Map shows where great white sharks have been reported off Cape Cod this weekend

It's that time of year at the beaches of Massachusetts when the public is urged to be "shark smart." And there have been numerous sightings of great white sharks over the weekend, mostly off Cape Cod, data shows. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy keeps track of great whites in the area via the Sharktivity app. The app shows where sharks have been spotted based on reports from researchers, public officials and user-submitted photos. From Friday through mid-day Sunday, there have been more than a dozen shark reports. The blue fin icon indicates that researchers have confirmed the sighing. Here's when and where they happened: Chatham: On Friday, a white shark was spotted about 30 feet off North Beach Island, traveling south. The next morning, an acoustic receiver detected an 11-foot shark that researchers named "Baobab" in the area. Also on Saturday, a user reported that a shark was seen about 200 feet off North Beach Island and was headed south. Wellfleet: Early Sunday morning, a nine-foot shark named Pearl was detected by a receiver off Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet. A few hours later, "Zero" the shark was detected off Lecount Hollow Beach. Orleans: Peal the shark was also detected early Friday morning near Nauset Beach in Orleans. Falmouth: An unconfirmed shark sighting was reported in Falmouth Friday at Surf Drive Beach. The report says lifeguards cleared people from the water due to a sighting of an approximately six-foot shark. Nantucket: There was an unconfirmed shark sighting north of Nantucket's Great Point Beach on Saturday, according to the app. Monomoy: There were five shark sightings off Monomoy Island on Friday and Saturday. Monomoy is a popular gathering spot for seals, which sharks are known to feast on. Last week, there were two documented sightings of great white sharks off the coast of Maine, prompting a warning for swimmers and beachgoers. Earlier this month, Crane Beach in Ipswich on the North Shore said it would be stepping up shark monitoring this summer to keep swimmers safe after a series of shark sightings last fall.

The Tallest Sand Dunes in North America Have a Seasonal 'Beach' That Only Appears Once a Year—What to Know

Located in southern Colorado's San Luis Valley, Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve is home to North America's tallest sand dunes. These dunes, which rise abruptly from the shadow of Colorado's Sangre de Cristo Mountains, are formed by the interplay of winds funneling through mountain passes and the ongoing recycling of sand via wind. While the star attractions, Hidden Dune and Star Dune, tower approximately 750 feet above the valley floor, one of the park's extraordinary features is Medano Creek, a seasonal stream that emerges in spring and early summer. Fed by snowmelt, Medano Creek—called Colorado's Natural beach—flows at the dunes' base, creating a shallow, inland beach-like playground where visitors can splash, float on tubes, and build sandcastles. The flow typically begins in late April and peaks by early June, with water depths reaching ankle to calf level—often around 20 inches—before drying out during mid-summer. Visitors flock to the dunes when the creek is in bloom as well as for exhilarating activities such as sandboarding, sledding, and dune hiking. It's worth noting that, on warm days, sand surface temps can soar to 150 degrees, so hiking shoes or socks are a must. The best time to visit the park is in spring and early summer, when daytime temperatures are mild and Medano Creek flows with cool, refreshing water. Since the park is designated an International Dark Sky Park, the dunes also offer remarkably clear night skies for stargazing. Before planning your visit, be sure to check the real-time flow of Medano Creek, available from spring through fall, via an online graph that tracks the creek's volume in cubic feet per second (cfs). While the data is collected about five miles upstream from the main Dunes Parking Area, it offers a useful snapshot of current conditions and whether water levels are rising or falling. This year, flow levels aren't expected to top 20 cfs, which is a reminder to plan your visit accordingly. The park is well-equipped for visitors, with dune-rover wheelchairs, convenient dune showers, and the Piñon Flats Campground. Families can participate in a variety of programs, including the National Park Service's Junior Ranger program and Family Archaeology Days. For a unique place to stay near the dunes, consider Dunes Desert Camp. This eco-luxury glamping site has just two spacious safari tents, offering a private and immersive experience in nature. Guests can opt for customizable meals and activities through the camp's Dune Experiences program. For a more traditional stay, Great Sand Dunes Lodge provides a variety of standard room types, as well as campers and geodesic domes.

This Nevada City Was Just Named a Las Vegas Dupe—Offering Casino Culture at a Fraction of the Price

Summertime in Las Vegas certainly delivers the fun. Take this year as the perfect example, with the Backstreet Boys in town for their residency at the Sphere, Bruno Mars at the Park MGM, and pool parties galore, there's something for everyone in Sin City. However, spending a summer vacation in Vegas can come with a hefty price tag. According to Budget Your Trip, the average cost of a week-long stay in Vegas will run about $2,583 for a solo traveler. And that's without major ticket items. So, what's one to do? It's easy: visit a Las Vegas dupe. Travel dupes are those lesser-known destinations that are very similar to other, more popular spots, offering entertainment, dining, and fun that's nearly identical at a lower price point. In July, travel and entertainment experts at a platform for casino and gaming insights, unveiled its list of five budget-friendly destinations in the U.S. that deliver the "thrills, entertainment, and casino action Vegas is famous for." "These alternatives prove you don't need to break the bank to experience world-class gaming, vibrant nightlife, and memorable entertainment," the team added. No. 2 on that list is also rather close to Las Vegas: Reno, Nevada. "Known as 'The Biggest Little City in the World,' Reno delivers authentic Nevada casino culture without the inflated Strip prices," the team wrote. "You're still getting that desert casino atmosphere, but hotel rooms often cost half of what you'd pay in Vegas, and restaurant prices are significantly more reasonable." It added that Reno's downtown casino district is very walkable and far more compact than the Strip, "which makes it easy to hop between venues. Reno also offers outdoor activities like Lake Tahoe access, giving you more bang for your vacation buck." The only destination to outrank Reno is a bit of a wildcard: Kansas City, Missouri. "The Heart of America delivers surprising casino excitement with multiple gaming destinations and entertainment venues at prices that make Vegas look overpriced," the team wrote. "Kansas City's casino resorts offer spacious rooms for less than half of what you'd pay on the Strip, and the city's famous barbecue scene means you'll eat like royalty without the premium pricing." It noted that, beyond offering all the table games and slots you may be looking for, the city comes with the bonus of plenty of Midwest hospitality and a fantastic live music scene that provides "entertainment options that go well beyond the casino floor." Also joining these two on the list is Biloxi, Mississippi, which provides a unique coastal backdrop to your gaming; Laughlin, Nevada, which the team called a "more relaxed, affordable version of the Nevada casino experience; and Tunica, Mississippi, which "has reinvented itself as a major casino destination in the Mississippi Delta." Though if you can swing it, nothing beats a true Vegas experience. And if you need a little help on how to do it right, here's Travel + Leisure's guide on how to plan the perfect trip to Las Vegas for the summer of 2025.
