SDSU investigates vandalism, hate crime at Jewish fraternity house

Yahoo28-02-2025
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego State University Police Department is investigating a recent on-campus incident as vandalism and a hate crime.
Members of Alpha Epsilon Pi, who didn't want to speak on camera, confirm they were targeted.
The president of the fraternity says he and other members are going through a lot right now, still cleaning up and working with police on the investigation.
'The frats do a lot of stuff, so I wasn't too surprised because this isn't the first email that's come out about stuff like this,' SDSU freshman Mackenzie Lancione said.
Lancione is referring to this campus-wide email sent from SDSU's president on Wednesday.
It states campus police are investigating vandalism and hateful antisemitic remarks reported by members of the university's community who identify as Jewish.
Members of Alpha Epsilon Pi told FOX 5/KUSI off-camera it happened late Tuesday night during a brotherhood event.
They say individuals started throwing items at the Alpha Epsilon Pi house, including paint, food and even fireworks.
The exterior of the building still shows signs of the defacement.
In her message to the campus, President Adela de la Torre states in part – 'any form of hate or discrimination has no place at our university, and we stand together in condemning such behavior in the strongest form.'
Fifth-year SDSU student Dylan Farrell says throughout his education he's been aware of issues on campus.
'Racism and like bigotry on campus, as well as a lot of hazing incidents that have caused a lot of school damage and property,' Farrell said.
Farrell says he wants to see the school step in and do more.
'Maybe more enforcement because I don't think they should get rid of the frats all together, but I definitely think they should crunch down a little bit on these incidents,' Farrell said.
Others are glad the school is keeping them informed even when they're not involved.
'At least that it's being brought attention to it, I think is a good start,' Lancione said.
Support services are being offered to any students or staff who need it as the school works to create a safe environment for everyone.

Epstein scandal questions: Letters to the Editor — July 28, 2025

Well, well, well: Ghislaine Maxwell, ice-cold procurer, sex-trafficker and co-conspirator with Jeffrey Epstein in a savage and sordid criminal enterprise is a resident in a rundown federal prison circled by razor wire ('DOJ big sit-down with Epstein madam Ghislaine,' July 25). That's appropriate. It's abhorrent to call Maxwell a socialite; she's a convicted felon. Advertisement Marc D. Greenwood Opelika, Ala. American presidents have been no stranger to scandal. Advertisement Thomas Jefferson dealt with allegations of a long-standing sexual relationship with one of his slaves, Sally Hemings. No less salacious was the Monica Lewinsky affair. Perhaps the most notorious was President Richard Nixon's participation in Watergate, which at its core was an attempt to illegally impact the outcome of an election. While these transgressions served to outrage the public, none involved the alleged molestation of dozens of underage girls, the current scandal impacting President Trump's second term. Although there is no evidence exposing the president's participation in Epstein's acts of degeneracy, one question remains on the minds of many Americans: Was Trump complicit in any way? Advertisement The truth may never be known, but one thing is certain — obfuscation and deflection are not its pathway. Jim Paladino Tampa, Fla. It appears that Maxwell is going to spill her guts in exchange for her freedom. Advertisement Makes sense, and she's definitely got the goods. But she will be living in fear for the rest of her life. Kreg Ramone Manhattan The step by Republican Speaker Mike Johnson to cease possible discussions about the Epstein files by shutting down the House of Representatives smells of desperation. Epstein died almost six years ago — by whatever means — and there is still no real action on releasing the files, despite Trump's assurances. The suggestion of allowing Trump more time to address the matter is farcical given how long it has been a lead item in most newspapers. The files are not going to be forgotten, and hopefully they won't be destroyed, so let them be seen. Let the truth be told. This applies to all countries and their governments. Regarding the pathetic country of France recognizing Palestine: Isn't this the same France that in 1942 rounded up thousands of Jewish citizens, among them almost 4,000 Jewish children, in a bicycle stadium and sent them to the Nazis for extermination ('Macron: France will recognize Palestinian state,' July 25)? Advertisement A total of at least 77,000 Jews were rounded up by the French police and sent to their horrible deaths. Why would we deal with France at all? I don't buy anything from the French and never will. Americans should boycott all of their cheap wine and anything else. Total isolation for this stupid, terrorist-loving country is a good solution. Or better yet, France should invite all the Palestinians there to make it their new homeland. Richard Smith Palmerton, Pa. Advertisement In fear of his ever-growing Muslim population, resulting from open borders, French President Emmanuel Macron will 'bend the knee' and recognize a Palestinian state at the antisemitic UN General Assembly in September. Landlord Who Killed Palestinian Boy in Hate Crime Dies in Prison

