Merkel was attending an event to promote the Greek edition of her memoir 'Freedom' when she recalled an incident from March 2017.
At a meeting with Donald Trump in the Oval Office, he refused to shake hands with her, an incident that took place off-camera, outside the main room.
"I made the mistake of saying, 'Donald, we should shake hands,' and he didn't. He wanted to draw attention to himself. That's what he wants: to distract and have everyone look at him,' Merkel said.
"You can see this in what he is doing with the tariffs. Ultimately, he must deliver good results for the American people.
He has to prove his abilities, at least to his own country,' she added.
She went on to urge the European Union to stand up to Trump's tariff threats and not be intimidated.
'Europeans must stand united and not be intimidated when Trump imposes more tariffs on the bloc, but we should retaliate with tariffs of our own.'
"I'm not saying we should break off relations with the US, but we must negotiate. Even the US cannot survive alone,' Merkel said, adding: 'I see a problematic development.

Describing this often-strained equation, she wrote about Trump in her memoir: 'He judged everything from the perspective of the property entrepreneur he had been before politics. Each property could only be allocated once. If he didn't get it, someone else did. That was also how he looked at the world.

White House To Host UFC Fight: Inside Trump's 250th Independence Day Plans
As a part of celebrations to mark 250 years of American independence, next year, the White House will host a UFC bout, US President Donald Trump announced at a rally in Iowa on Thursday. "Every one of our national park battlefields and historic sites are going to have special events in honor of 'America250' and I even think we're going to have a UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) fight," Trump said on the eve of the Fourth July holiday. He said the event will boast an audience of 20,000-25,000. Nvidia was on track to become the most valuable company in history on Thursday, with the chipmaker's market capitalization reaching $3.92 trillion as Wall Street doubled down on optimism about AI. Shares of the leading designer of high-end AI chips were up 2.2% at $160.6 in morning trading, giving the company a higher market capitalization than Apple 's record closing value of $3.915 trillion on December 26, 2024. Nvidia's newest chips have made gains in training the largest artificial-intelligence models, fueling demand for products by the Santa Clara, California, tech company. Microsoft is currently the second-most valuable company on Wall Street, with a market capitalization of $3.7 trillion as its shares rose 1.4% on $498. Apple rose 0.5%, giving it a stock market value of $3.19 trillion, in third place.
