Columbus City Schools quietly dissolves its Equity Department
According to Columbus City Schools chief of staff and interim communications director Mike De Fabbo, the district no longer has an Equity Department. Although the webpage and staffing is still listed under CCS' departments online, De Fabbo said the website is being updated and the services the Equity Department offered have been folded into a new team.
'Our attendance, climate and culture, restorative practices and social emotional learning work is now part of our Whole Child Supports team aligned to our board guardrail to prioritize a whole child focus,' De Fabbo said.
Why South-Western City Schools parents are considering leaving the district
The Whole Child Supports Department works to improve students' social, physical, cognitive and emotional development by facilitating collaborations between public health and education. It is one of four Board of Education guardrails, or strategic operational actions the superintendent must guide the district by.
The Department of Equity was created in 2020 and grew from a one-person department to a team of people working to create culturally responsive and inclusive classrooms. The department was led by Yolanda Stewart, a former CCS Educator of the Year with more than 20 years of experience in education. Stewart received her Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 2015 in educational policy and leadership, and joined the district in 2001.
According to district appropriations data, the district spent $144,550 a month on the Office of Equity, which still received funding in May. The Whole Child Supports team does not have its own fund, but student support services, special education and accountability services have combined funds and receive around $7.5 million.
On April 17, Superintendent Angela Chapman and school board spokesperson Jennifer Adair jointly said the district would comply with a federal mandate to affirm the district's compliance with Title VI by not engaging in 'illegal DEI practices.' At the time, Chapman and the Board of Education affirmed their compliance but said they were not making changes, as 'illegal DEI' was not defined.

'At Columbus City Schools, we remain deeply committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all students, families, teachers and staff,' Chapman and Adair wrote.
CCS still intends to participate in the Columbus Pride March on June 14, according to its website. The district has reaffirmed its commitment to transgender and gender variant students and the LGBTQ+ community publicly. Most recently, the district affirmed this after it reverted all students' names to their birth names, which parents said 'outed' several students, including some with legal name changes. NBC4 asked what would happen to the Equity Department's employees but did not receive a response. Although the Equity page says the department grew to a group of people, only Stewart was still listed as of publication. Stewart's LinkedIn indicates she still works at CCS, but only lists her current and past positions as 'educator' or 'strategist' with no details about a possible change in role.
School board documents and meeting agendas also did not indicate a change for Stewart, and did not exhibit a shuttering of the Equity Department, according to detailed searches of board documents from 2025.

Just over a week after it appeared the Trump administration and Harvard University could be nearing an agreement, a scathing letter sent Monday by the Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism informed Harvard it had been found guilty of a 'violent violation.' That violation, according to the letter, is that Harvard has been 'in some cases deliberately indifferent, and in others has been a willful participant in anti-Semitic harassment of Jewish students, faculty, and staff.' Read more: Trump admin threatens to cut all Harvard's funding over 'violent violation' The letter told the university it was found to be in violation of the Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin, and warned that it stands to lose all remaining federal funding if it doesn't 'institute adequate changes immediately.' Dear Dr. Garber, Harvard holds the regrettable distinction of being among the most prominent and visible breeding ground for race discrimination, as the Supreme Court noted in Students for Fair Admission v. Harvard, 600 U.S. 181 (2023). That legacy of discrimination persists with Harvard's continued anti-Semitism. Any institution that refuses to meet its duties under federal law may not receive a wide range of federal privileges. Today, the Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism is notifying you that the Office for Civil Rights at the United States Department of Health and Human Services has concluded its Title VI investigation regarding anti-Semitism at Harvard University. After a thorough investigation, HHS OCR finds that Harvard University is in violent violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin. The enclosed Notice of Violation details the findings of fact supporting a conclusion that Harvard has been in some cases deliberately indifferent, and in others has been a willful participant in anti-Semitic harassment of Jewish students, faculty, and staff. For example: The majority of Jewish students reported experiencing negative bias or discrimination on campus, while a quarter felt physically unsafe. Jewish and Israeli students were assaulted and spit on; they hid their kippahs for fear of being harassed and concealed their Jewish identity from classmates for fear of ostracization. Images were widely circulated among the Harvard community that trafficked in obvious anti-Semitic tropes, including one that showed a dollar sign inside a Star of David. The campus was vandalized with anti-Semitic stickers, including one that showed the Israeli flag with a swastika in place of the Star of David. The campus was wracked by demonstrations that flagrantly violated the University's rules of conduct. The demonstrations included calls for genocide and murder, and denied Jewish and Israeli students access to campus spaces. The heart of campus was overrun by an impermissible, multiweek encampment that instilled fear in, and disrupted the studies of, Jewish and Israeli students. Even worse, individuals who participated in the encampment received lax and inconsistent discipline—and as the discipline was reviewed by higher levels among the faculty, it was often downgraded. By the end of the process, even accounting only for the students that were charged, only a fraction received some sort of discipline, and none were suspended. A member of Harvard's own leadership called the disciplinary process 'not fair' and 'not right.' Harvard did not dispute our findings of fact, nor could it. These facts, while tragic for the individuals involved, are important to address for a broader, historical reason as well. As history has proven, the failure to face the reality of anti-Semitism can have catastrophic effects. The Holocaust engulfed Europe due to the '[d]isbelief, incredulity, and denial on the part of both victims and onlookers' which 'worked to the advantage of those who wanted to eradicate the Jews.'1 Harvard's inaction in the face of these civil rights violations is a clear example of the demographic hierarchy that has taken hold of the University. Equal defense of the law demands that all groups, regardless of race or national origin, are protected. Harvard's commitment to racial hierarchies—where individuals are sorted and judged according to their membership in an oppressed group identity and not individual merit—has enabled anti-Semitism to fester on Harvard's campus and has led a once great institution to humiliation, offering remedial math and forcing Jewish students to hide their identities and ancestral stories. Failure to institute adequate changes immediately will result in the loss of all federal financial resources and continue to affect Harvard's relationship with the federal government. Harvard may of course continue to operate free of federal privileges, and perhaps such an opportunity will spur a commitment to excellence that will help Harvard thrive once again. The enclosed document serves to focus Harvard on the need for meaningful and immediate reform and fulfill the requirement under law that Americans cease funding discriminatory institutions. Trump admin threatens to cut all Harvard's funding over ‘violent violation'
