Singapore's SMRT says power distribution system fault may have led to Bukit Panjang LRT disruption
SINGAPORE, July 5 — A fault in a power monitoring and control system may have caused the power trip that disrupted Bukit Panjang LRT (BPLRT) services for nearly three hours on July 3. The Straits Times reported that SMRT Trains president Lam Sheau Kai said in a Facebook post on July 4 that preliminary investigations found the power trip could be linked to the Power Scada system. 'We will continue to closely monitor the system as the renewal works progress,' said Lam. The Power Scada system monitors and controls power distribution across the LRT line and is intended to enhance safety and reliability of operations. Lam said the system developed a fault that affected the Emergency Trip System (ETS) and caused traction power on the LRT line to trip. The Power Scada system is part of the BPLRT Power Renewal Project, which is targeted for completion by the end of 2026. The project also includes replacing power rails, upgrading the signalling system and replacing first-generation trains. Lam said SMRT and the Land Transport Authority are investigating the incident and will conduct a comprehensive design review to improve network stability. 'On behalf of the BPLRT renewal project team, we apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank commuters for their patience and understanding,' he added. The July 3 power fault disrupted train services across all BPLRT stations from about 8.50am, with services progressively resuming from 11.30am. Lam said five trains were stalled between stations while seven trains were stationary at platforms during the disruption. He said SMRT employees guided commuters from the stalled trains on the track to the nearest station. Lam said SMRT bypassed the ETS to restore traction power, allowing services to resume. He added that additional staff were deployed to man all stations for the rest of the day as a safety measure.

Malaysia ranks 13th in Global Peace Index 2024, score unchanged despite drop from 10th place
TAWAU, July 5 — Malaysia has been ranked 13th in the Global Peace Index (GPI) this year, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said. He said that, although Malaysia's position changed from 10th place last year to 13th this year, the country's overall score remained at the same level. He also noted that Malaysia was ranked 19th in 2023. 'There are countries, including those in Scandinavia, which have improved their scores on two indicators, particularly in areas such as peacekeeping expenditure. These countries have now surpassed us in the rankings, even though our score has remained the same, because their performance has improved,' he said. 'This GPI takes into account dozens of indicators, and when compared with 165 countries worldwide, we are clearly on the right track. It is important for us to maintain this momentum of peace, and make the most of the GPI indicators,' he told reporters, after officiating the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) Kampung Angkat Madani (Madani adopted village initiative), in Kampung Inderasabah, here, yesterday. A check on the website confirmed that Malaysia recorded a GPI score of 1.469, placing it 13th out of 163 countries. According to Saifuddin Nasution, one of the efforts to further improve Malaysia's GPI ranking is to attract more tourists to the country. He said that the Home Ministry has implemented various initiatives, including briefing sessions and security review programmes with foreign diplomats. 'The ministry has brought diplomats from high-potential countries, such as the United States and those in Europe, to the east coast of Sabah, so that they can see the situation for themselves, and encourage their citizens to visit Malaysia,' he said, adding that the programme has had a positive impact on boosting tourist arrivals to the east coast of Sabah. — Bernama

AirAsia signs RM51b deal for 50 Airbus planes, with option for 20 more, eyes first European route this year
KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 — AirAsia has signed an agreement to buy US$12.25 billion (RM51.72 billion) worth of long-range Airbus 321XLR aircraft, with deliveries confirmed by 2028, said Capital A Bhd chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes. He said the low-cost carrier inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Airbus in Paris today for 50 A321XLRs with rights for 20 A321XLRs, the new fleet of which are targeted to serve Central Asia, the Middle East and Europe, among others. 'This will probably make us one of the largest users of the XLR aircraft, the 321XLR, and is really the next stage of our transformative growth in terms of creating the world's first low-cost multihub network carrier. 'This will enable us to fly to Europe, and we're hoping to launch our first European flight this year,' he said during Capital A's virtual media briefing on Friday, in conjunction with the agreement signing ceremony. The agreement was signed between Fernandes and Airbus Commercial Aircraft chief executive officer Christian Scherer, witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Fernandes said the next-generation A321XLRs will operate alongside AirAsia's all-Airbus fleet of A320 Family and A330 aircraft, and aims to carry 150 million guests annually by 2030, reaching a cumulative total of 1.5 billion guests since inception. He said AirAsia plans to finance the aircraft order through bank leases. Fernandes also confirmed that the group is set to announce another aircraft order next month, but declined to provide further details. Meanwhile, he said the group is working to issue its first bond by October this year. 'This is the first time in our history that we've been rated by international credit rating agencies,' he noted. 'As interest rates begin to moderate, which I'm hopeful will happen soon, it's only natural for us to return to our traditional model of owning aircraft. 'Previously, we shifted from the financing markets to operating leases due to high interest rates and strong capital availability in the leasing space. We're now reassessing that strategy,' he said. On Capital A's proposed regularisation and restructuring plan, Fernandes said the company is expecting to resubmit the decision letter to Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission within the next week or two. 'Once we dispose of the aviation business, Capital A will effectively exit Practice Note 17 (PN17),' he said. He added that six of the group's non-airline businesses, namely Asia Digital Engineering (ADE), Teleport, AirAsia MOVE, OTA, BigPay, Santan, and AirAsia Brand Co (ABC) are currently exploring the possibility of a dual listing in Hong Kong. As for Capital A, it is also considering a dual listing and independent capital raising. However, Fernandes said 'the AirAsia Group itself will not be listed in Malaysia'. — Bernama
