Boy injured in rare octopus incident at Texas aquarium

An octopus at the San Antonio Aquarium left a six-year-old boy with 'hickeys' covering his arm after the child reached into a touch tank, and the sea animal wouldn't let go. The boy's mom, Britney Taryn, has gone viral in a series of TikToks – two of which have garnered over 3 million views – after sharing how a giant Pacific octopus named Cthulhu latched onto her son Leo's arm during their July 14 visit. She said they visit often and had touched the octopus before without incident. Taryn shared glimpses of Leo's arm, decorated with dark purple solution cup bruises from his wrist to his armpit. "He started saying, 'Mom, it's not letting me go,'" Taryn said in one video, adding that it took three adults to remove the animals from the youngster's arm. The San Antonio Aquarium responded indirectly to the incident by posting two videos shortly after Taryn's posts gained popularity. In a TikTok on July 23, an aquarium employee explained that giant Pacific Octopuses have been known to use their suction cups to move objects up to 700 pounds. 'If you look around, this whole tank is open, okay?' the employee said of Cthulhu's larger-than-recommended 1,000-gallon tank. 'A lot of times you will go to an aquarium and it will be completely enclosed, and it's enclosed because these guys are expert problem solvers, and they're known to escape.' 'We have never had an octopus escape,' she claimed. 'We make them very, very happy. They have a lot of toys, enrichment, and problem-solving activities. We also give them a very mixed diet, a nutritious diet, and they realize that this is a great place.' The video ends with Cthulhu giving the employee some 'tough love' by latching onto her arm. The adult was able to remove the 'very strong' animal by herself, but Taryn was less than impressed by the clip. 'Now, imagine that that is a six-year-old,' she said in response. The aquarium posted another TikTok with Cthulhu and the employee last week, where she shares that octopus bruises aren't harmful and typically fade within seven to 14 days. She said giant Pacific Octopuses have around 200 suction cups per arm. 'She loves people, so she gets so excited sometimes, especially if it's food time, and she's trying to pry open my hand to get the shrimp,' the employee said, holding the crustacean. 'She's so intelligent. She has this giant beak. She could bite me if she really wanted to. I'm not her food source, but this is her food source, and she has a great time trying to get a hold of it. 'So with that, all this suction motion sometimes will create hickeys. We call them octopus kisses, but they're bruises, and it's basically where red blood comes up to the surface of your skin. She's not trying to be harmful in any manner.' The employee concluded, 'Suction marks are actually common and normal for strong, inquisitive animals like her. I promise it's not a cosmic cry for help.' Taryn's videos have sparked debate about the safety of kids interacting with animals like octopuses. While she hasn't called the incident an attack and has since revisited the octopus with Leo, she said they were never warned about potential risks. She's using social media to caution others and advocate for better animal care. Taryn has asked the San Antonio Aquarium to document the incident and explain their safety protocols, but says she hasn't received a response. The Independent has contacted the San Antonio Aquarium for comment. Solve the daily Crossword

Pope thrills hundreds of thousands of young Catholics at Holy Year youth festival

ROME (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of young Catholics poured into a vast field on Rome's outskirts Saturday for the weekend highlight of the Vatican's 2025 Holy Year: an evening vigil, outdoor slumber party and morning Mass celebrated by Pope Leo XIV that marks his first big encounter with the next generation of Catholics. Leo arrived by helicopter as the sun set over the Tor Vergata field and immediately boarded his open-topped popemobile for long loops through the flag-waving, cheering pilgrims. They had already been partying there for hours, setting up campsites for the night as misting trucks and water cannons spritzed them to cool them down from the 30C (85F) temperatures. 'It is something spiritual, that you can experience only every 25 years,' said Francisco Michel, a pilgrim from Mexico. 'As a young person, having the chance to live this meting with the pope I feel it is a spiritual growth.' For the past week, these bands of young Catholics from around the world have poured into Rome for their special Jubilee celebration, in a Holy Year in which 32 million people are expected to descend on the Vatican to participate in a centuries-old pilgrimage to the seat of Catholicism. The young people have been traipsing down cobblestoned streets in color-coordinated T-shirts, praying the Rosary and singing hymns with guitars, bongo drums and tambourines shimmying alongside. Using their flags as tarps to shield them from the sun, they have taken over entire piazzas for Christian rock concerts and inspirational talks, and stood for hours at the Circus Maximus to confess their sins to 1,000 priests offering the sacrament in a dozen different languages. History's first American pope was presiding over the vigil Saturday night. He was then returning to the Vatican for the night and coming back for another popemobile romp and Mass on Sunday morning. A mini World Youth Day, 25 years later It all has the vibe of a World Youth Day, the Catholic Woodstock festival that St. John Paul II inaugurated and made famous in Rome in 2000 at the very same Tor Vergata field. Then, before an estimated 2 million people, John Paul told the young pilgrims they were the 'sentinels of the morning' at the dawn of the third millennium. Officials had initially expected 500,000 youngsters this weekend, but Leo hinted the number might reach 1 million. 