2026 3-star ATH is 'locked in' with Texas A&M despite Auburn offer

USA Today2 days ago
Texas A&M's 2026 recruiting class features one of the more intriguing athletes in the cycle, who is expected to play tight end with the Aggies once he makes his way to campus. As the starting quarterback for Fort Bend Marshall HS in Missouri City, Texas, the school where former standout running back De'Von Achane played, three-star athlete Kaeden Johnson has now become a coveted prospect in the SEC.
Sometimes, it takes just one notable program noticing an under-the-radar prospect's ability to create a momentum shift, which has become the case with Johnson, who has now received an offer from Auburn, where his father, Spencer Johnson, played for the Tigers from 2000 to 2003. Johnson also reportedly has other family members who live in the Auburn, Alabama area.
Johnson has now shut down his recruitment, like many of the program's 26 commitments in the class. However, during a recent interview with On3/Rivals Auburn insider Jeffrey Lee, Johnson stated that he is "pretty locked in with Texas A&M," compared to the excitement surrounding the offer from his childhood team.
"I'm still trying to gt a date set," Johnson stated. "But it's going to take a lot. I'm pretty locked in with A&M."
Johnson further explained that, while the offer is both exciting and personal, Texas A&M remains the leader to sign him in early December.
"It's a cool opportunity to get offered by Auburn where my dad played, but it's going to take a lot to change my commitment."
Johnson's 2024 season included 2,109 yards and 25 touchdowns through the air, completing 60% of his passes, while also rushing for 571 yards and six touchdowns. Johnson is now the 174th-ranked prospect in the 2026 cycle and the 24th-ranked prospect in Texas.

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips asked about possible departures of Clemson, Florida State

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips believes the league is on solid ground following settlements with Clemson and Florida State—and insists both programs are satisfied with how things turned out. Clemson emerged with everything it sought, including access to its full media rights, a favorable exit fee, and an updated brand initiative policy. At Tuesday's Commissioner's Forum during ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte, Phillips said the process was handled fairly and doesn't foresee future friction. 'If you want to earn more money, then you're going to need to invest,' Phillips said. 'Go perform in football and basketball, draw viewership, schedule strong non-conference games—those are the factors that will separate schools.' Phillips referenced Clemson's upcoming season opener against LSU as a key example of how schools can generate additional revenue through visibility and competitive matchups. He emphasized that everyone receives a base share of viewership revenue, but bonuses are tied to performance metrics and audience draw. 'It may not fit every league, but it was the right reconciliation for our league,' Phillips said of the ACC's updated model. He also shot down concerns that Clemson or Florida State might return with further demands. According to Phillips, both schools were transparent about what they wanted, and the league responded in a way that left everyone content. 'Since March, I've not felt stronger about this league than I do right now,' he said. 'It's not hyperbole. With record revenue distribution, national championships, and rising football success, we're in a great position moving forward.' Financially, the ACC is trending upward. The league recently reported its highest gross revenue ever—over $711 million for the 2023-24 fiscal year. That marked a 56% jump over five years, and per-school payouts averaged $45 million, also a record. The ACC ranked among the top three power conferences in both total revenue and average school distribution. 'People said a lot of things about the league,' Phillips said, 'but we never wavered. We stayed steady and exercised our partnership with ESPN, which secures our platform into the next decade.' Everything Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko said during Coach's Night in San Antonio

