Madrassa body plans stir over school timing changes

Time of Indiaa day ago
Kozhikode: Samastha Kerala Madrassa Management Association, which oversees the functioning of madrassas under Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, warned of launching an agitation against the LDF govt's decision to revise school timings, claiming that it adversely impacts madrassa operations in state.
Addressing a news conference on Tuesday, the association's office-bearers told the media that details of the protests would be announced during a convention at Kozhikode Town Hall at 10am on Thursday.
Association general secretary E Moideen Faizi Puthanazhi said the decision to extend working hours of schools was made unilaterally without discussions. He said the new schedule was affecting the functioning of over 11,000 madrassas under Samastha in which around 12 lakh students were studying.
He added that despite Samastha president Mohammed Jifri Muthukoya Thangal personally requesting chief minister
Pinarayi Vijayan
to roll back the new schedule, govt did not respond positively. Faizi also recalled that a similar attempt was made by the previous LDF govt (2006–11) when MA Baby was the education minister. He said that move was withdrawn after widespread protests.
State govt had issued an order in June extending the daily time for Classes VIII to X in govt, aided and unaided schools under the state syllabus by 15 minutes in morning and afternoon sessions, except Fridays. The change aims to meet the target of 220 working days and 1,100 instructional hours as stipulated by the Right to Education Act and Kerala Education Rules.

Govt transport facilities lifeline for edu in Maha villages without schools, says minister Bhuse

Pune: Lawmakers seem to have different views about the situation of school education in the state's rural parts. While Parner MLA Kashinath Date recently told the Assembly that 8,123 villages across Maharashtra do not have either primary or upper primary schools, presenting a grim situation for rural education, school education minister Dada Bhuse said the statistics were "partially true" and that children were not missing out on education as the state govt was providing a facility to transport them to nearby villages that have schools. Date had based his statement in the Assembly on statistics from the Union education ministry's Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) that collects data from all recognised and unrecognised schools in India — from pre-primary to Std XII. The data showed that of the 8,123 Maharashtra villages mentioned by UDISE, 1,650 had no primary schools and 6,563 no upper primary schools. He said: "The children are not missing out on education because of unavailability of schools in their villages. We have made adequate transport arrangements to ensure schooling for such children in nearby villages." Bhuse said: "According to Part 3 Section 6 (3) (1) of the Right to Education Act, 2009, transportation facility is provided under Samagra Shiksha to students from settlements where schools are not available within the prescribed area limits — 1km for primary level, 3km for upper primary and 5km for secondary levels". Senior officials in the education department said a provision of Rs 60,000 has been sanctioned for transportation facilities at the rate of Rs 600 per student for 10 months. An official said a detailed survey would soon be conducted to assess the educational needs of the villages without schools and, accordingly, new schools would be planned in such villages. As per the UDISE data, the situation is grim in the Ratnagiri, Parbhani, Yavatmal, Solapur and Ahmednagar regions where maximum number of villages lack schools, said Date. Places such as Pune, Nashik and Thane are also in the bracket with few schools. However, the deteriorating infrastructure in several existing schools compounds the crisis. For instance, in Chandrapur's Sonapur village, students have been studying under the open sky for two months after the school's roof was blown away. Date said: "These shortcomings in the education department underline the urgent need for stronger policy and immediate intervention to improve rural education in Maharashtra. " Regarding the infrastructure shortcomings, Bhuse said as per a govt decision dated June 29, 2000, if a permanent drinking water facility is not available, instructions have been given to make arrangements for temporary storage of drinking water. Also, as per a govt decision dated April 16, 2025, instructions have been given to provide pure drinking water through tap connections under Jal Jeevan Mission Minor Mineral Scheme. Under Samagra Shiksha, 1,668 separate toilets for boys and 1,087 for girls are being constructed this year. "A districtwise review has been conducted to identify the worst-affected districts and prepare an action plan. Govt is focusing on steps to avert educational losses and ensure that children in all villages get the equaly opportunity to study," a senior education official told TOI on the condition of anonymity.