'It's a bit messed up, but this is what is nice about the Jubilee,' said Chloe Jobbour, a 19-year-old Lebanese Catholic who was in Rome with a group of more than 200 young members of the Community of the Beatitudes, a France-based charismatic group. She said, for example, that it had taken two hours to get dinner at a KFC overwhelmed by orders Friday night. The Salesian school that offered her group housing is an hour away by bus. But Jobbour, like many in Rome this week, didn't mind the discomfort: It's all part of the experience. 'I don't expect it to be better than that. I expected it this way,' she said, as members of her group gathered on church steps near the Vatican to sing and pray Saturday morning before heading out to Tor Vergata. There was one tragedy before the vigil began. The Vatican confirmed that an Egyptian 18-year-old woman, identified as Pascale Rafic, died during the pilgrimage, reportedly of cardiac arrest. Leo met Saturday with her group and extended his condolences to her family. Romans inconvenienced, but tolerant Those Romans who didn't flee the onslaught have been inconvenienced by the additional strain on the city's notoriously insufficient public transport system. Residents are sharing social media posts of outbursts by Romans at kids flooding subway platforms and crowding bus stops that have delayed and complicated their commutes to work. But other Romans have welcomed the enthusiasm the youngsters have brought. Premier Giorgia Meloni offered a video welcome, marveling at the 'extraordinary festival of faith, joy and hope' that the young people had created. 'I think it's marvelous,' said Rome hairdresser Rina Verdone, who lives near the Tor Vergata field and woke up Saturday to find a gaggle of police outside her home as part of the massive, 4,000-strong operation mounted to keep the peace. 'You think the faith, the religion is in difficulty, but this is proof that it's not so.' Verdone had already made plans to take an alternate route home Saturday afternoon, that would require an extra kilometer (half-mile) walk, because she feared the 'invasion' of kids in her neighborhood would disrupt her usual bus route. But she said she was more than happy to make the sacrifice. 'You think of invasion as something negative. But this is a positive invasion,' she said. ___ AP reporter Paolo Santalucia contributed to this story. ___ Associated Press religion coverage receives support through the AP's collaboration with The Conversation US, with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc. Your Weekly Horoscopes: August 3 to 9, 2025

I'm well aware that everyone is tired of bad news. I do my best to deliver even the most challenging astrology with a dash of optimism. But this coming week? I'm taking a deep breath before I launch into these horoscopes. It's by no means the 'worst' week of this year's astrology, but it's not easy. Action planet Mars enters Libra on the 6th, a sign where he struggles to assert himself. Mars then makes a supportive trine to Uranus on the 8th: a shock to the system that encourages risk taking. Then—and this is the roughest part of it—on the same day, Mars faces off with Saturn. This is a once-in-two-year aspect that brings roadblocks and frustrations. Mars then faces off with hazy Neptune on the 9th, an aspect that makes us sluggish and has us questioning what's real vs. what's a put a cherry on top, this is all happening during a Full Moon in Aquarius on the 9th. In stark contrast to the glamour of Leo season, this full moon delivers a much-needed reality week is tough, but will also feel like a 'final battle.' There's a lot of growth and some well-deserved ease on the other side. (Horoscopes follow for each sign. If you know your rising sign, reading for that sign too will provide further insight.) 