Al Shaqab Racing's legendary Al Ghadeer (Al Mourtajez x Gharraa) clinched a historic third consecutive victory in the Gr1 Purebred Arabian contest landing the prestigious race for the third year in a row on Wednesday, day two of the Qatar Goodwood Festival..
With this triumph Al Ghadeer confirmed his status as the standard-setter of Purebred Arabian racing with another brilliant performance.
HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, and HE Sheikh Hamad bin Joaan Al Thani received the Qatar International Stakes trophy from HE Saad bin Ali bin Saad Al Kharji, Chairman of Qatar Tourism.
Now a ten-time Gr.1 (PA) winner, the six-year-old followed the same path as last two seasons, winning the Gr.1 (PA) H.H. The Amir Sword in February before heading straight to Goodwood for this target, and once again, he delivered in style for Al Shaqab Racing, trainer François Rohaut and jockey Christophe Soumillon.
With another commanding performance and a tenth Gr.1 (PA) victory under his belt, Al Ghadeer continues to cement his reputation as one of the greatest Purebred Arabians of his generation.
Held up at the back of the field behind Ch'Ezza (Af Albahar), Al Ghadeer travelled with ease while others came under pressure entering the final straight. When he moved up to challenge, Ch'Ezza kicked again and briefly looked away, drifting right in the process. Soumillon, however, stayed composed, allowing Al Ghadeer to rebalance before launching his run.
Once asked, the favourite cruised past and asserted comfortably to win by a length. Ch'Ezza, owned by Abdullah bin Fahad Al Attiyah and ridden by Lukas Delozier, stayed on gamely to claim second place while Djafar (Dahess), representing owner Abubaker Sideek Abdullah Kadoura and partnered by Silvestre De Sousa, took third, finishing further five lengths behind. Both the second and the third are trained by François Rohaut as well, making it a remarkable one-two-three for winning trainer, who dominated the podium in this prestigious Group 1.
Winning trainer said, 'Not as easy as usual. Al Ghadeer is six now, but he's still the best and he showed it today. He'll have a race, probably run the Dragon before the Arc. He was so happy going down to the post. It's better to run him than to train him. He may have three weeks holidays, but no more. Then the Amir Sword. And after, we'll see. Probably it's time for him to retire, maybe. And all the breeders want to see him, and he'll be happy to change, to have a new job.'
Bred by Mohammed Al Najafi, Al Ghadeer is out of Gharraa (Matador 12), a dual Gr.2 (PA) winner over 1900m and 2100m at six, and third in a Gr.1 (PA) over 2000m at the same age. He is a half-brother to Ghurat Al Zaman (Hilal Al Zaman), a Gr.2 (PA) winner over 2000m at five and Gr.3 (PA) winner over 1600m at five.Qatar Goodwood Festival

Wathnan Racing's Fallen Angel reclaims spotlight in Prix Rothschild

Tribune News Network Doha Already a dual Gr.1 winner, Fallen Angel (Too Darn Hot), representing Wathnan Racing, returned to the top level on Sunday at Deauville in France, claiming the Gr.1 Prix Rothschild – Fonds Europeen de l'Élevage over 1600m. Open to fillies and mares aged three and up, the race attracted a competitive field of 13, including the well-supported favourite January (Kingman). Fallen Angel had previously finished a solid third behind Crimson Advocate (Nyquist), who also carries the colours of Wathnan Racing, in the Gr.2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot. A Gr.1 winner at two, and winner of the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas last year at three, she now adds a third Group 1 to her CV, confirming once more her class, courage and value as a top-level performer. Trained in the north of England by Karl Burke for Wathnan Racing, the four-year-old mare was confidently ridden by Daniel Tudhope, producing a determined performance. Fast from the stalls, Fallen Angel led the far-side group in the centre of the track, while Spiritual (Invincible Spirit) took charge of the near-side runners. Both raced at a solid pace, with the favourite January settling in midfield on the near side. The groups merged inside the final 500 metres, with Fallen Angel still travelling strongly in front. As the race built to its climax, January loomed up smoothly, under a confident Christophe Soumillon, and briefly edged ahead inside the final furlong. But Fallen Angel was not done, showing admirable grit, she rallied in the closing strides to regain the advantage inside the final 50 metres, winning by a head. Start Of Day (Night Of Thunder) finished strongly to grab third. After the race, winning jockey Daniel Tudhope, said: 'She's always been tough, you know. I was a bit concerned about the ground, but she handled it fine, it was drying out a bit. I'm pleased to get back on her; she's been a great filly for me and for the team. I'm delighted. I want to thank Wathnan Racing for putting me on her again.' Bred by Branton Court Stud LLP, she is out of Agnes Stewart (Lawman), a Gr.2 winner over 1600m at two. Fallen Angel is a half-sister to Divine Jewel (Frankel), a winner over 2400m at three and runner-up in a Gr.3 over 2800m at four, as well as dual Listed-placed over extended staying trips at four.
