NFL insider questions if Sam Darnold can replicate last year's success

USA Today8 hours ago
Sam Darnold's 2024 season was one of the biggest surprises in the NFL. Many had thought his career was over and he had started his last game in the NFL in New York. JJ Mccarthy going down in the preseason for the Minnesota Vikings and missing the whole campaign provided Sam Darnold a great opportunity. He made the most of it, having an MVP-level season.
The season he had last year was enough to convince the Seattle Seahawks to not pay Geno Smith and sign Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million contract this offseason. His play may have been enough to convince the Seahawks, but he hasn't convinced everyone that he can be last year's version of himself in another city.
Sam Monson, NFL insider for the 33rd team, gave his thoughts on this topic highlighted in a Seattle Sports piece.
'The first 16 games of last season, Sam Darnold was (at a) Pro Bowl, borderline All-Pro level of play – a genuinely fantastic, completely different player from anything we'd seen in his NFL career thus far,' Monson said. 'And then the final two weeks was a complete and total disintegration and it was all the way back to Sam Darnold seeing ghosts. So we could see anything (this) year. We could see him back up to the Pro Bowl/All-Pro-level Darnold. We could see him go completely in the tank again and be back to being the New York Jets' top pick that was ultimately cast aside and became a journeyman. Or really anything in the middle – inconsistent play week to week, or just a sort of middle ground where he's good but not great.'
The Seattle Seahawks present a totally different environment for Sam Darnold. He is not walking into a situation with the same luxuries he had last season in Minnesota. Several factors will influence which version of Sam Darnold we will get this season.
One magical season could be all Darnold needed to reach what he was expected to be when he arrived in the NFL from USC. The talent has never been a question for Sam Darnold; he had been a victim of his environments in New York and Carolina. He finally found a great spot in Minnesota, but now he has left that comfort zone.
Last season we saw how good he can be when he has all the pieces to be successful. The Seahawks are hoping they have enough to get last year's version of Darnold.

Former Notre Dame defensive end Ade Ogundeji retires from NFL

Former Notre Dame defensive end Ade Ogundeji has announced his retirement from the NFL. The news comes just ahead of training camps opening for teams this week. Ogundeji was unable to land a contract for the 2025 season and had struggled to find playing time amid injuries. A fifth-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2021 NFL Draft, Ogundeji played in all 16 games of his rookie season, when he recorded 33 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. The following year, he had 42 tackles, two sacks and a blocked kick. But he did not record a stat in 2023 and played in just three games with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024 before being released last October. Ogundeji played for the Fighting Irish from 2016 to 2020 and was a team captain in his final season in South Bend. During his career at ND, he had 80 tackles and 13 sacks. Detroit Lions DL Levi Onwuzurike out for season after ACL surgery, setback for team with ailing Alim McNeill

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Detroit Lions defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike is out for the season after having knee surgery, a setback for a franchise that was counting on him to fill in for Alim McNeill. Lions coach Dan Campbell made the announcement Sunday morning, hours before his team had its first training camp practice of the year. The 27-year-old Onwuzurike started in a career-high 11 games last season, including Detroit's loss to Washington in the divisional round. His playing time increased when McNeill had a season-ending knee injury in December. McNeill, who signed a $97 million, four-year contract extension last October, is out indefinitely. Onwuzurike's injury gives rookie defensive tackle Tyleik Williams a chance to play a significant role when the two-time defending NFC North champions kick off the season Sept. 7 at Green Bay. 'Losing Levi, that hurts, but it helps that we got Tyleik,' Campbell said. The Lions will play in the league's first preseason game July 31 against the Los Angeles Chargers in Canton, Ohio. Detroit selected Williams, a former Ohio State standout, with the 28th pick overall in the NFL draft. The 6-foot-3, 334-pound Williams started 13 games for the national champion Buckeyes and had 46 tackles, including eight for losses and 2 1/2 sacks. The Lions also will lean on 31-year-old defensive tackle DJ Reader and newly acquired veteran Roy Lopez, who started 16 games last season for Arizona and has 50 career starts with the Cardinals and Houston Texans. 'I like what we've got in that room,' Campbell said. 'We've got an opportunity for a lot of guys. We just have to get the best unit that we can to come out of this, and then we have to weather any storm until we get reinforcements because reinforcements are coming, at least we know that.' Detroit's injury report on the defensive line also lists Mekhi Wingo, who had a season-ending knee injury, and Josh Paschal, who had shoulder surgery. The team also held edge rusher Al-Quadin Muhammad out of its first practice. 'Feel good about getting Paschal back here at some point before the season,' Campbell said. The Lions are encouraged by Aidan Hutchinson's comeback from surgery he had last season after breaking his left leg in two places, ending his third NFL season with 7 1/2 sacks in five games. Hutchinson appeared to fully participate in practice on Sunday, wearing a black sleeve to support much of his left leg. 'It's hard to differentiate from any other time I've seen because he's so fluid and he's just such a beast,' said defensive end Marcus Davenport, who was limited to two games last season because of torn triceps. 'He looks good to you, like he's back.'

