UAE athletes from Special Olympics World Winter Games Turin get heroes' welcome
The ceremony was held at the Ski Dubai, Mall of the Emirates, reinforcing the nation's commitment to championing and advancing inclusion in sports.
The UAE delegation, composed of 11 athletes of determination, proudly represented the nation as their largest team to date at the Special Olympics World Winter Games Turin 2025.
Held from March 8-15, the delegation achieved outstanding success, securing an impressive tally of 16 medals, including four gold, five silver, and seven bronze medals.
During their homecoming celebration, the athletes showcased their world-class talent by performing a synchronised skiing and snowboarding run and carrying the UAE Flag and Special Olympics Flag on the snow-covered slopes of Ski Dubai, in front of their families, coaches, senior officials from the UAE Government and Special Olympics UAE, Majid Al Futtaim.
The event was graced by Talal Al Hashemi, National Director of the Special Olympics UAE, Ahmed Galal Ismail, CEO of Majid Al Futtaim Holding, Ignace Lahoud, CEO of Majid Al Futtaim Entertainment, Mohammad El Etri, Managing Director of Operations of Majid Al Futtaim Entertainment, and representatives of Special Olympics UAE.
Hashemi said 'We are incredibly proud of our athletes who represented the UAE with passion, perseverance, and pride at the Special Olympics World Winter Games Turin 2025. Their remarkable achievement of 16 medals is not just a testament to their talent, but also to the power of inclusion and what can be accomplished when individuals of determination are given the opportunity to thrive.
'Our heartfelt thanks go to Majid Al Futtaim and the UAE Winter Sports Federation for their unwavering support in preparing our delegation. This homecoming celebration is a reminder of the progress we are making as a nation towards building a more inclusive sporting community.'

Special Olympics athletes from the US and UK also event marks a significant milestone for inclusive sports in the UAE, especially for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. By leveraging innovative technology and purposefully designed golf environments, the tournament aimed to expand participation and create more accessible sporting competition followed an eight-week national training programme that began in May, made possible through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Special Olympics UAE and Topgolf Dubai. Athletes from across the country participated in structured training and national qualifiers, with 72 individuals ultimately selected to represent the UAE in this international were chosen based on time-based performance metrics, age eligibility, and consistent attendance; each athlete was required to complete at least 80% of the training to the nature of the sport and logistical challenges associated with large in-person gatherings, the tournament utilised Topgolf's advanced technology to facilitate parallel play across multiple levels. This enabled more than 36 athletes to compete simultaneously per floor, allowing for broader inclusion and a more dynamic tournament athletes were registered electronically and evaluated using competition-specific benchmarks. UAE Special Olympics athletes take a shot at region's first Topgolf event to make sports more inclusive
More than 70 Special Olympic athletes in the UAE played with confidence as they competed in the region's first Topgolf tournament for people with development and intellectual disabilities. The athletes took part in the Special Olympics Topgolf Invitational Tournament in Dubai on Saturday after two months of training with coaches and trainers as part of an effort to make all sports more inclusive. The athletes took on other Special Olympics athletes at Topgolf venues in the US and the UK in a one-day competition. It was a day of excitement for the 72 athletes, all beginners in a sport that is not easily accessible to people with special needs. Emirati national Salma Al Salami, 21, described it as a 'great' feeling. 'I have been practising regularly and improving, now I really understand the game,' she said. 'In the beginning, I didn't know how to play but now I can.' The training helped her learn to control her swing and guide the ball to the target. 'It made me happy and I'm proud to represent the UAE,' said Ms Salami, who also runs, plays table tennis and represented the UAE in snowshoeing at the Special Olympics World Games in Turin in March. More than 90 UAE Special Olympics athletes including Emirati citizens and various nationalities who live in the UAE were part of the national training programme that began in May. They learnt the basics from gripping a club, taking a swing, playing strokes and were supported with training and coaching twice a week at Topgolf Dubai. Indian athlete Dinal Ekanayake, 19, said he enjoyed the energy of the sport. 'It was amazing, I loved every moment. There's a lot of great athletes here,' said Mr Ekanayake who also enjoys riding, tennis, cycling, swimming and basketball. 'I feel very happy here. I learnt how to swing from my coach.' Making golf accessible Watching the Special Olympics athletes play with fluidity and interact with others was heartening for Amr Badawi, head of sports and training for Special Olympics UAE. 'Usually it's hard to introduce golf to our Special Olympics athletes because of the nature of this sport and vast golf grounds,' he said. 'In Special Olympics UAE we have a limited number of maybe five athletes in golf. Now after impactful training we have 70 athletes and that's great.' Unlike traditional golf, Topgolf is played throughout the year. Microchips in the golf balls track the distance and accuracy of athletes who are required to hit targets scattered over multiple floors. 'With these vertical playgrounds, you can have 36 players on each floor so we had about 100 athletes playing in the same place for one hour. This was huge access for our athletes,' Mr Badawi said. 'They got technical support that gave them fundamental skills. But there is the other side of the story, which is building relationships, friendships and feeling part of the community. It was amazing to see their smiles and interaction with the Topgolf team and the golf academy members as friends.' Dubai launches ‘Mallathon' to turn malls into summer fitness hubs

The month-long programme, which runs daily from 7am to 10am from August 1 to 31, aims to make fitness more accessible to residents by leveraging the climate-controlled environments of Dubai's largest malls. Seven malls will participate, including Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Hills Mall, Deira City Centre, City Centre Mirdif, Dubai Marina Mall, and Springs Souk. 'With the Dubai Mallathon, we're turning familiar spaces into places that inspire movement, connection, and better habits,' Sheikh Hamdan said. 'This is a shared journey. We are all partners in transforming our city into the world's best place to live, work, and visit.' Public health push through Mallathon The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to promote well-being and healthier lifestyles under the Dubai Social Agenda 33 and Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 33. It also aligns with the national 'Year of Community' campaign. Backed by the Ministry of Defence and organised in cooperation with the Dubai Sports Council, the Dubai Mallathon targets all age groups and segments of society, including children, senior citizens, and mall employees. Participation is free, with registration open at Registered participants receive a digital card and gain access to daily fitness activities, including stretching sessions, children's zones, and health-awareness stations. Fitness-tracking tools will also be integrated to encourage consistency. Using existing infrastructure The programme also addresses the challenge of exercising in the extreme summer heat by repurposing underused mall space. Officials say it is a practical, low-barrier solution for maintaining physical activity year-round. 'Dubai seeks to set new global benchmarks in wellbeing by making fitness an integral part of daily life,' Sheikh Hamdan said, adding that the initiative reflects the city's strategy to place people and families at the centre of development plans. Retail collaboration To support lifestyle change beyond exercise, Mallathon will feature collaborations with restaurants and retail outlets that offer health-conscious deals and products to participants, promoting better nutrition and long-term wellness habits.
