New Selangor rugby coach prioritises 'process over prize'
Suhaimi said Selangor experienced Kelantan's quality first-hand during a recent friendly.
"We competed in a four-way friendly series with Kelantan, Royal Malaysian Police and Malaysian Universities recently," said Suhaimi.
"And I believe Kelantan will be our strongest rivals for the National Sevens, next best is probably Johor.
"Kelantan have many national team starters in their side. Their squad is packed with experienced players who are in peak form.
"The National Sevens will be a battle of hard work and experience."
Suhaimi, who is former Singapore national head coach, joined Selangor in late April and immediately got to work preparing the squad for the national meet.
"Preparations have gone well and we managed to win the Perlis Sevens last month," said the Singaporean.
"But I am not thinking about whether we can win the National Sevens. From day one, I have asked our players to focus on our day to day performances and tick the boxes so the outcome will take care of itself.
"Of course we want to win gold - we train to win - however, we do not want to be derailed from our main objective of being better daily."
Suhaimi added that he was pleasantly surprised by the quality of players in the current Selangor squad.
"If I was the national team coach I would have a headache selecting players as we have so much talent from just one state (Selangor)," he added.
"The question is whether we can develop and fully utilise the talent we have. My goal is to create a high-performance culture at Selangor and help these players flourish."

"I think it's not easy for us to score two goals against Selangor, but that's our game plan, we don't hide any tactics." Kinoshi said that his Selangor team have had a good preseason and, without giving too much away about his squad, said that the Red Giants will have another friendly match after playing the Asia Warriors. Selangor star Faisal Halim, who also joined the pre-match press conference, said: "This is the year I will bounce back and regain my form. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Golf Association (SGA) will build on the State players' recent success at the Malaysian School Sports Council (MSSM) golf tournament in their preparation for the Malaysian Games (Sukma) next year. Its president Nash Hon said this on Thursday at the appreciation reception hosted by the State body at Sabah Golf and Country Club for the Under-18 boy and girl teams, who both emerged as runners-up in the tournament held in May. The boys' total score of 691 saw them finishing seven strokes behind champions Selangor, while the girls who managed 733, also came in second behind Selangor who had a 693. Mohamad Rafiq Anugerah Ali was the toast in the men's team with Ryan Lam Tse Ziang and Muhammad Arif Izwan Nordin. He almost made it to the podium in the individual event as he led the pack on day one with an impressive 70 and was joint lead the following day with 73 before faltering on the final round with 76 to finish fourth. Jamie Tan Huan Ying, who led the charge for the girls with Dynneva Joyce Donni and Shannon Sim Xuan also missed the individual medal by finishing fourth with her scores of 74-80-76. 'We are proud of our players and confident in our chances of clinching the MSSM title next year. SGA remains fully committed to supporting JPN (State Education Department) in the development of junior golfers, as MSSM serves as a vital stepping stone for our Sukma selection. 'We are confident in the potential of our young talents, and their MSSM performance is a clear indication of their readiness for Sukma next year. We must begin early to identify and nurture our medal prospects,' he said. He also revealed that SGA is currently in talks with the Sarawak Golf Association to revive the SGA Cup Golf Championship, which has been on hiatus for nearly a decade. 'The event is tentatively scheduled for early 2026, with several slots reserved for selected Sukma players as part of their early preparations.' He added that funding will be a major challenge for them as the selected Sukma players will have to train and acclimate to the golf courses in Kuala Lumpur. 'Unlike other sports, every golf course is different—it takes time to 'marry' the course. Unfortunately, this preparation comes at a significant cost, but I can assure that SGA will continue to advocate for our athletes, and our focus remains on ensuring Sabah's junior golfers are well-equipped and competitive on the national stage,' he added. Meanwhile, at the reception, apart from incentives awarded to all the team members except Mohd Arif, who was absent, special recognition was also given to Mohamad Rafiq Anugerah, Ryan Lam, and Jamie Tan for their outstanding performances in the Individual categories. Hon said the incentives were aimed to encourage continued dedication and improvement among the players. Veteran Fazly's back with Selangor – and their defence couldn't feel safer
True Selangor stalwart: Fazly's unwavering spirit and commitment became the driving force behind his return to the Red Giants. PETALING JAYA: In a move that has taken many by surprise, seasoned leftback Fazly Mazlan has rejoined Selangor – a decision that coach Katsuhito Kinoshi openly admits he did not see coming. But despite that, Kinoshi welcomes the move with open arms. 'Yes, I was very surprised when I was informed that he wanted to come back,' said the Japanese tactician. 'But I like him. I really do.' Kinoshi revealed that it was Fazly's unwavering spirit and deep commitment that became the driving force behind his return to the Red Giants. Despite the defender being released from the squad at the end of the season, the coach emphasised that desire trumps all. Fazly had an offer to join Super League newcomers Immigration but Selangor said they needed cover in the fullback spots, and he did not think twice. If you play with all your heart, sacrifice for the team, and give 100 percent in every match, you can continue playing well into your 30s - 32, 35 even,' the coach added. Beyond his on-field capabilities, Fazly's return brings much-needed guidance to a transitioning squad. As Selangor look to the future with a new generation of talent, veterans like Fazly serve as the bridge between experience and potential. 'Having senior players like Fazly is not just about technical aspects and experience. It's also about mentoring the younger generation who will one day lead this team,' Kinoshi explained. The timing of his return couldn't be more critical as the Red Giants are preparing for their Charity Shield game against Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri on Aug 8. 'We have a very important match coming up. The presence of experienced players like Fazly is a huge asset for games like this,' Kinoshi said. Fazly's story comes full circle, having once been a key pillar in the Selangor line-up before his release. Now, with shifts in the club's structure and renewed ambitions, he's back to reclaim his place - not just in the team but in the hearts of Selangor fans.
