Three takeaways from the Lionesses' Euro 2025 success

BBC News15 hours ago
England have made history and have won their second European Championship tournament in a row. They beat Spain 3-1 on penalties with Chloe Kelly taking it home for England, smashing the final penalty in the net! Take a bow.It was a tense contest in Basel as Mariona Caldentey gave Spain the lead and Alessia Russo drew level for the Lionesses before the game went to penalties. The spot kick success capped off a memorable evening in Switzerland for Serena Wiegman's team. But the road to lifting the trophy wasn't easy, and, along the way, England faced lots of setbacks and overcame adversity, from surviving the 'group of death', to the heroic comeback against both Sweden and Italy, not forgetting THAT penalty shootout in the quarter finals. It's rare that success ever comes without some setbacks. Thinking about what we can learn from the Lionesses' incredible journey, we've gathered some advice from our Bitesize Study Support archives to help you overcome the challenges you might face as you work towards your goals – whatever they might be! So let's kick off…
1. Boost your resilienceLike England's journey to success in Switzerland, the run up to GCSE or Nationals results day can be like a rollercoaster for your emotions – you have ups and downs, and twists and turns. But there are things you can do to help build resilience to help get you through to the other side. Our expert Dr Heather Branigan told us that setbacks are an inevitable part of school and life, "so developing skills in resilience is a great way to keep going in the face of adversity". Heather says, "mindfulness activities can be useful for developing resilience. So, the next time you start to feel stressed or anxious, take five minutes to just pause".
2. Find out what motivates youThe thought of getting their hands on the EURO trophy was just the kind of motivation that Serena Wiegman's team needed in moments of difficulty, and you can help get through difficult moments in your studies, like results day, by figuring out what motivates you.Author Natasha Devon told us, "people who understand what drives them are better able to make choices which lead to them being happy, healthy and fulfilled." Natasha continues, "taking time to understand your intrinsic motivators now will really prove helpful in the future." You can find out more about what intrinsic motivators are in this article.3. Don't focus on perfectionIt would be amazing if England played perfectly and won every game 10-0, but in reality there were times when they just had to get the job done, like with their 2-1 fightback against Italy in the semi finals. We could do well to remember that we don't need to aim for perfection in our studies, especially on results day when things might not go the way we expected.Natasha Devon says 'Make GOOD ENOUGH your new best friend…instead of focussing on a perfect result, focus on a good job." Dr Radha has some great advice for after results day, she said "If you got the grades you wanted then celebrate yourself, if you didn't get the grades you wanted…celebrate yourself anyway!"If you've found the above tips helpful and want to know more about ways you can improve your studies, then we have plenty more tips in our study guides, why not check them out?

Penders joins Strasbourg on loan

Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders was always likely to join Strasbourg this summer and it has finally been made official. The 19-year-old is highly regarded at Stamford Bridge and manager Enzo Maresca took him to the United States as part of his Club World Cup-winning team to take a closer look at the Belgian. However, Penders has only made 26 senior appearances in his short career so a loan move was always likely. Strasbourg are also owned by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital's BlueCo and thus have emerged as the primary destination for young players to go on loan from Chelsea, especially ones the club feel have a long term future inside their project. Penders perfectly fits the BlueCo ideology of player development, but is making a significant step up from Belgian football given Strasbourg have qualified for European football this former number one Djordje Petrovic - who joined Bournemouth for £25m this summer after winning Strasbourg's player of the year award - will also be difficult. Yet Penders is seen as a keeper who some day is capable of reaching the highest level within the Chelsea/Strasbourg system - and this is an opportunity to live up to those beliefs.

Joey Barton branded 'bitter and twisted' after England's Euro 2025 win

Football fans were quick to hit back at Joey Barton after he – predictably – made several vile comments about England's Euro 2025 triumph. The Lionesses were crowned back-to-back European champions on Sunday after defeating world champions Spain in Basel. The match finished 1-1 after extra-time before England prevailed 3-1 in the penalty shootout thanks to the heroics of Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton. The nation rejoiced as Leah Williamson and her team lifted the trophy, with this English football's third major tournament victory and the first on foreign soil. Not everyone was pleased however, with former footballer Barton, a controversial and outspoken figure both during and after his playing career, voicing his displeasure. 'Well done to the Lioness winning the Nonsense Pottery Trophy,' the ex-Manchester City star posted on Twitter, just minutes after Kelly's scored the winning spot-kick. 'Those penalties were borderline embarrassing again. Well done to the Lioness winning the Nonsense Pottery penalties were borderline embarrassing ever ask for equal pay are miles off it.🐕💨 — Joey Barton (@Joey7Barton) July 27, 2025 'Don't ever ask for equal pay again. Youse are miles off it.' The 42-year-old, who earlier this year was found guilty of assaulting his wife at their family home, had previously taken aim at Sir Keir Starmer. He bluntly replied 'do one' to the Prime Minister's tweet that wished the Lionesses well ahead of the final. This is the latest in a long line of vile remarks Barton, whose England career lasted just 12 minutes, has made about the women's game. In January 2024, he referred to former players turned pundits Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward as 'the Fred and Rose West of football commentary'. Fans have clearly had enough of Barton's comments, with one replying to his post: 'Imagine being this triggered, bitter and twisted because women achieved something you could only dream of.' 'Sad man can't accept women have done something the men have never achieved. Speaks volumes,' another said. 'Grow up,' was one reply, with another saying: 'Mental how you've been to court more times than you've been to Wembley during your playing career.' 'They've literally won the Euros more than you've played games for England,' read one comment, while another simply asked: 'Who are you?' Unfortunately, Barton's tirade continued on Monday morning as he replied to one fan who had posted a video of him skying a penalty during his Man City days, with the caption: 'Maybe Chloe Kelly could teach him how to take one.' More Trending 'Go and watch the 4-4 Arsenal game ya dope,' his lewd reply began. 'Full size goalies. I would score 1000/1000 against Mary Earps taking each pen with my d**k. 'And 2000/2000 against the midget they had in net last night. Stick to knitting.' Again fans ridiculed 'rattled' Barton with many pointing out the obvious: 'Talking about full size goalies yet couldn't hit the target?' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
