Muscat – Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has officially opened applications for international undergraduate students for the academic year 2025/2026. The announcement was made by the university's Deanship of Admissions and Registration, with the application window running from Wednesday, July 30 to Sunday, August 17.
This year's admission cycle marks the launch of a new strategic initiative called 'Afaq', designed to broaden access to higher education and support Oman's national development goals under Oman Vision 2040. The programme targets both international students and Omani students seeking academic specialisations not currently offered through the Unified Admission Center.
SQU noted that all applications must be submitted online, and applicants must upload required documents in PDF format only. Incomplete submissions or failure to meet entry requirements will result in disqualification.
Priority will be given to candidates with the highest competitive scores. Additionally, applicants holding non-Omani certificates must submit an equivalency letter from the Ministry of Education. Accepted students will be given a limited period to confirm their offer, after which unconfirmed seats will be forfeited.
The university reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, stating that it reserves the right to reject any application that does not adhere to the guidelines or fails to meet admission standards.

Omani students reconnect with date palm heritage in Mudhaibi

Ibra – A student-led initiative aimed at raising awareness about the cultural and economic importance of the date palm tree was held on Friday in Samad al Shan, in the wilayat of Mudhaibi, North Sharqiyah. Titled 'The Palm Tree: A Heritage Throughout History', the event brought together more than 50 male and female students from a summer programme in Al Suwairij village. Organised by the Citizenship Department of the Ministry of Education, the initiative highlighted the central role of the date palm in Omani society and its significance as a source of livelihood. Subha bint Sulaiman al Hemaili, Senior Educational Researcher at the ministry's Citizenship Department, said the event was designed to instil values of citizenship and preserve the authentic Omani tradition associated with palm cultivation and use. 'The initiative stems from the importance of the date palm tree in Omani society and aims to preserve its history. It educates students about its significance, components, and economic value, and encourages preservation of the professions linked to it,' Subha said. Participants were introduced to the various parts of the palm tree, its different types and varieties, and the traditional industries that depend on it. The programme also explored the tree's connection to Oman's heritage and identity. The students learned about ancient irrigation system – the aflaj – methods of water distribution among farmers, and the sale of water shares. Traditional methods of determining irrigation times, including the use of stars – locally referred to as sawar -were also explained. The event concluded with a session on the seasonal period known as Al Qaidh (summer), during which community activities such as Tanaa al Nakheel, Jadad al Nakheel, and Al Tabsil are observed. These practices remain closely linked with the annual date harvest and continue to be an integral part of rural life in Oman.

An Omani youth-led movement shaping tomorrow's leaders

Five Omani students came together not only as scholarship recipients but also as youth driven by a deep sense of responsibility. They believed the opportunities granted to them by their homeland were a call to give back. Out of this belief, a dream came true, one that would transform their appreciation into a collective movement for national impact. That dream became Bawsala for Emerging Leaders, a growing initiative designed to guide, empower, and inspire young Omanis to become the leaders their country needs. The founders named their initiative 'Bawsala', meaning 'compass', a word that symbolised more than direction. It stood for clarity, purpose and the shared desire to build a future rooted in vision and values. 'Bawsala is a symbol of direction for youth who seek clarity, purpose and a place where their voice can shape real change'. More young Omanis joined the effort, drawn by its authenticity and spirit; and together the team evolved into a vibrant collective driven by hope and determination. The upcoming edition of the intensive leadership programme is scheduled to take place from August 24 to 28, at the Royal Academy of Management. It will feature a series of expert-led workshops focused on leadership, strategic thinking and decision-making. These sessions will be followed by field visits to various national institutions, providing participants with a firsthand understanding of real-world work environments and the challenges faced by different sectors. The programme targets ambitious Omani youth aged between 19 and 25, including university students both inside and outside Oman, as well as recent graduates who completed their studies within the past two years. The structure of Bawsala is built on three interconnected tracks. The first includes workshops led by experts in leadership, innovation and decision-making, focusing on developing the intellectual and behavioural foundations of future leaders. The second track involves field visits to national institutions to expose participants to real work settings and help them understand the day-to-day challenges in various fields. The third and final track centres on personalised mentorship, which is considered a cornerstone of the programme. These one-on-one mentorship sessions will take place throughout September and October. Each participant will be matched with a senior leader from either the public or private sector for three individual and interactive meetings. These sessions will explore strategic topics such as leadership, critical thinking, decision-making and facing real-life challenges. The goal is to connect ambition with experience and to broaden each participant's perspective through guided discussions and professional networking. At the heart of Bawsala lies a commitment to core values such as responsible leadership, strategic vision, innovation and teamwork. The programme is also designed to equip young people not only with knowledge but also with the tools to lead with awareness, adaptability and resilience. The team behind Bawsala understands that the initiative is not a destination but rather a meaningful beginning. It is a space where emerging leaders can grow and contribute to their communities.

RO600,000 invested in 9 playgrounds across North Sharqiyah

Ibra – Authorities in North Sharqiyah are pressing ahead with construction of nine playgrounds across the governorate as part of wider efforts to boost community welfare and recreational infrastructure. Undertaken by Projects Department of North Sharqiyah Municipality, these are being implemented in seven wilayats at a total cost of over RO600,000. Each playground has an estimated cost of RO71,500. Hafez bin Ibrahim al Salmi, Assistant Director General of North Sharqiyah Municipality, said the initiative aims to provide recreational spaces for families and children in residential areas. The facilities are being built with walkways, modern play areas, seating areas and waste bins of approved technical specifications. Two of the playgrounds are located in Mudhaibi, one in the wilayat centre and the other in Samad al Shan. Both are nearly complete, with 95% of work finished. In Dima Wa al Taiyyin, one playground in the wilayat centre is 95% complete, while the second, in Jabal al Abyad's Al Sulayyil area, is in an early phase with just 5% of work done. Each of these playgrounds is 3,038sqm. In Ibra, a 2,887sqm facility is under construction, with progress estimated at 80%. Similar levels of completion are reported for playgrounds in Bidiyah (3,007sqm), Al Qabil (3,038sqm) and Sinaw (3,038sqm). The project in Wadi Bani Khalid, of similar size, has been completed. North Sharqiyah spokesperson Zubaida bint Salem al Shidhani said the playgrounds initiative aligns with the social protection goals of Oman Vision 2040. She added that the playgrounds are intended to serve as accessible recreational outlets for children within neighbourhoods, with safety and modern design at the core of development. She also noted that North Sharqiyah Municipality is currently overseeing more than 118 infrastructure and development projects across the governorate with total investments exceeding RO75mn.