3 Zodiac Signs Always Getting in Their Own Way Aries (March 21 - April 19) This week's astrology puts you at odds with someone very important. The full moon in Aquarius on the 9th is revealing a big dream. A dream that will force you out of your comfort zone and possibly into a whole new industry or community. Someone in your life may not understand why you want to make this change. Asserting your needs is hard, and it's even harder when you're living for someone else rather than in your own truth. This week's mantra: 'Forward.' Taurus (April 20 - May 20) This week's full moon in Aquarius on the 9th is a breakthrough moment for your career. You're being recognized for all of your hard work, put into a leadership position or stepping down to pursue other things. At the same time though, you're caught in a slog of obligations, and if you're not willing to give up something that's outside your control, you could end up super burned out or sick. It's time to find a better way of feeling valuable. This week's mantra: 'Ease.' Gemini (May 21 - June 20) The full moon in Aquarius on the 9th is your opportunity to break out of your usual routine. Whether it's a long-planned trip, or a sudden adventure, this week is about owning your experiences. At the same time, you might be feeling overextended in your friendships or dating life. Maybe someone you're dating isn't fitting in with your friend group. Or maybe your friends keep trying to set you up with someone you can't stand. What makes you feel good? This week's mantra: 'Enjoy.' Cancer (June 21 - July 22) This week's full moon in Aquarius on the 9th reveals a situation where someone is giving much more than they're taking. You're an extremely generous person, but it's possible that someone has been taking advantage of your generosity. Things are changing for you at home, and getting more serious at work. Don't sign any contract before carefully reviewing the terms and conditions. This week's mantra: 'Own.' Leo (July 23 - August 22) The full moon in Aquarius on the 9th puts a spotlight on your most important relationships. Whether you're building a client-based business, entering a new phase of married life, or feeling thankful for your bestie, you're feeling very grateful for the people you've committed to. At the same time, you're feeling overwhelmed by your schedule and behind on your larger goals. Travel plans may also go awry during this intense week. Be patient and breathe. This week's mantra: 'Adapt.' Virgo (August 23 - September 23) The full moon in Aquarius on the 9th brings drama at work to a head. Whether it's conflict with a coworker or a scuttle with your kid's nanny, you're feeling like you're always getting the short end of the deal. At the same time, you're also feeling stretched thin financially. You're making important investments in your future but daily life is also expensive. Spend some time going through your budgets and reallocating this week. This week's mantra: 'Share.' Libra (September 23 - October 21) The full moon in Aquarius on the 9th makes it clear that the only way forward is following your heart. Mars enters your sign on the 6th, and friends and lovers might be surprised when you suddenly take an assertive tone. What they don't know is that this is something you've wanted for a long time. You're just finally finding your voice. Relationships that have kept you small may not survive this week. That's a good thing. This Week's Mantra: "Align." Scorpio (October 22 - November 21) It's time to go inward, Scorpio. Your ruling planet Mars moves into Libra and your unconscious sector on the 6th. Though you have a lot on your plate, the way through might be cancelling plans, delegating obligations and spending the full moon in Aquarius on the 9th at home on the couch. The more time you take for yourself now, the more energy you'll have to make big waves in the fall. This week's mantra: 'Hermit.' Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) The full moon in Aquarius on the 9th brings a major revelation that leads to an important conversation. Whether your sister is pregnant, your roommate's moving out, or your local bar is closing, it's the end of one era and the beginning of another one. You're also feeling a bit restless this week, especially in your dating life or in more surface-level connections with friends. Time to shake things up. This week's mantra: 'Ask.' Capricorn (December 22 - January 19) The full moon in Aquarius on the 9th reveals whether or not something you bought back in late January was a good investment. You might also get some extra cash or treated to lunch by a friend. At the same time, you're feeling an intense push and pull between your home life and career. As much as you want to stay home and snuggle with your cat, you're running around town to gigs and job interviews. Things get easier next week, but there's still a lot to work to do to find balance. This week's mantra: 'Juggle' Aquarius (January 20 - February 18) All eyes are on you, Aquarius! This week's full moon on the 9th is in your sign and like every peak of Leo season, you're feeling unexpectedly emotional. You're also struggling to manage your time between pursuing a larger goal and handling all your daily routines. This comes to a head on the 8th when you consider skipping your sister's birthday party to take a last-minute trip out of town instead. This week's mantra: 'Steady.' Pisces (February 19 - March 20) The full moon in Aquarius on the 9th finds you not just out of office, but off the grid. This kind of digital detox has been a long time coming and whether you're on a literal meditation retreat or just not checking your emails during lunch, there's power in taking some time to hear your own thoughts. Your resources have been stretched thin recently, not just your money but your emotions too. How can you give some of that generosity back to yourself? This week's mantra: 'Accept.'
