How AI pales in the face of human intelligence and ingenuity
Gary Marcus is right to point out – as many of us have for years – that just scaling up compute size is not going to solve the problems of generative artificial intelligence (When billion-dollar AIs break down over puzzles a child can do, it's time to rethink the hype, 10 June). But he doesn't address the real reason why a child of seven can solve the Tower of Hanoi puzzle that broke the computers: we're embodied animals and we live in the world.
All living things are born to explore, and we do so with all our senses, from birth. That gives us a model of the world and everything in it. We can infer general truths from a few instances, which no computer can do.
A simple example: to teach a large language model 'cat', you have to show it tens of thousands of individual images of cats – being the way they are, they may be up a tree, in a box, or hiding in a roll of carpet. And even then, if it comes upon a cat playing with a bath plug, it may fail to recognise it as a cat.
A human child can be shown two or three cats, and from interacting with them, it will recognise any cat as a cat, for life.
Apart from anything else, this embodied, evolved intelligence makes us incredibly energy-efficient compared with a computer. The computers that drive an autonomous car use anything upwards of a kilowatt of energy, while a human driver runs on twentysomething watts of renewable power – and we don't need an extra bacon sandwich to remember a new route.
At a time of climate emergency, the vast energy demands of this industry might perhaps lead us to recognise, and value, the extraordinary economy, versatility, plasticity, ingenuity and creativity of human intelligence – qualities that we all have simply by virtue of being alive.Sheila HaymanAdvisory board member, Minderoo Centre for Technology & Democracy, Cambridge University
• It comes as no surprise to me that Apple researchers have found 'fundamental limitations' in cutting-edge artificial intelligence models (Advanced AI suffers 'complete accuracy collapse' in face of complex problems, study finds, 9 June). AI in the form of large reasoning models or large language models (LLMs) are far from being able to 'reason'. This can be simply tested by asking ChatGPT or similar: 'If 9 plus 10 is 18 what is 18 less 10?' The response today was 8. Other times, I've found that it provided no definitive answer.
This highlights that AI does not reason – currently, it is a combination of brute force and logic routines to essentially reduce the brute force approach. A term that should be given more publicity is ANI – artificial narrow intelligence, which describes systems like ChatGPT that are excellent at summarising pertinent information and rewording sentences, but are far from being able to reason.
But note, the more times that LLMs are asked similar questions, the more likely it will provide a more reasonable response. Again, though, this is not reasoning, it is model training.Graham TaylorMona Vale, New South Wales, Australia

Too many organizations treat innovation like an assembly line: Feed ideas in and expect validated solutions out. But that model ignores the messy, emergent nature of creative work. A more useful metaphor: a garden. Ideas sprout and compete for sunlight. Some die off. Others cross-pollinate. Serendipity and timing matter as much as intent. AI acts like a sensor network and irrigation system. It helps you notice overlooked growth and keep things moving. But it's still on you to prune, guide and cultivate. Practical fixes can surface high-impact innovation ideas. To bring better ideas to the surface—not just the loud ones—here's what experienced teams can do: Great ideas often come after the meeting ends. Use structured digital spaces to capture inputs before and after live sessions, especially from quieter team members or those who may prefer contributing in writing in their own language. Good thinking doesn't always show up on schedule, so stop scheduling all of it. Shift from popularity contests to criteria-based evaluations. Combine AI-assisted filtering with human scoring to assess impact, feasibility and alignment. The most-liked idea isn't always the most valuable. Let AI surface clusters, duplicate ideas and emerging trends. Then bring in cross-functional teams to interpret them. AI sees the patterns. You assign the meaning. That's the real collaboration. AI won't replace you, but it might stop you from ignoring the right idea. Innovation will always be human. AI offers leverage, not leadership. Think of it as the most tireless intern you've ever had: fast, context-aware, multilingual and never on vacation. But that intern doesn't know your strategy, your customer or your culture. You do. So maybe the question isn't, 'How do we stop the wrong ideas from rising?' Maybe it's, 'How do we make sure the best ones aren't ignored?' ‘I wanted to do something to fight back': This iPhone app alerts users to nearby ICE sightings
Joshua Aaron has worked in and around the tech industry for around two decades. He built his first app — a blackjack game — at computer camp when he was 13. His newest app is designed for a very different purpose: to let users alert people nearby to sightings of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in their area. Aaron launched the platform, called ICEBlock, in early April after watching President Donald Trump's administration begin its immigration crackdown. The White House's immigration policies have sparked mass protests across the United States; a CNN poll in April showed 52% of Americans polled said Trump has gone too far in deporting undocumented immigrants. ICEBlock currently has more than 20,000 users, many of whom are in Los Angeles, where controversial, large-scale deportation efforts have taken place. 'When I saw what was happening in this country, I wanted to do something to fight back,' Aaron told CNN, adding that the deportation efforts feel, to him, reminiscent of Nazi Germany. 'We're literally watching history repeat itself.' ICEBlock is designed to be an 'early warning system' for users when ICE is operating nearby, Aaron said. Users can add a pin on a map showing where they spotted agents — along with optional notes, like what officers were wearing or what kind of car they were driving. Other users within a five-mile radius will then receive a push alert notifying them of the sighting. Aaron said he hopes those notifications will help people avoid interactions with ICE, noting that he does not want users to interfere with the agency's operations. The app provides a similar warning when users log a sighting: 'Please note that the use of this app is for information and notification purposes only. It is not to be used for the purposes of inciting violence or interfering with law enforcement.' ICE did not respond to a request for comment from CNN about the app or Aaron's characterizations of its actions. ICEBlock doesn't collect personal data, and users are completely anonymous, according to Aaron. It's only available on iOS because Aaron says the app would have to collect information that could ultimately put users at risk to provide the same experience on Android. Reassuring users of those privacy protections will likely be key to growing ICEBlock's user base, given how the government is building a database to aid in its deportation efforts. 'We don't want anybody's device ID, IP address, location,' Aaron said. 'We don't want anything being discoverable. And so, this is 100% anonymous and free for anybody who wants to use it.' Although ICEBlock has no surefire way of guaranteeing the accuracy of user reports, Aaron says he's built safeguards to prevent users from spamming the platform with fake sightings. Users can only report a sighting within five miles of their location, and they can only report once every five minutes. Reports are automatically deleted after four hours. Aaron says he has no plans to monetize the free app but rather wants it to be a service to the community. Aaron's work on ICEBlock stands in contrast to the support that some leaders in Silicon Valley have shown to Trump, including by donating to and attending his inauguration. Some companies have also announced investments in expanding their US presence following the president's push for domestic tech manufacturing. 'I think I would say grow a backbone. You can't just be about the money,' Aaron said when asked what he would say to those tech leaders. 'I understand that you have shareholders to report to. I understand that you have employees that need their paychecks,' he added. 'But at what point do you say, 'Enough is enough'?'
