TOP SECRET's One-of-a-Kind VR32 Stealth GT-R Set to Headline TAS 2025
The highly anticipated showcase will take place from 8 to 10 August 2025 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), where fans will also get the chance to meet the mastermind behind the machine, Kazuhiko 'Smokey' Nagata, now making his third consecutive appearance at the event.
At the heart of the VR32 Stealth GT-R is an ambitious and meticulously executed fusion: the 3.8-litre powerplant from the modern R35 GT-R has been transplanted into the shell of the iconic BNR32.
This fusion of eras has resulted in a one-off creation that exemplifies engineering excellence and performance-driven design. The car, the only one of its kind in the world, was built entirely by Nagata himself.
The build involved far more than just an engine swap. The project required extensive chassis fabrication and reinforcement to accommodate the high-performance R35 drivetrain.
The entire body underwent stitch welding, and additional tube bracing was incorporated beneath the front fenders to enhance chassis rigidity. The car also features a full roll cage for added structural integrity and safety.
In terms of power, the VR32 is nothing short of monstrous. Generating a staggering 1,072hp, the engine is enhanced with a TOP SECRET BB800 turbine and JUN H-section connecting rods, highlighting the level of performance engineering that went into this unique machine.
Visually, the car commands attention with its Stealth Grey paintwork, a full TOP SECRET aerodynamic kit, and aggressive stance achieved through NEKO TOP SECRET Ver.SPL Ride Pitch Adjustment suspension paired with SWIFT springs.
The braking system is borrowed from the R35 GT-R, offering exceptional stopping power via six-piston Brembo callipers at the front and four-piston units at the rear, clamping onto massive 380mm discs.
Rounding off the exterior package are 18-inch OZ Racing Challenge HLT wheels, measuring 10J ET25 at the front and 11J ET60 at the rear, wrapped in Bridgestone POTENZA RE-71RS tyres sized 275/35R18 all around.
The R35 influence continues into the interior, where the original BNR32 cabin has been comprehensively reimagined. The dashboard, instrument cluster, centre console, and door panels from the R35 have been seamlessly integrated into the classic chassis.
The conversion is completed with TOP SECRET's own R35 GT-R steering wheel and a TRUST Sirius boost meter, blending modern functionality with nostalgic design.
Beyond the display, visitors can browse a dedicated TOP SECRET merchandise booth and meet Smokey Nagata in person – a rare opportunity for automotive fans and tuning enthusiasts.
Tickets for the Tokyo Auto Salon Kuala Lumpur 2025 are now available, priced at RM48 for a one-day adult pass, RM30 for children aged 6 to 12, and RM120 for a Family Combo (two adults and two children). Another legend calls it a day - Tamiya, the man who brought perfection to plastic race car models, dies at 90
Under the leadership of Shunsaku Tamiya, Tamiya Inc. gained worldwide popularity for producing kits that excelled in quality and historical accuracy. -- PHOTOS: TAMIYAUSA/FACEBOOK SHIZUOKA (Japan): Chairman of the Japanese plastic model kit maker Tamiya Inc., Shunsaku Tamiya, known for its radio-controlled cars and Mini 4WD models, has died, the company has announced. He was 90, Kyodo News reported. Tamiya, who died of undisclosed causes, was credited with raising the global profile of the Shizuoka-based toy maker. While the funeral was held privately by close relatives, the company plans to hold a memorial event. The Shizuoka native long served as the company's president, helping raise his hometown's standing in the plastic model industry through trade and hobby shows, according to the maker. After graduating from Waseda University in Tokyo in 1958, he joined Tamiya Shoji & Co., which was then operated by his father, Yoshio. Tamiya became president of the company in 1984 and was named chairman in 2008. For the record, Tamiya led the company that bore his family's name for more than four decades, turning it into one of the world's largest makers of build-it-yourself plastic model kits of race cars and military vehicles. Since producing its first such kit in 1960, of the Japanese World War II battleship Yamato, Tamiya Inc has become a globally known brand that also produces remote-controlled cars. Under the leadership of Tamiya, who replaced his father as the company's president, Tamiya Inc won popularity worldwide for making kits that excelled in quality and historical detail. In 1967, one of its miniature models so faithfully reproduced a Formula One racing car, down to the location of a starter battery beneath the driver's seat, that the maker of the original vehicle, Honda Motor, wondered if he had access to trade secrets but decided to let it pass. His pursuit of accuracy also once took him to the embassy of the Soviet Union in Tokyo, where he sought details about Warsaw Pact tanks. This drew the attention of Japan's public security bureau, which placed him under surveillance for a time. Tamiya was serving as the company's chair at the time of his death. According to the company, he still enjoyed standing at the entrance to an annual trade show near Tamiya's headquarters in Shizuoka, a city south of Tokyo, to watch the children come in. Although the company continues to produce model kits in Shizuoka, it also opened a factory in the Philippines in 1994. -- Agencies

Cautious outlook ahead for auto stocks
HLIB Research revised the total industry volume up to 770,000 from 750,000 for this year compared with 818,000 last year. PETALING JAYA: Automotive stocks continue to be weighed by a cloudy outlook for vehicle sales, with both national and non-national marques showing declines, according to figures released by the Malaysia Automotive Association (MAA) for June. Analysts covering automotive stocks remained cautious about the outlook as sales in the first half of the year dropped nearly 5% compared with the similar period a year ago. UOB Kay Hian (UOBKH) Research has maintained an 'underweight' call on automotive stocks, as competition remained intense with limited margin recovery and earnings upside. Its top pick remained Pecca Group Bhd , a producer of car seat covers, in which the research house has a 'buy' call and a target price (TP) of RM1.68. UOBKH Research noted that automotive stocks' valuation of 11.8 times was fair, given the muted earnings outlook and limited catalysts with upside potential likely capped in the near term. TA Research has maintained a 'neutral' recommendation, with the TIV forecast for this year of 700,000 units under review (MAA projected 780,000). The research house has a 'hold' call on Sime Darby Bhd with a TP of RM1.66, and 'sell' ratings on MBM Resources Bhd with a TP of RM4.31 and Bermaz Auto Bhd with a TP of 75 sen. Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research, which has also maintained a 'neutral' stance on the stocks, pointed to intense competition from the entry of multiple new electric vehicle players challenging non-national marques amid competitive pricing strategies. It revised the total industry volume up to 770,000 from 750,000 for this year compared with 818,000 last year. Despite the challenges, the research house expected the market to normalise and saw upside potential, supported by exciting new model launches throughout the year and intensified marketing efforts by original equipment manufacturers aiming to sustain sales, albeit likely at the cost of margins. 'Order backlogs continued to decline in the second quarter of 2025 and are expected to soften further in the coming quarters, in line with weakening consumer sentiment amid a slowing economic outlook and the anticipated petrol subsidy rationalisation in the second half of 2025,' the research house said. HLIB Research projected automotive earnings to decline this year, driven by lower sales volumes and higher operating costs from more aggressive promotional activities but this would be partially offset by a stronger ringgit against the US dollar and Japanese yen. According to the research house, its top pick is MBM Resources with a 'buy' call and a TP of RM7.10, supported by exposure to national marques under Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd and dividend yields.
