Opened a Pandora's box: Russia slams US for Iran strike at UN Security Council session
Russia's Ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, sharply criticised the United States for its recent military strikes on Iran, accusing Washington of opening a "Pandora's box" with potentially catastrophic consequences for global security.
His remarks came during an emergency special session of the Security Council at UN Headquarters in New York on Sunday (local time).
Speaking under the agenda item "threats to international peace and security", Nebenzia condemned the US-led strikes targeting Iran's nuclear sites as "irresponsible, dangerous, and provocative," amid escalating tensions between the Islamic Republic and Israel.
"Washington reasserted that to further the interests of its Israeli ally, it's prepared not only to turn a blind eye to the killings of tens of thousands of Palestinian women, children and older persons but also to gamble with the safety and well-being of humanity as a whole. Through their actions, the US has opened a Pandora's box; no one knows what new catastrophes and suffering it will bring," he noted.
The Russian envoy reiterated Moscow's repeated offers to mediate a peaceful solution to the Iranian nuclear issue, which he said were ignored by the US.

He warned that the US leadership holds full responsibility for the targeted strikes on Iran and the consequences they may unleash.
"We insisted insistently and offered our US colleagues our mediation services so as to find a peaceful, mutually agreeable solution surrounding the Iranian nuclear program, yet our US colleagues are clearly not interested in diplomacy," Nebenzia said.
"Today responsibility for this falls squarely on the shoulders of the US leadership unless we stop the escalation, the Middle East will find itself on the verge of a large-scale conflict with unpredictable consequences for the entire international security system, plus the entire world might end up on the verge of a nuclear disaster," he added.
Nebenzia also called for an immediate halt to aggressive actions by both Israel and the US, urging all sides to exercise restraint and return to diplomacy.
"We call for an immediate cessation of aggressive actions by Israel and the US, restraint on the part of all parties and a return into the fold of international diplomacy and the negotiations process," he stated.
The remarks come amid the escalating conflict in the region following the US-led Operation Midnight Hammer, which targeted three key nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.

Iran could again begin enriching uranium within months: IAEA Chief Grossi
Vienna, June 30 (UNI) Rafael Grossi, chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said that while the US strikes have caused massive damage to the Iranian nuclear sites, they didn't fully destroy them, potentially enabling Tehran to proceed with enriching uranium in 'just a matter of months". Grossi's statement directly contradicts the stance of US President Donald Trump, who had said that the Iranian nuclear project was pushed back by decades, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the centrifuges at Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan were severely damaged, pushing the program by several years, CBS News reported. In an interview with the media agency's 'Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan' programme, the IAEA chief, giving his stance on the varying assessments said 'This hourglass approach in weapons of mass destruction is not a good idea. 'The capacities they have are there. They can have, you know, in a matter of months, I would say, a few cascades of centrifuges spinning and producing enriched uranium, or less than that. But as I said, frankly speaking, one cannot claim that everything has disappeared and there is nothing there.' Grossi added that while the watchdog group's investigations did not hint at a nuclear weapons program, the uranium enrichment was way beyond needed for civilian use. Minister Ponnam accuses BJP of discriminating against BCs
Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar has slammed the BJP, accusing the party of continuing its discriminatory approach towards Backward Classes (BCs) by not allowing a BC leader from filing the nomination for the post of the party State unit president. He alleged that the BJP had once again exposed its 'anti-BC stance' by sidelining BC leaders in internal party affairs. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Mr. Prabhakar questioned the BJP leadership's commitment to social justice, pointing out that the party, despite having three BC MPs and several senior BC leaders, had failed to appoint a BC as its State president. The Minister said that in the past, the BJP had made promises to make a BC leader the Chief Minister, but it had failed to honour those commitments. 'They did not even consider appointing a BC as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly,' he said. He contrasted this with the Congress's measures, stating that social justice is achievable only through the Congress. He said the party had appointed a BC leader as the PCC president. Highlighting the Congress-led initiatives in Telangana, Mr. Prabhakar said the government was moving forward with a caste census and had brought in legislation to ensure 42% reservation for BCs in political, educational, and employment sectors. Referring to the leadership change in the State BJP ahead of the last Assembly elections, he said the party had removed BC leader Bandi Sanjay and replaced him with G.