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Joseph M. Czuba, the 73-year-old landlord convicted of murdering 6-year-old Palestinian American boy Wadee Alfayoumi and injuring his mother during a 2023 hate crime, has died while serving a 53-year prison sentence. Czuba died Thursday in the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections, according to a statement from the Will County Sheriff's Office. The Context Police say Czuba singled out the victims in reaction to the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas and because of their faith. Authorities in the U.S. have been on high alert for violence driven by Islamophobic or antisemitic sentiment, while both Muslim and Jewish groups have reported a rise in hateful rhetoric as Israel continues to launch airstrikes on the besieged Gaza Strip following Hamas' deadly attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The Will County Sheriff's Office said a woman called 911 to report that her landlord had attacked her with a knife. Authorities did not initially name the victims, but the Chicago chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil liberties organization, identified the boy as Wadee Alfayoume and the woman as his mother, Hanaan Shahin. Czuba yelled "you Muslims must die!" as he choked Shahin and attacked her with a knife, she wrote in text messages sent to her son's father, according to CAIR-Chicago. They had been living in the home for two years, Ahmed Rehab, the group's executive director, said during a news conference following the attack. The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital, and his mother had sustained multiple stab wounds but survived the attack. An autopsy on the boy found he had been stabbed 26 times. Czuba was found guilty of murder, attempted murder, and hate-crime charges. What To Know The February trial featured harrowing evidence including testimony from Shaheen and her frantic 911 call, along with bloody crime scene photos and police video. Jurors deliberated less than 90 minutes before handing in a guilty verdict. Central to prosecutors' case was testimony from the boy's mother, who said Czuba attacked her before moving on to her son, insisting they had to leave because they were Muslim. Czuba's wife Mary, whom he has since divorced, also testified for the prosecution, saying he had become agitated about the Israel-Hamas war. Police said Czuba pulled a knife from a holder on a belt and stabbed the boy 26 times, leaving the knife in the child's body. Some of the bloody crime scene photos were so explicit that the judge agreed to turn television screens showing them away from the audience, which included Wadee's relatives. More Will County Sheriff's Office via AP What People Are Saying In a 2023 statement, former President Joe Biden said: "This horrific act of hate has no place in America and stands against our fundamental values: freedom from fear for how we pray, what we believe, and who we are." He added: "As Americans, we must come together and reject Islamophobia and all forms of bigotry and hatred. I have said repeatedly that I will not be silent in the face of hate. We must be unequivocal. There is no place in America for hate against anyone." Reporting from the Associated Press contributed to this article.

Illinois man who stabbed 6-year-old Palestinian boy to death dies in prison

An Illinois man who was sentenced to 53 years in prison for the murder of a young Palestinian American boy in a 2023 hate crime that shocked the nation has died in prison, authorities said Saturday. Joseph Czuba, 73, died on Thursday while serving his sentence, the Will County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. Officials did not release his cause of death. In February, Czuba was convicted of first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery and hate crimes for fatally stabbing 6-year-old Wadee Alfayoumi and injuring the boy's mother just days after Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attacks in Israel and the launch of Israel's military campaign in Gaza. Authorities said Czuba targeted the boy's family 'due to them being Muslim and the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict involving Hamas and the Israelis.' The mother and son were living in a room rented in Czuba's home in Plainfield Township, a suburb of Chicago. Czuba stabbed the young boy 26 times and attacked the boy's mother, Hanan Shaheen, leaving her critically injured with 12 stab wounds, according to officials. Czuba was sentenced 53 years in prison for killing Wadee and attacking Shaheen, after pleading not guilty. Shaheen, who moved to the U.S. from the West Bank as a teenager nearly 15 years ago, testified that in the days before the stabbings, Czuba told her 'your people' are killing Jewish people. Czuba also demanded that she and her son move out of his home, she said. She added that she and her son had no prior issues with Czuba in the roughly two years they lived in the home, where she and her son shared a kitchen and living room with Czuba and his then-wife. On the day of the attacks, she testified that Czuba barged his way into her room, held her down and stabbed her more than a dozen times. She said Czuba put his fingers in her mouth at one point and tried breaking her teeth. Throughout the encounter, Shaheen said she pulled at Czuba's hair while he shouted, 'You must die!' Her son stood in the corner of the room and watched the encounter fearfully, Shaheen testfied. Czuba told the young boy, 'Wadee, I will take care of you. I will raise you,' and, 'Don't tell people I killed your mom,' as he stabbed his mother, Shaheen said. Shaheen said she then escaped to the bathroom and called 911 while she could hear Czuba stabbing her son. 'He is killing my baby,' she said repeatedly to the dispatcher, according to a recording of the 911 call played at the trial. An attorney for Shaheen did not immediately return a request for comment. Wadee's killing stunned the nation and drew national condemnation at a time when tensions around the country's Muslim and Jewish communities were intensifying after the Oct. 7 attacks. Then-President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris issued statements condemning the killing, saying that 'this horrific act of hate has no place in America.' 'The child's Palestinian Muslim family came to America seeking what we all seek — a refuge to live, learn, and pray in peace,' he said. Ahmed Rehab, the executive director of Council on American-Islamic Relations' Chicago office, said in a statement on Saturday that 'this depraved killer has died, but the hate is still alive and well.'