Trump calls for Washington Commanders, Cleveland Guardians to revert to previous names

President Donald Trump wants the NFL's Washington Commanders and MLB's Cleveland Guardians to revert to their previous team names. 'The Washington 'Whatever's' should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a big clamoring for this,' Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Sunday. 'Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past. Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them.' Advertisement Trump also told the team owners to 'GET IT DONE!!!' Cleveland Guardians team president Chris Antonetti said the club is focused on its future rather than talk of its past nickname. 'Not something I'm tracking or paying a lot of attention to, but I would say generally, I understand there are very different perspectives on the decision we made a few years ago,' Antonetti said Sunday when asked about Trump's post. 'But it's a decision we made and we've gotten the opportunity to build the brand as the Guardians over the last four years and we're excited about the future that's in front of us.' The Commanders did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump's post. Both the Commanders and the Guardians began exploring name changes in 2020, in the wake of widespread protests over racial injustice that occurred around the United States following the death of George Floyd. At the time, Trump opposed the idea and said on Twitter that the franchises were considering changing their names to be politically correct. Retailers and corporations, including Walmart, Target, Nike and FedEx, which then owned Washington's stadium naming rights, urged the NFL team to change its name from the Redskins, which had been decried as a racist slur. Some companies even pulled merchandise with the team name off their shelves. Loud factions of Washington's fan base, particularly those around for the Super Bowl-winning era starting in 1982, criticized the team's decision to drop the former nickname. The team came up with a temporary stopgap, calling itself the Washington Football Team for two seasons. Following a nearly two-year rebranding process, Washington landed on Commanders ahead of the 2022 season. The name wasn't a hit, but more people inside and outside team headquarters began embracing the nickname when Washington went 12-5 last season and won two playoff games on the road before losing at Philadelphia in the NFC championship. Advertisement Team owner Josh Harris said in February that the polarizing nickname would remain in place. 'I think it's now being embraced by our team, by our culture, by our coaching staff,' Harris said. 'So, we're going with that.' In Cleveland, the club decided to explore name change possibilities in July 2020. That winter, team owner Paul Dolan said the decision came after months of 'discussions with fans, business leaders, players, social activists and researchers focused on Native American culture and issues' that led him to realize the name was no longer acceptable. Cleveland did not adopt an interim name like Washington did in 2020, and continued to play as the Indians in 2021. The franchise was a charter member of the American League, one of eight teams to break ground with the new league in 1901. The team initially went by the Bluebirds (often shortened to Blues), then the Broncos and then the Naps before switching to the Indians in 1915. In 2019, Cleveland dropped its Chief Wahoo logo, which had been the subject of annual Opening Day protests outside the ballpark. The club replaced the logo with a guitar-themed All-Star Game patch on its uniforms, a nod to the fact it hosted that season's All-Star Game and that the city is the site of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In July 2021, the club announced its new nickname, the Guardians, which was inspired by a pair of stone sculptures, known as the Guardians of Traffic, along the Hope Memorial Bridge near the ballpark. The team also debuted a 'Diamond C' logo on players' caps to go with the new name. Over the years, Trump has often voiced his opinion about divisive issues in the sports world. In 2017, he urged NFL owners to fire players who protested racial injustice and police brutality by not standing for the national anthem. His administration has targeted universities across the country for allowing transgender athletes to compete, saying they are violating Title IX. He has reportedly been considering issuing an executive order regarding college athletics for months. Advertisement Trump appears to be well aware of the symbolic power of sports. This year, he became the first sitting U.S. president to attend the Super Bowl. This month, he said that a UFC fight would be held on the grounds of the White House next year as part of the country's 250th birthday celebration.
