vote-getter, was assigned Cheryl Reeve, head coach of the WNBA-leading Minnesota Lynx. Collier, Clark's rival captain and the Lynx's star player, was assigned New York Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello. Now, in what appeared to be Clark's initial suggestion, Brondello will coach Team Clark and Reeve will coach Team Collier in the All-Star Game on July 19 in Indianapolis. Clark said on the ESPN broadcast that she and Collier had previously discussed the idea of trading coaches, but that she didn't know if it was in the rules to do so. "I agree with the trade. I love Cheryl, she's my coach here," Collier said. "And you know what, that's just going be worse for Team Clark because now we got more chemistry on our side, we've got more synergy, we know what we expect from each other. So that was a bad move on your part, Caitlin, and we're taking you down." Clark reminded Collier that Brondello is the defending league champion. Brondello's Liberty beat Collier and Reeve's Lynx in the WNBA Finals last fall. There could be more to the trade than reuniting the Minnesota coach and star. In Reeve's role as head coach of Team USA, she decided not to pick Clark for the 2024 Summer Olympics team that went on to win gold. Reeve had previously taken a shot at the WNBA for putting Clark at the center of its national TV strategy, at one point posting a tweet with the hashtags #12teams and #theWismorethanoneplayer. Team Clark's starting five features Aliyah Boston, Sabrina Ionescu, A'ja Wilson and Satou Sabally. Team Collier will have Breanna Stewart, Allisha Gray, Nneka Ogwumike and rookie Paige Bueckers on the floor to start the game. Clark used the first pick of the draft on Fever teammate Boston, ensuring the home fans in Indianapolis will be able to cheer for both on the same team. Clark later spent her first reserve pick on Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell, as well. Collier's first starter selected was Stewart, the two-time MVP and seven-time All-Star. Clark drafted Stewart's Liberty teammate, Ionescu, and Collier added Gray from the Atlanta Dream, leaving Clark to snag three-time MVP Wilson in her seventh All-Star appearance. Collier said she hoped her fellow UConn Huskie Bueckers would still be available at the end of the round as she chose Seattle's Ogwumike next, leaving Clark to tease her for telegraphing her next move. But rather than steal Bueckers, Clark chose Sabally, who is having a career year in her first season with the Mercury. Collier picked Clark's college rival Angel Reese with her team's third pick of the reserves round. As for player trades, Clark and Collier tossed some ideas around but ultimately decided they wanted to stick with the teams they had drafted. The full teams are as follows: Team Clark starters Caitlin Clark Aliyah Boston Sabrina Ionescu A'ja Wilson Satou Sabally Team Clark reserves Kelsey Mitchell Gabby Williams Sonia Citron Kiki Iriafen Jackie Young Kayla Thornton Team Collier starters Napheesa Collier Breanna Stewart Allisha Gray Nneka Ogwumike Paige Bueckers Team Collier reserves Courtney Williams Skylar Diggins Angel Reese Alyssa Thomas Kelsey Plum Rhyne Howard Field Level Media This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Yankees move All-Star infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. from third base back to second

NEW YORK — All-Star infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. is moving back to second base with the New York Yankees in place of DJ LeMahieu, who is heading to the bench. Yankees move All-Star infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. from third base back to second New York also placed reliever Mark Leiter Jr. on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, retroactive to Monday, with a stress fracture in his left leg. Clayton Beeter was recalled from Triple-A, and fellow right-hander Cam Schlittler will be called up Wednesday night to start against Seattle in his major league debut. Chisholm began the season at second, his most natural position after breaking into the big leagues there with Miami five years ago. But he played third for the Yankees last year and had been starting there again since returning in early June from a right oblique strain — after New York third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera broke his left ankle May 12. LeMahieu came off the injured list the following day and, although he has plenty of experience at both spots, has made all 35 of his starts this year at second base. LeMahieu won three Gold Gloves at second with Colorado from 2014-18 — and another one in a utility role with the Yankees in 2022. But he turns 37 on Sunday and his range has been diminished by a series of toe, foot and hip injuries. Chisholm, meanwhile, has made some wild throws from third lately while hampered by a sore shoulder, and New York has been shaky overall on defense at times. 