Astrolight Secures €2.8M to Propel Laser Communication Breakthroughs
Astrolight's flagship product, the ATLAS terminal, is engineered to facilitate data transmission from low Earth orbit satellites to ground stations at speeds up to ten times faster than conventional methods. This technology not only enhances data throughput but also offers increased resistance to jamming and interception, addressing critical concerns in both commercial and defence sectors.
The company's collaboration with NATO's Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic has positioned it among the top ten innovators selected from 44 participants. This partnership provides Astrolight with access to up to €300,000 in additional funding, specialised training, and a network of investors, facilitating the adaptation of its technologies for defence applications.

Astrolight's POLARIS system, designed for ship-to-ship communication, exemplifies its dual-use approach. Developed in collaboration with the Lithuanian Navy and the Center for Physical Sciences and Technology, POLARIS aims to replace traditional signal lamps with laser-based communication, enhancing operational stealth and resilience in contested environments.
In a significant stride towards international collaboration, Astrolight has been selected to supply its ATLAS-1 optical terminal for the PeakSat mission, a CubeSat project led by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Scheduled for launch in the fourth quarter of 2025, PeakSat will demonstrate laser communication capabilities from LEO to ground stations in Greece, marking a pivotal step in validating next-generation optical communication technologies.
Astrolight's recent operational test of a mobile optical ground station achieved gigabit-per-second data rates over a 10-kilometre distance, demonstrating the viability of cost-effective, scalable ground stations built from commercial off-the-shelf components. This development is crucial in addressing the limitations of radio frequency spectrum and meeting the increasing demand for high-speed data transmission from LEO satellites.
The global satellite laser communications market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 40% between 2024 and 2032, reaching an estimated $15 billion. Astrolight's advancements in laser communication technologies position it as a key player in this burgeoning market, offering solutions that cater to both commercial and defence needs.

Atlas Space Operations activates new ground station in Rwanda
The Rwanda ground station receives data from six COSMIC-2 satellites, which continuously measure the Earths atmosphere and ionosphere using radio occultation. Atlas Space Operations has announced the activation of its latest ground station in Mwulire, Rwanda. This strategic expansion marks a major enhancement to the companys global ground network and significantly improves the capabilities of the COSMIC-2 satellite mission, which supports the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in monitoring global weather and space weather conditions. The newly activated Rwandan antenna receives data from six COSMIC-2 satellites. These satellites continuously measure atmospheric and ionospheric conditions through a process called radio occultation, providing NOAA with critical real-time data essential for accurate forecasting. Given the constantly changing nature of atmospheric and ionospheric activity, Atlas is tasked with delivering this data to NOAA in under 60 seconds, a performance standard the company consistently meets. Rwanda's geographical location makes it a key asset in supporting the COSMIC-2 constellation, allowing for an ideal number of satellite contacts. The ground station in Mwulire now complements Atlass existing infrastructure in Ghana and Tahiti, reinforcing the resilience and reach of the overall network. The establishment of the Rwandan station was initiated at NOAAs request and made possible through Atlass partnership with the Rwanda Space Agency. Corey Geer, CEO of Atlas Space Operations, said: 'The activation of our new antenna in Rwanda is a testament to the strength of our partnership with the Rwanda Space Agency and commitment to growing our network to best serve our customers. This strategic addition significantly enhances our ability to deliver critical COSMIC-2 data, ensuring that NOAA receives the vital information they need for accurate and timely atmospheric and ionospheric monitoring.' Atlas currently supports over 3,000 satellite contacts per month across its global network. From July 2019 through May 31, 2025, the company has successfully managed 156,653 NOAA satellite contacts while maintaining an impressive ground station availability rate of 99.36%.

India can secure oil even if Russian imports sanctioned, says minister
India is confident of meeting its oil needs from alternative sources if Russian supplies are hit by secondary sanctions, said Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas of India, on Thursday. Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump warned that countries purchasing Russian exports could face sanctions if Moscow fails to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine within 50 days. Separately, Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte warned on Wednesday that some countries, including India, could be hit very hard by the sanctions if they continued to do business with Russia. India should be able to deal with any problems with Russian imports by seeking supplies from other countries, Puri said. He noted there are many new suppliers coming onto the market such as Guyana and supply from existing producers such as Brazil and Canada. Additionally, India is increasing exploration and production activities. "I'm not worried at all. If something happens, we'll deal with it," Puri said at an industry event in New Delhi. "India has diversified the sources of supply and we have gone, I think, from about 27 countries that we used to buy from to about 40 countries now," he said. Responding to Rutte's comments, India's foreign ministry spokesperson said that securing energy needs was an "overriding priority" for the country, in which it was guided by what was on offer in markets and the "prevailing global circumstances". "We would particularly caution against any double standards on the matter," spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a regular media briefing. India's oil imports from Russia rose marginally in the first half of this year, with private refiners Reliance Industries Ltd and Nayara Energy making about half of the overall purchases from Moscow. Russia continued to be the top supplier to India, accounting for about 35% of India's overall supplies, followed by Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates, the data showed. In case Russian supplies are hit, Indian Oil Corp will "go back to the same template (of supplies) as was used pre-Ukraine crisis when Russian supplies to India were below 2%," company chairman A S Sahney told reporters at the event.
