Charli XCX feud with Taylor Swift and savage song swipe ahead of Glasto set

Charli XCX's journey to pop-stardom has come with its fair share of headline-grabbing moments, including a much speculated feud with another mega pop icon with an unprecedented fanbase
Pop star Charli XCX is all set to headline the Other Stage on Saturday, June 28, at this year's Glastonbury Festival. Emily Eavis, co-organiser of the annual music festival, recently revealed that in 2025, her team has created more room for audiences at the Other Stage, — which happens to be the iconic music extravaganza's second-biggest arena, and also where Charli XCX is performing her headlining set.
Charli XCX's journey to pop-stardom has come with its fair share of headline-grabbing moments, including a much speculated feud with another mega pop icon with an unprecedented fanbase — Taylor Swift.

For several years now, the world of music has been abuzz with whispers of an impassioned feud between Charli and Taylor — and the former's soft jabs and subtle hints over the years have only fanned the flames of the seemingly inextinguishable fire.

Once close friends, the pair's friendship reportedly turned sour and it seems there may be no love lost between the two chart-toppers.
So why does the world think the two musicians are at loggerheads? Let's take a closer look at their alleged feud.
Charli XCX's comments after touring with Taylor Swift in 2018
After touring with Taylor in 2018, Charli seemingly threw shade at Swifties — Taylor's ultra-dedicated fanbase — adding fuel to the fire of their speculated clash.
Charli XCX had joined Taylor Swift on her Reputation tour as an opening act. Despite the opportunity to perform in front of thousands, she expressed dissatisfaction with the fanbase.
Speaking to Pitchfork after the tour, Charli said: "As an artist, it kind of felt like I was getting up onstage and waving to five-year-olds."

She did however say she was "really grateful" for the opportunity and later clarified that her comments had been blown out of proportion. Following backlash online, Charli took to Twitter /X to explain herself.
She wrote: "I say in the article and have said many times before, I am extremely grateful to Taylor for inviting me to open for her. She's one of the biggest artists of my generation and the Reputation tour was one of the biggest tours in history."

She further clarified that her comment referred to the timing of her performance, as she was used to performing at a later slot. "Leading up to that tour I'd been playing a (ton) of 18+ club shows, and so to be onstage in front of all ages was new to me and made me approach my performances with a whole new kind of energy," she added.
Charli's statement before the release of her album Brat
Before the eagerly anticipated release of Charli's chart-topping album BRAT on June 7, 2024, the singer took to TikTok and shared a 'brat PSA' in which she warned her fans not to read too deeply into any of the lyrics and take out hidden meanings.

Apart from her single Von Dutch which was released in February that same year, Charli clarified in her TikTok video PSA: 'The other tracks in question aren't diss tracks. They're really just about how it's so complicated being an artist, especially a female artist, where you are pitted against your peers and also expected to be best friends with every single person constantly, when if you're not, you're deemed a bad feminist.'
But even with the warning, Charli's sixth studio album seemed to fan the flames of the dispute, with one song in particular, titled Sympathy Is A Knife, sparking speculation among fans with its lyrics: 'Don't wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend's show, Fingers crossed behind my back, I hope they break up quick.'

Many believed the third track on her album to be a dig at Taylor's past relationship with Matty Healy — the frontman of The 1975 — who happens to be bandmates with Charli's fiancé George Daniel.
In an interview with Vulture, Charli explained: 'People are gonna think what they want to think. That song is about me and my feelings and my anxiety and the way my brain creates narratives and stories in my head when I feel insecure and how I don't want to be in those situations physically when I feel self-doubt.'
Charli retweets Taylor
After Taylor Swift tweeted a positive review of her latest album The Tortured Poets Department, Charli quote-tweeted the pop star on her X (previously Twitter) profile and wrote: 'everyone's hype for the sweat tour!', seemingly in an effort to put the feud rumours to rest.