The Trump administration is threatening to cut all funding from Harvard University if it doesn't 'institute adequate changes immediately' after finding that the university failed to protect Jewish students from harassment, according to a Monday letter sent to the institution obtained by MassLive. The inaction from Harvard to address campus antisemitism is a 'clear example of the demographic hierarchy,' which has forced Jewish students to hide their identities, according to the Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism, which sent the letter. Antisemitism has been able to 'fester on Harvard's campus and has led a once great institution to humiliation,' the federal task force said. The task force determined this through an investigation into the university where it found the university was in 'violent violation' of Title VI, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color and national origin. The investigation found that Jewish students experienced negative bias or discrimination, were assaulted and that the campus and had to endure demonstrations in violation of university policies, among other findings. The letter comes on the back of President Donald Trump boasting that he was working on a 'mindbogglingly HISTORIC' deal with Harvard in late June. The two have been battling for months, leading to two lawsuits over the cuts to federal funding and over attacks against the university's international student population. The university has so far largely prevailed in court in lawsuits against the Trump administration. A federal judge granted two preliminary injunctions, allowing Harvard University's international students to continue attending school and enter the U.S. to study until the legality of the case is decided. In April, the Trump administration demanded an overhaul of Harvard's leadership structure, admissions and hiring. If the university didn't comply, it risked losing $9 billion in funding, the federal government said. The actions were taken in the name of antisemitism, as the Trump administration claimed Harvard failed to protect Jewish students, particularly in the wake of the war in Gaza. Harvard rejected the administration's demands and set the stage for a historic showdown. 'Harvard may of course continue to operate free of federal privileges, and perhaps such an opportunity will spur a commitment to excellence that will help Harvard thrive once again,' the task force wrote on Monday. Caledon Community Services celebrates Community Impact at 2025 AGM
Caledon Community Services (CCS) held its annual general meeting last week, celebrating incoming board members, saying goodbye to departing members, and recognizing all their accomplishments from the 2024-2025 year. Geraldine Aguiar, Chief Executive Officer at CCS, opened the meeting, remarking they were celebrating the impact that their collective work had on advancing their mission of prioritizing community well-being. 'The mission cannot be done in isolation and your presence here is a testament to our shared goals and commitment to make our community stronger. Truly, together we can,' said Aguiar. The room was packed roof to rafter, which MPP Sylvia Jones noted is a testament to what CCS means to the community. Regional Councillor Christina Early, Board Chair of CCS, recognized all those on the Board and in the room that day. 'All of these individuals work their day job, and this is above and beyond,' said Councillor Early, motioning around the room. 'The board is a strictly volunteer position, and there's a lot of hours that go into it, but we do it with passion, care, and we do it for a community and an organization that we love so very much.' The guest speaker for the evening was Captain (Ret'd) Kevin Junor, a 2025 King Charles III Coronation Medal honoree. Junor has over 40 years of service in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves, and was appointed to the Order of Ontario with demonstrated commitment to community well-being, diversity, inclusion, and preserving military history. Junor shared the story of Mark, a story CCS had once shared with him. Mark was the neighbour who always helped out, driving his friends' kids to practice and dropping off groceries when someone was going through a rough patch. But when he lost his job, Mark skipped meals so his kids wouldn't go hungry. Junor shared that for Mark, one of the hardest parts was being unable to buy his daughter her favourite snack. 'I'm here to tell you that there are a number of individuals like Mark in our community who don't have the privilege to go out for coffee to deal with this. Can you imagine? You have to decide between paying your rent or mortgage or utilities or buying food for your family,' said Junor. 'I always say that it's my responsibility to extend the privilege to those who are in need. My late mom's favorite [quote] was, 'if I can help somebody, as I pass along, that my living shall not be in vain.' I can assure you that the team at CCS is not living in vain,' he said. 'I can assure you that the funds donated are used to help those who do not have the necessities of life. Individuals like Mark, can find their way at CCS for the support needed. This results in improved quality of life.' CCS noted in their 2024-2025 community impact report that their food bank reached a historic record high. Over 1,200 people accessed food and essential items through more than 5,000 food bank visits. 455 children received healthy snacks, access to recreation, and school supplies. CCS also reported over 20,000 hours of direct service for seniors. Recognized at the event were the 2024-2025 Honorary Life members, who have embodied CCS's values and commitment to the community for more than 10 years, and each has contributed to the agency's success with their time, resources, and skills. These members were Melodie Belusa, Tracy Smale, and Stephen Julian. CCS said goodbye to three board members at the AGM: Wanda Buote, Connie Stevens, and Gurvinder Chopra. With three members leaving, CCS also celebrated those joining the board: Lesley Kennedy, Carine Strong, and Simran Virdi. As CCS moves into its next year, its 2024-2027 Strategic Plan focuses on operational and service excellence, partnership growth, sustainability, and advocacy for equitable opportunities. Error!