For his sixth stop on the Coach's Night tour, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko previewed the upcoming season for the Aggies at the San Antonio A&M Club on Monday night. Elko's appearance at Coach's Night marked the first time behind the podium for the second-year head coach since the Southeastern Conference's media days last week. The Aggies are set to kick off the 2025 campaign against UTSA on Saturday, Aug. 30, at Kyle Field. With a new season of college football in Bryan-College Station, Texas, set to begin in just 39 days, "talking season" is nearing the end. When it comes to football in the SEC, the talking never stops, however. Heading into his second season leading the Aggies, that testament is something Elko has come to learn. As he continues to travel around the state to speak in front of Texas A&M alumni, the spirit and passion from the Aggie faithful are unlike anything Elko has ever seen. Here is everything Elko had to say at Coach's Night in front of the San Antonio A&M Club on Monday, according to TexAgs: Elko credits passionate display from A&M alumni "I want to say thank you to you all. Every time I go to these Coach's Nights, I'm blown away by the Aggie Spirit. I've been at a lot of universities, and there is nothing like this." Elko praises support from fans at Kyle Field "Last year we averaged over 102,000 people at our home games. We were 101% filled in Kyle Field. That number is larger than any other SEC stadium. We have support at an unbelivable level, and now we'll build the program to match it." Elko talks team's willingness to serve community "We've become extremely active in the Bryan-College Station area to give back with the Big Event and with schools. That's really important for young people to give back to keep them grounded, humble and away from entitlement." Elko expresses excitement about Aggie retention "Look at who goes in and who goes out of a program. We've been able to keep so many key players. We were able to retain about 99% of the players we wanted to return to our program, so we're really excited about that." Elko speaks on Marcel Reed's freshman season "Now he understands what it's like to be QB1 in the SEC. What he had to go through last year is not how you'd write the script for a first-time starter bring in and out. What gets lost is the growth he had last year." Elko on Aggie RB room "We returned all of our ball-carriers. Le'Veon Moss will be ready to go. We're excited to have Rueben Owens back. We're glad we got Amari Daniels back. E.J. Smith dealt with a lot of injuries last year, but he's healthy now." Elko excited about offensive line return "It's great to bring back all seven of our top offensive linemen. The last time we were this old at this position, we ended our season playing in the Orange Bowl. It's a really strong starting point to have a group like that." Elko talks WR reform "We had to reform the wide receiver position. Kevin Concepcion has been everything we hoped he could be. He's elevated the level of the entire wide receiver room. Mario Craver continues to develop. We're excited about the development of Ashton Bethel-Roman and Terry Bussey." Elko's defensive standard at A&M "It is not lost on me the standard we have for defense at Texas A&M. Getting Will Lee III back to anchor the corner position was huge. We believe we've elevated the safety position. Taurean York is the rock of that defense." Elko on filling gaps from departing players "We have had more NFL Draft picks on the defensive line since I got here in 2018 than any other team in the SEC. We're comfortable replacing great players. DJ Hicks, Albert Regis, Rylan Kennedy and Cashius Howell will step up." Elko talks program's future "We have 15 starters back. We have all of our specialists back. We're excited about where this program is going. We have to build a program you are all proud of. Let's be proud of who we are and where we're going." Elko dismisses Bussey playing both ways "He will not. His story has to start at wide receiver. That's not to take away of what he can do or that he won't ever be a two-way player, but we need him to impact the game on offense." Elko says Shemar Stewart will not return "Absolutely not. Some people live in this fairytale land of social media where you can create false narratives. I see him every day in our weight room, but he's a Cincinnati Bengal." Elko describes the most difficult challenge in football "The biggest puzzle of modern college football is maintaining chemistry and culture in an era where money has become involved in it. Who you bring into your program is crticial. We have to be intentional about how we bring this team together." Elko praises Regis "It's really exciting to have a player as talented as Albert Regis. He's a grown man. He's a great leader and a phenomenal player. Anchors like that matter." Elko on putting more players in the NFL "We have to have more NFL players across the board. If you look at teams that win the SEC, they're getting 20 players drafted over a two-year period. We will comfortably have 10 kids get their name called at the end of this season." Elko stresses importance of protecting Reed "I'm going to knock on wood one more time. Obviously that's something that has to change. It's not lost on us that keeping our quarterback protected and healthy is a critical piece of our success." Spartans to report for preseason fall camp next week

Michigan State football will reportedly kick off fall camp next week. On3's Pete Nakos has put together a comprehensive list of when each power four team across the country will report for fall preseason camp, and for Michigan State that is next week. Per Nakos, the Spartans are scheduled to report to East Lansing, Mich. on July 28 with "camp starting shortly after." With the Spartans slated to return for preseason camp early next week, we as media and fans should get our first look at the 2025 Michigan State squad sometime shortly after they report. Typically, media will be given availability to attend at least a portion of practice and talk to players and coaches the first week the team reports for fall camp. Michigan State is coming off a third straight losing season, with the Spartans finishing 5-7 in Jonathan Smith's first year as the head coach. The Spartans enter this fall with similar national expectations as last season, with many picking them to finish in the bottom half of the Big Ten and landing right around the bowl eligibility cutoff again. Michigan State officially opens the 2025 season on August 29 against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET with the game slated to be televised on FS1.