Matty Healy in the middle
After Taylor Swift and Matty Healy's publicised breakup, The 1975 singer went on to date model and musician Gabbriette Bechtel, who also happens to be the former bandmate and close friend of Charli XCX. Just days after Charli's Brat album release, the pop star shared a picture on social media of what looked like Matty's black diamond engagement ring for Gabbriette with the caption 'MARRYING THE 1975 IS VERY BRAT'. Matty and Gabbriette went on to confirm their engagement and the public post was taken as a sign of Charli choosing sides, especially after those lyrics.
Charli asks fans to stop the anti-Taylor chants at her shows

In June 2024, Charli came out with a strong statement in support of Taylor, after videos of some of her Brazilian fans chanting 'Death to Taylor' in Portuguese began circulating after her São Paulo show.
Taking to Instagram stories, the singer wrote: 'Can the people who do this please stop. Online or at my shows. It is the opposite of what I want and it disturbs me that anyone would think there is room for this in this community.'
Taylor Swift praises Charli XCX
In an August 2024 New York Magazine profile of the Brat pop star, Taylor showered high praise on her ex touring mate and said: 'I've been blown away by Charli's melodic sensibilities since I first heard 'Stay Away' in 2011. Her writing is surreal and inventive, always. She just takes a song to places you wouldn't expect it to go, and she's been doing it consistently for over a decade. I love to see hard work like that pay off.'
Remix of Sympathy Is a Knife
In the same Vulture profile, Charli XCX shared that she's toying with the idea of releasing a remix of the popular track from her album, sharing: 'I wrote this three or four weeks ago, about this idea of, like, you have to fall–if you're deemed to be even in the slightest way on top, you have to fall. I'm not a f—ing idiot. I know how shit works.'
Even though both stars have continuously denied the rumours of a feud in their own ways over the years, some fans remain sceptical.

Models lured to sick 'Porta-Potty' Dubai parties by men lavishing them with gifts

Dubai is known for its glitzy lifestyle that draws hundreds of social media influencers and reality TV stars - but inside, there's a dark secret that has sparked concern for the welfare of women travelling to the popular tourism hotspot. Models have been lured to sick 'Porta-Potty' parties by men lavishing them with gifts as we look at inside Dubai's dark underbelly. These twisted gatherings - reportedly organised by wealthy men - lure young models and influencers with promises of tens of thousands of pounds, luxury gifts, and lavish hotel stays, reports the Mirror. ‌ But behind the glitz lies a horrifying truth, including acts of extreme sexual degradation, physical abuse, and potential legal peril for the women involved. An influencer sparked concern on TikTok after sharing extravagant gifts bought for her by a stranger she met at the gym on Wednesday. ‌ Jade, who goes by @outplayedbyjade online, is originally from France but travelled to Dubai as she documented her trip online. In her video, she explained how she had been leaving the gym when workers approached her with a gift from someone she had met on the treadmill. "I didn't think much of it," she explained in the video. A worker handed her a bouquet of flowers and chocolate from the man she had struck up a conversation with. Flattered, she texted the number he had left with the gift to thank him, after which she then received a call from a shop assistant at the luxury jewellery designer store Van Cleef & Arpels. "I'm a very curious girl, so I make my way over to the shop," she explained. "This assistant pulls out a beautiful bracelet and a matching necklace." All together, the gifts were worth around £3,000. And while Jade was over the moon with her gifts, fans were quick to warn the influencer that he was a "professional" and to "be careful" amid reports of men recruiting women for " Porta-Parties" in Dubai. ‌ There was no information to confirm the intentions of the man spoiling Jade. Maria Kovalchuk, a 20-year-old Ukrainian adult model, who was reportedly left for dead after attending one of the Porta-Potty parties. Maria vanished after telling her mother she'd been invited to stay overnight with two men claiming to be modelling agents. She never made her flight to Thailand. ‌ Ten days later, on March 19, she was found dumped at the roadside in Dubai, suffering from a shattered spine, broken limbs, and severe internal injuries. Maria has undergone multiple surgeries, and her family, now at her bedside, are desperate for answers. It's thought she is still recovering from her injuries. ‌ Dubai Police confirmed that Maria is receiving medical care, but claimed she 'entered a restricted construction site alone and fell from a height'. A statement many find hard to accept, given the disturbing rumours swirling around her disappearance. Russian lawyer Katya Gordon, who has followed the case closely, bluntly alleged: "Model Maria Kovalchuk was found dying on the side of the road in the UAE after a party. The scandal with the Porta Potty parties has been raging for over a year." Gordon and others allege that Maria may have been forced to take part in a sex act involving human faeces - a central theme of these "Porta-Potty" events, where humiliation and abuse are part of the package. ‌ These parties reportedly involve women being paid vast sums of money to perform grotesque acts involving bodily fluids, degradation and pain. Viral videos have helped expose this shadowy world, but the abuse is largely hidden by Dubai's shiny reputation and strict censorship laws. And the women involved in these parties could even find themselves prosecuted. Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, has warned that women involved in these parties - even against their will - could face charges of adultery or indecency, especially if married men are present. ‌ "Sex outside marriage has been legalised in Dubai, but organisers have exploited this. Women think they're attending a private party - instead, they're thrown into horrific, dangerous situations with real legal risk," Stirling said. Maria's mother told Ukrainian media: "She has no documents, no phone, nothing. She's had three operations. She can't speak. We were told she went to a party, but the promoter claims he never saw her. We're terrified of what really happened." Mo Chara says ‘I'm a free man' as Kneecap take to Glastonbury stage

