Buffalo Harbor Cruises set to launch 54th season this weekend
Operating since 1971, the company offers two-hour cruises along Buffalo's Harbor, a seasonal favorite for locals and visitors alike.
'When we first show up to our summer dock, people come up. They are so happy to see us like we're the spring robin, like summer is finally here,' said Ryan Hayhurst, the president of Buffalo Harbor Cruises.
The first cruise of the season is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. It's the popular 'Rolling on the River' tour, a history focused cruise that features visual displays comparing Buffalo's waterfront past and present.
'We've got a bunch of photos we put down in the middle of our dance floor area on buffet tables so they can get a visual aid as to what it looked like then as opposed to what it is now,' Hayhurst explained.
New season brings new fun to Blueberry Treehouse Farm
While the history cruise runs every Saturday, the cruise line offers a wide range of themed experiences from sightseeing and happy hour trips to live music cruises. A new addition this year is already generating buzz, a Taylor Swift-themed cruise.
'It's on July 13, which I hear is her birthday, and it's our first one,' Hayhurst said. 'We're going to have a DJ and it's going to revolve around all of her music. We'll have 'Swifty' bracelets, a selfie station, and other giveaways. You can buy regular tickets or a VIP pass that gets you on board early. The snack bar will even have mocktails inspired by Taylor Swift.'
Hayhurst, who grew up working on the boats, said the best part of the job is seeing the excitement of passengers, especially the younger ones.
'My favorite is just the kids. Right now, we're in field trip season, which is insanity but it's great,' he said. 'You get a boatload of fifth graders, 150 of them all fired up and having a ball. They go home and tell their families and friends. I think that's a big part of what we do.'
Tickets for Buffalo Harbor Cruises are available now. More information on schedules, cruise types, and booking options can be found by clicking here.

River and Sky Music festival returns with over 40 bands
The River and Sky Music Festival returns to Fisher's Paradise along the banks of the Sturgeon River, in Field, West Nipissing. From Thursday July 24 to Sunday July 27, expect to see live music from over 40 bands and DJ's, art installations, artisan vendors, and workshops on various topics. Camping is available in both the field and forest areas of the property and trailers and RV's will pay a fee, depending on the size, organizers noted. Campers can also take centre stage at the inaugural River & Sky Rise & Shine Open Mic, Sunday morning starting at 10:30 am at the Coffeehouse Stage, organizers detailed in a release. Musical headliners include Descartes a Kant on Thursday, Tia Wood on Friday, Preoccupations on Saturday, and By Divine Right take the main stage on Sunday. There are many more acts throughout the weekend, and the full lineup is listed on the River and Sky website . Lara Bradley, one of the festival organizers, noted, 'Five groups will be creating arts installations throughout the festival grounds including Studio Nude Beach, David Chops, Allison Roberts, Amanda Mathias leading the creation of an Anishinaabe Mural, and the live light art of The Oscillitarium.' Bradley continued, 'River and Sky Music will host a powerful new community mural project that will unfold live during this year's festival, honouring Indigenous art, design, and storytelling through collaborative creation.' Led by Amanda Mathias, a local artist residing in North Bay, 'This mural will tell a living story inviting people to come together and learn from one another. Festival-goers will be invited to contribute to the mural throughout the weekend, working alongside local Indigenous artists to bring the design to life.' As for The Oscillitarium installation, Bradley explained, 'The Oscillitarium's performances are conjured in real time, utilizing slide film, painted glass, video feedback, VCR tragedies, and liquid manipulation through a cascading array of analog and digital projectors, culminating in mixed media buffets.' More than 20 workshops await throughout the weekend, with sessions running the gambit from living off grid, creating edible potions, and an introduction to eco-printing. The North Bay Astronomy Club will also have a booth on site on Friday and Saturday. David Briggs is a Local Journalism Initiative reporter who works out of BayToday, a publication of Village Media. 9 of the most devious fantasy football punishment ideas for your 2025 league
In fantasy football, your job is to do one thing, as the late Al Davis said: Just win, baby. Because of pride and -- most times -- there's a monetary prize that usually comes with it. There's other stuff to perfect that makes it fun, like picking that perfect team name. But there's also another thing to remember in so many leagues: DO. NOT. FINISH. LAST. There's a lot of shame that comes with it. But in many leagues, there are punishments for last place, many of them very humiliating that are shared on social media. So it's a good time to round up some ideas you might need to use in your fantasy football league for that last-place penalty. Let's run through a few examples: 1. Wear an opposing team's jersey to a game or event This this is brutal. At least the sign lets you know what the deal is. 2. Audition for something professional that you are terrible in The more embarrassing, the better. 3. Sing a song in a random place with lots of people Not the worst, to be honest. 4. Sit in one place and drink/eat for 24 hours This has become classic and almost a little stale. Still makes for good content. 5. Cross a body of water in a raft built from scratch 6. Go on a "date" with a stuffed animal Remember the Winnie the Pooh punishment? 7. Wear the Sign of Shame An absolute classic. 8. Take the SATs I always hated this one the most, because I hate standardized testing. 9. Buy a billboard to declare you stink at fantasy football From WIVB: One Western New York fantasy football league took last place punishments to a whole new level by bringing a public billboard sign to North Buffalo calling out this year's worst player. When driving on Elmwood Avenue heading towards Kenmore, a sign can now be seen boldly declaring that 'Josh sucks at fantasy.'
