Thanjavur scholar wins PM's praise for preserving, promoting Tamil manuscripts

For the past decade, Maran Manivasagam, aka Mani Maran, has been conducting evening classes near his house where students, working professionals, and researchers learn to read Tamil manuscripts. "I was concerned that the upcoming generation might not learn to interpret Tamil manuscripts. So, I started classes under the name 'Eadagam' to enlighten them about interpreting Tamil palm leaf manuscripts and to understand ancient knowledge," Maran told TOI.
The scholar has been working in the Tamil Manuscript department of Saraswathi Mahal Library in Thanjavur for around 25 years. Maran has a doctorate in the subject 'Water Management in Ancient Tamil Literature' from Bharathidasan University. He has been collecting, researching, preserving, and digitising ancient manuscripts on history, science, astrology, medicine, and literature.
On Sunday, Maran was taken by surprise as the Prime Minister spoke about him in 'Mann Ki Baat'.
Modi called Maran an inspirational personality who has taken the responsibility of preserving extraordinary knowledge. "If such efforts are made across the country, our ancient knowledge will not remain confined within walls; it will become a part of the consciousness of the new generation," he said.
Modi cited a govt initiative called 'Gyan Bharatam Mission' in this year's budget, under which ancient manuscripts would be digitised.

A National Digital Repository would be created, where students and researchers from all over the world would be able to connect with India's knowledge, he said.
Thanking the Prime Minister for making him known across the country, Maran said the gesture is encouraging him to do better. "I dedicate the appreciation to my family, historians, colleagues, and superior officials who have been supporting me," he said.

‘Operation Sindoor strikes timed to avoid civilian casualties during prayers'
Nagpur: During Operation Sindoor , the strikes on the Pakistani terror establishments were deliberately timed between the last and the first namaz (prayer). This was done to ensure that no innocent civilians, who would have gathered for prayers at that time, were harmed, said Lt General (retd) Vinod Khandare, former principal advisor to the ministry of defence. Khandare was in the advisor's post when India struck targets in Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. Talking to TOI on the sidelines of his lecture organised by Jan Manch, he explained that the last namaz of the day takes place in the night and the first happens early in the morning. The idea was to strike only the terrorists and not the civilians, who may have gathered after the prayer calls. Khandare said that as India hit nine terror establishments, it made the terrorists realise that they were not safe at their hideouts in Paksitan. They may have secured themselves from attacks on the ground, but India struck from the air, he said. The debris will remind even the locals or other visitors that India struck deep in their base, said Khandare. Replying to a question on concerns over cases against security forces personnel, Khandare said there was a time when the entire bar council of Jammu and Kashmir was radicalised. They would take up cases against security forces without any charges. This was from 2007 till as late as around 2016. The situation has changed now, he said.

10 years, 375 Sundays: PM Modi praises Lucknow team's efforts to clean Gomti
Lucknow: Lauding the efforts by the public at the grassroots level to make cities and towns clean, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his 'Mann Ki Baat' radio programme on Sunday, acknowledged a team's tireless commitment to cleaning the Gomti river every Sunday for the past 10 years. Without naming individuals, he said, "Every Sunday for the last 10 years, tirelessly, without stopping, the members of this team are engaged in the cleanliness work." The team referred to is led by Ranjit Singh, corporator of Mankameshwar Ward, who, along with dozens of dedicated volunteers, has been conducting the weekly cleanliness drive under the 'Swachh Paryavaran Andolan Sena'. On Sunday, marking the 375th consecutive week of the campaign, around 5 quintals of waste were removed from the riverbed at Jhulelal Ghat. About 60 volunteers participated in the drive, which lasted two hours in the morning. "This is not about publicity. We don't do it for photos. It's about real work, real impact," said a volunteer. Expressing gratitude over the PM's words, the corporator said, "It is an honour that our small but consistent efforts reached the ears of the Prime Minister.