Kneecap member Mo Chara said 'Glastonbury, I'm a free man' as the Irish rap trio took to the West Holts Stage at the festival on Saturday. The group, who hail from Belfast, have been in the headlines after member Liam Og O hAnnaidh, who performs under the name Mo Chara, was charged with a terror offence. The 27-year-old wore a keffiyeh during the set, while member JJ O Dochartaigh, who performs under the name DJ Provai, wore his signature tri-coloured balaclava as well as a T-shirt that said: 'We are all Palestine Action' in reference to the soon-to-be banned campaign group. News broadcasts criticising the hip hop trio played from the sound system before they walked onto the stage were booed by the Glastonbury Festival audience. Access to the area around the West Holts Stage was closed around 45 minutes before their performance after groups of fans arrived to form a sea of Irish and Palestinian flags. Rap punk duo Bob Vylan performed on the stage before Kneecap and led the crowd in chants of 'Free, free Palestine' and 'Death, death to the IDF'. In the run up to the festival at Worthy Farm in Somerset, several politicians called for Kneecap to be removed from the line-up and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said their performance would not be 'appropriate'. Earlier on Saturday, the BBC confirmed they would not be live-streaming the set but said the performance is likely to be made available on-demand later. A BBC spokesperson said: 'As the broadcast partner, the BBC is bringing audiences extensive music coverage from Glastonbury, with artists booked by the festival organisers. 'While the BBC doesn't ban artists, our plans ensure that our programming meets our editorial guidelines. 'We don't always live-stream every act from the main stages and look to make an on-demand version of Kneecap's performance available on our digital platforms, alongside more than 90 other sets.' It is understood the BBC needs to consider the performance before making a final decision. The band said on Instagram: 'The propaganda wing of the regime has just contacted us…. 'They WILL put our set from Glastonbury today on the iPlayer later this evening for your viewing pleasure.' O hAnnaidh, 27, was charged with allegedly displaying a flag in support of proscribed terrorist organisation Hezbollah, while saying 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah' at a gig in November last year. On June 18 the rapper was cheered by hundreds of supporters as he arrived with bandmates Naoise O Caireallain and O Dochartaigh at Westminster Magistrates' Court in Free Mo Chara T-shirts. He was released on unconditional bail until the next hearing at the same court on August 20. Ahead of the group's performance, Gemma Gibson, 41, from Newcastle told the PA news agency that she was 'really excited' to see Kneecap perform. Asked if their set should have been cancelled amid the ongoing controversy, she said: 'Well, that would be completely against everything that Glastonbury stands for… This is where they should be.' Alternative metal band Deftones were due to play on Saturday night but their slot has now been filled by rapper Skepta. A social media post from Glastonbury Festival said: 'Deftones have been forced to cancel tonight's 8.30pm Other Stage performance due to illness in the band. 'Skepta will kindly step-in, taking the stage at 9pm. 'He says: 'Let's go!!! No crew, no production but am ready to shut Glastonbury down. Victory lap time. Pre-Big Smoke 2025!'' Playing on Saturday afternoon was Leeds rock band Kaiser Chiefs and US star Brandi Carlile, who released an album with Sir Elton John earlier in the year. Irish singer CMAT, who played the Pyramid Stage on Friday, performed a secret set at the BBC Introducing stage on Saturday. Neil Young, best known for songs such as Rockin' In The Free World, Like A Hurricane and Cinnamon Girl, will headline the Pyramid Stage on Saturday night with his band the Chrome Hearts. The BBC will broadcast Young's set after previously saying it would not be shown 'at the artist's request'. Another act expected to draw a big crowd is Brat star Charli XCX, who will headline the Other Stage around the same time Young and Grammy Award-winning rapper Doechii will also perform. Celebrities who have been spotted at the festival include singer Harry Styles, Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne, The Crown actor Emma Corrin, and Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn. Performing in the coveted Sunday legends slot this year is Sir Rod Stewart, who previously said he will be joined by his former Faces band member Ronnie Wood, as well as other guests.
