Iran's Khamenei makes first public appearance since start of war with Israel
The video carried by state media showed dozens attending a ceremony to mark Ashura, the holiest day of the Shi'ite Muslim calendar, standing chanting as Khamenei entered a hall where many government functions are held.
For apparent security reasons, Khamenei had issued pre-taped messages during the war which started on June 13, and avoided public appearances.
On June 26, in pre-recorded remarks aired on state television, Khamenei promised that Iran would not surrender despite US President Donald Trump's calls. — Reuters

Netanyahu meets Israel president on Gaza, Arab ties before US trip
JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met the country's president on Sunday ahead of his visit to Washington, with talks focusing on the Gaza war and efforts to expand ties with Arab states, the presidency said. Netanyahu is expected at the White House on Monday for talks with US President Donald Trump, who is pushing to end the 21-month war between Israel and Palestinian group Hamas. Indirect negotiations were set to resume Sunday in Doha, mediated by Qatar, Egypt and the United States. 'In his visit to Washington, the prime minister carries with him an important mission -- advancing a deal to bring all our hostages home,' President Isaac Herzog said in a statement. 'This is a supreme moral duty. I fully support these efforts, even when they involve difficult, complex and painful decisions. We must all remember that the cost is not simple,' he added. Two Palestinian sources close to the discussions told AFP the proposal included a 60-day truce, during which Hamas would release 10 living hostages and several bodies in exchange for Palestinians detained by Israel. Some in Israel have called for an agreement that would see all hostages released in a single exchange. Netanyahu and Herzog -- whose role is largely ceremonial -- also discussed the prospect of expanding the US-brokered Abaraham Accords of 2020, which saw Israel normalise relations with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco. 'The two discussed opportunities to deepen ties with additional countries, in the spirit of US President Donald Trump's Abraham Accords initiative,' said the statement from Herzog's office. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has recently said his government was 'interested' in normalising ties with neighbouring Lebanon and Syria, with Damascus saying such a move was 'premature'. – AFP

Switzerland reopens embassy in Tehran
GENEVA: Switzerland said on Sunday it was reopening its embassy in Tehran, which was closed last month amid an air war with Israel, and will resume representing US interests in the country. As of Sunday, the embassy is 'again open having temporarily been closed on June 20 owing to the instability of the situation in the country,' the Swiss foreign ministry said in a statement. Ambassador Nadine Olivieri Lozano and a small team returned to Tehran overland on Saturday via Azerbaijan and the embassy will gradually resume operations, the statement went on. 'Having now returned to Tehran, Switzerland is once again in a position to fulfil its role as a protecting power for US interests in Iran.' In the absence of diplomatic or consular relations between the United States and Iran, Switzerland, acting through its Tehran embassy, has officially represented US interests in Iran since 1980. Tehran and Washington have already held five rounds of talks on Iran's nuclear programme since April 12. A sixth session, initially slated for June 15 and mediated by Oman, was cancelled after the outbreak of war sparked by an Israeli attack on Iran two days earlier. Saying it wanted to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, Israel last month carried out strikes against Iranian nuclear sites, killing several senior military officers as well as scientists involved in their nuclear programme. US President Donald Trump ordered airstrikes targeting three nuclear facilities in central Iran on the night of June 21-22. Tehran, which has denied wishing to acquire nuclear weapons, carried out retaliatory strikes against Israel before a ceasefire came into effect on June 24. – AFP

Two Iran Guards killed clearing explosives after Israel war
TEHRAN: Two members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards were killed Sunday while attempting to defuse explosives in an area of the country's west hit by Israeli strikes last month, Iranian media reported. Israel and Iran fought a 12-day war sparked by an Israeli bombing campaign on June 13. The strikes, according to Israel, were aimed at preventing the Islamic republic from developing a nuclear weapon -- an ambition Tehran has consistently denied. Tasnim news agency, citing a statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said that 'two members of the Guards were killed Sunday in Khorramabad while clearing the area of explosives left by the Zionist regime's aggression.' The Israeli strikes during the war killed key commanders of Iran's armed forces, including Guards, as well as top nuclear scientists. The strikes killed more than 900 people across Iran, its judiciary has said, while retaliatory Iranian missile barrages killed at least 28 people in Israel, according to official figures. A ceasefire between the two arch-foes took effect on June 24. Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday made his first public appearance since the war broke out, state media reported, taking part in a religious ceremony in Tehran. Iran announced the reopening of its airspace on Thursday, including over Tehran, which had been closed since the first day of the war. – AFP
