Christopher Nolan's ‘The Odyssey' Wades Into African Territorial Dispute
(Bloomberg) -- Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan's upcoming movie is sparking controversy in North Africa, with the decision to shoot some scenes in a long-disputed territory incurring the ire of a rebel group fighting for independence. Nolan, who took home two Academy Awards for Oppenheimer in 2024, has chosen to film parts of The Odyssey in the desert landscape near Dakhla, an Atlantic city in Western Sahara. The area was recognized by US President Donald Trump as coming under Moroccan rule in 2020, opening up a wave of investment, development and tourism. Nolan picked a number of global locations for The Odyssey, a $250 million epic starring Matt Damon as the Greek hero Odysseus alongside a host of other stars including Oscar winners Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong'o. But the choice of Dakhla may garner the most attention for Universal Studios Inc. after strong criticism from the Polisario Front, an armed group that claims to be the legitimate representative of the indigenous people of Western Sahara. Polisario, based in Algeria and considered by Morocco as a proxy for its larger neighbor and arch rival, accused The Odyssey's makers of whitewashing colonialism and committing 'a clear violation of international law and ethical standards governing cultural and artistic work.' The group abandoned a long-standing ceasefire in 2020, and has previously warned that continued support for Moroccan rule by the US — later joined by France and Spain — would leave it with no choice but to step up its resistance. That said, attacks to date have mainly targeted Moroccan troops hundreds of miles away near the Algerian border. Neither Universal nor representatives for the filmmakers responded to emailed requests for comment. The filming in Dakhla comes within the context of 'a broader and very concerted Moroccan strategy to leverage its economic, political and cultural influence to try and solidify its claim to the territory,' said Hugh Lovatt, a senior policy fellow for the Middle East and North Africa region at the European Council on Foreign Relations. 'There is a sense that the international community is increasingly aligning behind the Moroccan positions.' The dispute over Western Sahara has caught the attention of Hollywood in the past, with Spanish stars Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz expressing concern about human rights violations against the Sahrawi people in the area. One way for Universal and Nolan to avoid negative publicity would be 'to give a voice and agency to the Sahrawis,' Lovatt said. For Morocco, Nolan's arrival is a boost for its push to promote investment and tourism in a region that it sees as a driver of wealth creation for decades to come. 'This is a production that is extremely important for Morocco,' said Reda Benjelloun, who heads CCM, the Moroccan government agency in charge of promoting the film industry. 'It's the first major Hollywood production to choose the southern provinces,' he added, in reference to the disputed territory. Nolan traveled to Dakhla earlier this month, having already filmed parts of The Odyssey in Morrocan locations in Essaouira, Marrakech and Ouarzazate, as well as countries such as Greece and Scotland. Morocco has long been a favored location for Hollywood, from 1962's Lawrence of Arabia to Ridley Scott's Gladiator series. 'This is extremely important for Morocco and the film industry's development goals,' Benjelloun said in a phone interview. 'It establishes Dakhla in the film ecosystem.' --With assistance from Chris Miller. More stories like this are available on

Bend It Like Beckham Sequel Is In The Works, Confirms Gurinder Chadha
The 2002 sports-drama movie – which starred Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra – is widely credited with inspiring a generation of women to play soccer, and director Gurinder Chadha thinks now is the perfect moment to launch a sequel. The 65-year-old filmmaker told the BBC: 'We've been part of changing the game for women, so it felt like this was a good time for me to go back and investigate the characters." The England women's soccer team have enjoyed significant success in recent years, and are currently preparing to take on Spain in the final of Euro 2025. Gurinder observed that attitudes towards women's soccer have changed since the first movie, but she admits that more progress is still needed. She said: 'A lot has changed since the original movie, but I think that people still don't think that women should play football. 'There are people who still don't take it seriously, although the Lionesses are riding high. 'I've left it a while, but I thought: look at the Euros, look at the Lionesses." Gurinder hopes the sequel will spread a positive message and 'challenge" stereotypes. The director explained: 'What I did was say you can do what you want, and you can have it all, and I think that's a really great message to put out again. I think there's still stuff to say, and stuff to challenge." Bend It Like Beckham proved to be a big moment in Keira Knightley's career, but the actress previously revealed that her friends scoffed at the idea of making the movie. During an appearance on The Tonight Show, Keira told host Jimmy Fallon: 'I literally remember telling people I was doing it and it's called Bend It Like Beckham, and them going, 'Oh that's really embarrassing'. And they were all like, 'Don't worry. Nobody will see it. It's fine.'" The actress noted that 'women's soccer was not as big" in 2002 as it is now, and so her friends assumed that the movie would flop at the box office. She said: 'Women's soccer was not as big back then, and so the idea of the whole thing was sort of ridiculous." Despite this, the film proved its doubters wrong, earning more than $70 million at the box office and even inspiring a musical adaptation of the movie. And Keira – who also starred in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise – is still constantly reminded of her role in the movie by fans.

Inside the Rise of 'Aura Farming': The Coolest Internet Trend Explained
From American Football player Travis Kelce to F1 driver Alex Albon, social media has recently seen many people participating in a trend known as "Aura Farming". This viral trend is all about showing off an effortlessly cool vibe. But many, especially the millennials and boomers, are asking what the trend is all about. 🔥🚨BREAKING: This young man named Dika has taken over the Internet on all platforms for 'legendary aura farming' he can be seen dancing on the front of boat races in Indonesia to boost moral. The viral kid stealing hearts at Pacu Jalur, His dance isn't just moves, it's pure… — Dom Lucre | Breaker of Narratives (@dom_lucre) July 7, 2025 The Story Behind Aura Farming To understand aura farming, one must know what "Aura" is. It is a term often used by Gen Alpha to quantify somebody's 'cool factor'. For example, my friend Ana is cool, as she has a lot of aura. Meanwhile, the term "farming" comes from gaming, where players collect resources or points. Aura farming applies this concept to collecting social admiration. It's like collecting cool points. Aura farming refers to striking a dramatic pose, often in reference to an anime character, to exude epic energy and doing something impressive while acting like it's nothing. The trend is about looking unbothered, confident and charismatic. The trend went viral after a video of Rayyan Arkan Dikha, an 11-year-old sunglass-wearing boy in Indonesia, was spotted doing a cool dance while balancing on the tip of a long racing boat. The internet made him the "ultimate aura farmer" in the eyes of the young generations because of his calm demeanour and fluid hand gestures. "I came up with the dance myself," Dikha told the BBC. "I came up with the dance myself," he added. "It was just spontaneous." "Dancing at the tip of the boat is not easy," Indonesia's minister of culture, Fadli Zon, told reporters at an event earlier this month. "Maintaining balance as a dancer who motivates the Pacu Jalur rowing team is truly not simple. Perhaps that's why children are chosen instead of adults - because it's easier for them to keep balance." The trend has caught the attention of celebrities like Steve Aoki and Wiz Khalifa, who have recreated or referenced Rayyan's dance. Even the Mumbai Police got in on the trend, posting a reel with the caption: "Farming aura since 1935". The trend, however, concerns Dikha's mother, Rani Ridawati, as she told BBC: "The main concern is that he might fall," she said, but added that he was a strong swimmer."
