Principals of five colleges under Patna university picked by drawing lots

Time of India5 days ago
PATNA: Five colleges of Patna University (PU) on Wednesday got new principals, not on their merit or suitability but through a lucky draw.
Nagendra Prasad Verma, a history teacher at Chapra's Jai Prakash University, was selected as principal of Magadh Mahila College in Patna through a lottery.
The draw of lots extended to Patna College and Patna Science College, two of Bihar's oldest and most prestigious institutes, which will be now headed, respectively, by Anil Kumar, a chemistry teacher from a UP college, and Alaka Yadav of Hajipur's Mahila College.
Suheli Mehta, a home science teacher at Magadh Mahila College, was 'picked' to head Vanijya Mahavidyalay while Yogendra Kr Varma of Patna Law College became the institution's principal.
All the five incumbents were earlier selected as principals on the recommendations of Bihar State University Service Commission (BSUSC), based on their interviews and academic qualifications. It's after a gap of 15 years that the PU colleges will get principals recommended by the university service commission.
Sr academics raise questions on appointments through lottery
Usually, the appointment of a college principal is done by vice-chancellor of the university concerned.
However, following allegations of foul play in appointment of principals in some universities, governor-cum-chancellor Arif Mohammed Khan ordered that the posting of BSUSC-recommended candidates would be done through a lottery system under the supervision of a three-member committee, headed by the VC of the university concerned.
In the case of five PU colleges, the names were picked through a draw supervised by a committee consisting of VC Ajay Kumar Singh, registrar Shalini and the chancellor's representative, Rahmat Jahan. Some senior academics, however, raised questions over the appointments through lottery. How could a home science teacher manage an institution of commerce, or a chemistry teacher administer an institution specialising in humanities & social sciences, they asked.

Suspension ‘revoked', Kerala University registrar withdraws plea before high court

Kochi: Kerala University registrar K S Anil Kumar has withdrawn his petition in the high court challenging the suspension order issued against him by the vice-chancellor (VC), over the Bharat Mata portrait row. When the matter came up before the bench of Justice D K Singh on Monday, the senior counsel appearing for Anil Kumar sought permission to withdraw the petition, stating that the university syndicate had revoked the suspension and reinstated him to his post. Though the senior counsel for VC defended the syndicate's decision to reinstate Anil Kumar, HC noted that if the VC wished to challenge that decision, it must be done through appropriate legal means. The bench accordingly allowed the withdrawal and dismissed the petition as withdrawn. Anil Kumar was suspended by VC Mohanan Kunnummal on July 2 for allegedly insulting the governor, who is also the university chancellor, during a seminar conducted by the Sree Padmanabha Seva Samiti on June 25 at the university's Senate Hall in Thiruvananthapuram. The event, marking the 50th anniversary of Emergency, had the governor as its chief guest. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Just before the event began, the registrar cancelled the earlier permission for use of the venue, citing violations of university guidelines after the organisers displayed a picture of Bharat Mata on stage. This led to his suspension. In his petition, Anil Kumar submitted that student groups affiliated with various political factions had engaged in a heated exchange and that the display of the picture posed a real risk of violence. He claimed that although he requested the organisers to remove the picture, they refused, and as the situation escalated — with students allegedly pushing and assaulting each other — he felt compelled to revoke permission for the event. At the previous hearing on Friday, HC had directed both the university and VC to file their statements, observing that the two appeared to be speaking in different voices. On Monday, however, the petitioner informed HC of the syndicate's decision and sought leave to withdraw the petition.

TGMDC chairman slams BRS, BJP over comments against Revanth government

Telangana Mineral Development Corporation (TGMDC) Chairman Anil Kumar Eeravathri flayed the Opposition parties, accusing both the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of failing the people of Telangana, particularly the Backward Classes (BC). Speaking to the media at Gandhi Bhavan on Sunday, Mr. Anil Kumar advised BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao not to compare himself with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, stating that KTR cannot match Mr. Reddy in any aspect. 'You need not worry about Mr. Revanth Reddy. I'm enough to debate with you on any issues. Let's meet at the Press Club and discuss everything,' he challenged KTR. The former MLA accused the BRS regime of being responsible for the financial distress of the State. 'Your family has bankrupted Telangana. In some Arab countries, people are stoned in stadiums for such betrayal, and such harsh punishment wouldn't be unjustified,' he said. Training his guns at the new BJP State president N. Ramchander Rao, he questioned the BJP's commitment to BCs. 'There is no social justice in your party. You are from the Open Category (OC), your former president Kishan Reddy is an OC, and your assembly floor leader Maheshwar Reddy is an OC. You talk about BC welfare, but where is the representation?' he questioned. Mr. Anil Kumar also slammed BRS MLC and Telangana Jagruthi president K. Kavitha for her plans to conduct rail roko demanding implementation of 42% reservation for the Backward Classes accusing the BRS that it had not done anything in this regard under their rule.