'Obviously, the last week was a little bit of a struggle for him over at third. I think part of that is just being a little banged up and not being able to do some of his prep work that allows him to stay on top of things at third,' manager Aaron Boone said. "But I think just letting his athleticism go in the middle of the diamond is something that serves him and us well.' Chisholm began the day batting .245 with 15 homers, 38 RBIs and an .841 OPS. He was selected to the AL All-Star team Sunday, when he sat out a 6-4 win over the New York Mets that snapped the Yankees' second six-game losing streak since mid-June. He was back at second base for Tuesday night's series opener against the Mariners, with Oswald Peraza starting at third and batting ninth. "Just with what we've gone through here the last week, and again, Jazz not being able to lean into some of the throwing stuff that he would normally do, just felt like it made sense to do this right now,' Boone said. 'He's good with it. ... He's ready to go do his thing there.' The manager called it a 'fluid' situation and was asked what the plan is at third base going forward. 'It's Peraza tonight — and we'll see,' he said. The 25-year-old Peraza can play second, third and shortstop — but he was batting only .154 with three homers, 13 RBIs and a .487 OPS. "I think wherever you put him on the diamond, the defense has been phenomenal. He's a really talented defender," Boone said. "I still think there's that upside and talent in there offensively, too. I mean, he's got pop, he's got athleticism, he can drive the ball the other way with authority. But it has been a struggle offensively when he's gotten the reps.' LeMahieu was hitting .266 with two homers, 12 RBIs and a .674 OPS. The three-time All-Star and two-time batting champion was hitting .310 in his last 31 games since June 1. Boone said the Yankees have no plans to play LeMahieu at third at the moment because 'physically it's a challenge for him right now.' He'll have some sort of role as a right-handed bat off the bench, and Boone was asked how LeMahieu took the news. 'Not great, necessarily. But that's kind of the situation we're in right now,' the manager said. Leiter is 4-6 with a 4.46 ERA and two saves in 41 appearances covering 34 1/3 innings. He said he got injured covering first base June 24 in Cincinnati but had been pitching through the issue until it really became a problem this past weekend. Tests revealed the stress fracture, and there was no timetable yet for the right-hander's return. Luis Gil is expected to throw about 50 pitches and three innings during his first minor league rehab start Sunday. The reigning AL Rookie of the Year has been sidelined since spring training by a right lat strain. This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Karl-Anthony Towns (Image via Imagn) The New York Knicks may be eyeing a late-summer addition to their backcourt as former NBA Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart is rumored to be a potential buyout candidate. With the Washington Wizards focusing on youth, Smart—currently on an expiring $21.6 million deal—might soon become a sought-after free agent, and the Knicks could emerge as a prime destination. Veteran Depth Could Be Key for New York Knicks' Playoff Aspirations The New York Knicks have made several roster upgrades this offseason, focusing on depth as they prepare for what could be a deep playoff push in an unpredictable Eastern Conference. While they've filled out most of the roster, there's still room for experienced guard help—and Marcus Smart could fit that bill. Atticus O'Brien-Pappalardo of noted the Knicks would benefit from the former Celtics guard's presence: Marcus Smart (Image via Getty) 'The Celtics dealt Smart to Memphis as part of a trade to land Kristaps Porzingis , and he has only appeared in 54 games over the last two seasons while battling injuries,' O'Brien-Pappalardo wrote. 'So, while his best days may be behind him, he brings some intriguing talents to the table.' (H/t: Sporting News) Why a Buyout Makes Sense Marcus Smart was traded to the Washington Wizards as part of a broader roster reshuffle that includes veteran names like Khris Middleton and CJ McCollum. However, with the Wizards leaning into a rebuild, it's becoming increasingly likely they'll consider a buyout that frees up Smart to join a contender.
