Win in India decider would be 'shift' for England

BBC News2 days ago
Winning Tuesday's one-day series decider against India would help "shift" the narrative around the England women's team, says all-rounder Charlie Dean.England levelled the three-match series with victory in a rain-shortened match at Lord's on Saturday, leaving the contest tied at 1-1 going into the final match at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday.Following their Ashes hammering by Australia in the winter, England won all six matches against West Indies at the start of the summer but were well beaten by India in the T20 series which followed."Losing the T20 series and the first game of the 50-over, it would feel like a bit of a shift," Dean said."To be able to pull that off would be something really special and would give a lot of girls a lot of confidence going to India."
Tuesday is England's last official fixture in the 50-over format before their World Cup campaign begins on 3 October against South Africa in India.A regular criticism of England of recent years has been their ability to win bilateral series outside of World Cups, only to lose pressure matches at the major tournaments. They lost to South Africa in the semi-finals of the 2023 T20 World Cup and exited last year's event at the group stage after crumbling in a winner-takes-all match against West Indies.Tuesday's decider will be as close as possible to such moments outside of the global events."We have seen bilateral series where done really but when come to the World Cup games or tournament cricket we have not had the momentum or been clinical in those pressure moments," Dean said."Any chance we can emulate that in bilateral series is perfect practice."Obviously we want to win, but even if we don't we can take those learnings, keep getting better and set ourselves up to have a good 50-over competition. That is the most important."No matter how the game goes tomorrow that we really reflect and learn from the situation."

Liverpool are backed as 15/8 favourites with Sky Bet to retain their Premier League crown next season, but which team are expected to run them close?

Liverpool have been backed by Sky Bet to retain the Premier League title in 2025/26. The Reds romped home last season to take the crown by 10 points in what was Arne Slot's first year in charge of the club. Despite their triumph, they have been busy strengthening this summer, with Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez all arriving, while Hugo Ekitike is also set to join. And, according to Sky Bet, Slot is fancied to go back-to-back, with his side valued as 15/8 favourites to win the Premier League in 2025-26. Their closest rivals for the title are expected to be Arsenal, who come in at 2/1, while Man City are priced at 11/4. Chelsea raised eyebrows with a sensational Club World Cup triumph, but they remain fourth favourites at 15/2 to follow that up with the Premier League title. Meanwhile, Man United's top flight trophy drought has now passed 12 years, but they are massive outsiders at 33/1 to return to their glory days next season. Tottenham are priced even further out at 40/1 while Newcastle come in at 22/1. Sky Bet Premier League title odds: Liverpool: 15/8 Arsenal: 2/1 Man City: 11/4 Chelsea: 15/2 Newcastle: 22/1 Man United: 33/1 Tottenham: 40/1

I feel like I need to kick on and take another step in the right direction."Thompson added that Eustace's background playing in the same position and subsequent advice has helped him progress as a footballer, something he is keen to do more of under the head coach's guidance."[Eustace has] been huge. He's obviously played as a midfielder in his career, so I'm always taking information from him on the pitch, and he's always talking to you and helping you."There's a different side of it, a different twist on it, and it's good. I can really see myself improving and you can see the difference already."The gaffer has been a massive influence on me here. 100%."Listen to the full interview with Liam Thompson and more on BBC Sounds.

Nicolas Jackson transfer odds: Man Utd favourites to sign £80m Chelsea striker, Aston Villa, West Ham and Newcastle next

MANCHESTER UNITED are frontrunners to sign Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, according to bookmaker talkSPORT BET. The Red Devils are eager to strengthen their forward line this summer, and the Senegal international has emerged as a potential target. However, United aren't alone in their pursuit. Premier League rivals Aston Villa, West Ham and Newcastle are all firmly in the frame, with each prominent in the betting markets. Jackson, 24, joined Chelsea from Villarreal in June 2023 in a deal worth £31.8million, signing an eight-year contract at Stamford Bridge. He has since scored 30 goals and provided 12 assists for the Blues, but now finds himself slipping down the pecking order following the arrivals of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro. His frustrations were further compounded after being left on the bench for Chelsea's Club World Cup final victory over PSG - perhaps as punishment for being sent off twice in his previous four appearances for the club. SunSport understand Chelsea's preferred plan is to have two No9s battling for the starting role. However, club chiefs could be persuaded to part ways with Jackson if their £80m valuation is met. It's also undestood that Jackson has declined offers from Napoli and AC Milan in preference of staying in the Premier League. talkSPORT BET have United leading the market at 3/1. Jackson is reportedly one of the strikers on United's radar with BBC journalist Nizaar Kinsella claiming that United have approached Jackson's representative Ali Barat. Aston Villa are next at 8/1 with Jackson having previously worked under Unai Emery at Villarreal. A host of other clubs are priced at 12/1 - including AC Milan, any Saudi club, West Ham and any Turkish club. Newcastle are further out at 16/1, although a move to St James' Park could hinge on the outcome of their pursuit of Brentford forward Yoane Wissa. *18+ New Customers Only.