BJP accuses LDF of maliciously attempting to link Muraleedharan to suspected ‘Pakistani spy' Jyoti Malhotra

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader V. Muraleedharan accused the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government of attempting to link him maliciously to popular YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who was arrested on espionage charges by the Haryana police in May. The BJP leadership, which had accused the State Tourism department of hiring Ms. Malhotra to promote holiday destinations in Kerala, appeared to find itself in a sticky spot after a video of the social media influencer interviewing Mr. Muraleedharan on board a Vande Bharat train in 2024 appeared on the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] media handles on Tuesday. The videos, which went viral, surfaced shortly after BJP leaders demanded the resignation of the Tourism Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas, on the grounds of hiring a 'Pakistani spy' under the 'pretext' of promoting Kerala's holiday destinations. Former BJP State president K. Surendran had accused the LDF of rolling out the red carpet for an alleged spy while frowning upon the use of the image of Bharat Mata as a symbol of national unity. Mr. Muraleedharan stated that the LDF wanted to extricate itself from the controversy concerning the enlistment of a 'Pakistani operative' for the State's tourism promotion. He said the LDF went on the backfoot after documents revealed that the government had accorded the YouTuber the welcome befitting a State guest and also public funds for her services. He said the YouTuber had interviewed him impromptu during the maiden journey of Vande Bharat trains in Kerala. 'Opposition and ruling front leaders were with me, he said. Mr. Muraleedharan noted that the Railways had extended no formal invitation to Ms Malhotra to promote Vande Bharath travel, unlike the State Tourism department. He demanded that the government owed the public an explanation, and the BJP was on the moral and political high ground. Later, Mr. Riyas countered the accusation, stating that the government had sought her services in good faith and the administration could not have anticipated that the YouTuber would get entangled in an espionage case. On Wednesday, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said that the government was not at fault. He said prima facie the Tourism department had hired the influencer in good faith.

Shashi Tharoor for Kerala CM? Congress MP tops survey as UDF's best bet

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has emerged as the top choice as the UDF's chief ministerial candidate Kerala, his home state, a latest survey has found. The survey showed that as many as 28.3 per cent support the four-time Lok Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) of the Congress party from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. Assembly elections in Kerala are scheduled to conclude by May next year. The Congress-led United Democratic Forum will face the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF)—an alliance of left-wing political parties led by the Communist Party of India—in the upcoming elections. The Kerala Vote Vibe Survey 2026 has revealed a strong wave of anti-incumbency in Kerala. The Opposition UDF, comprising the Congress, is positioned as a change alternative, and the National Democratic Alliance is fast gaining ground as a third option. The Congress-led United Democratic Forum will face the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF)—an alliance of left-wing political parties led by the Communist Party of India—in the upcoming elections. 'The Kerala 2026 edition of State Vibe captures a state at a political crossroads marked by a rising anti-incumbency wave, a clear desire for change, and a leadership vacuum in both major alliances. While the UDF holds a narrow trust edge, the LDF faces credibility fatigue, and the NDА continues to gain ground. With shifting sentiments across age and gender, the stage is set for a high-stakes electoral battle,' said Amitabh Tiwari, political strategist and founder of VoteVibe, a newly-founded firm at the forefront of political research and sentiment analysis. A gender-wise breakup of the findings showed more men (30 per cent) backing Tharoor as the UDF's CM face than women (27 per cent). The support is higher among those aged 55 years and above (34.2 per cent) than those aged 18 to 24 (20.3 per cent), the survey said. Within the ruling LDF, the incumbent Chief Minister is no longer the popular choice as the alliance's face, as per the survey, with only 17.5 percent voting to see Pinarayi Vijayan as the CM's face. Instead, former health minister Kerala minister KK Shailaja has emerged as the top choice among voters, with 24.2 per cent backing her as the LDF's chief ministerial face. Tharoor, an author, and former diplomat has been representing Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, as Member of Parliament since 2009. He has also been a union minister during UPA government. Tharoor is currently the Chairman of Committee on External Affairs. He has never contested assembly elections. He started his electoral career by contesting from Thiruvananthapuram in 2009 on Congress ticket. Tharoor, who took the India case post Operation Sindoor in foreign countries while heading an all-party delegation earlier this month, has seemingly riled his party for showing support for the Narendra Modi government over recent military actions across the border in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Some Congress leaders even accused Tharoor of being a 'super spokesperson' for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. I have some differences of opinion with the party, and I will discuss them inside the party. On June 19, Tharoor admitted that he has some differences of opinion with the Congress party. Tharoor, however, said that he will discuss these differences privately when someone from the party approaches him.
