Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Air India Provides Interim Compensation To Families Of 168 Victims
Air India said it has released the interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the families of 147 passengers and 19 on-ground victims of the June 12 Ahmedabad plane crash.
Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Over a month after the deadly plane crash in Ahmedabad, Air India on Saturday said it has released the interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the families of 168 victims – 147 passengers and 19 people on the ground – so far, and the requisite documents of 52 others have been verified.
Air India flight AI 171, operated with Boeing 787-8, en route to London Gatwick, crashed soon after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, killing 241 of the 242 passengers onboard and another 19 on the ground. All victims were identified, and their bodies were handed over to the families for the last rites.
In a statement, Air India said, 'Over a month ago, Air India started releasing interim payment of Rs 25 lakh to the affected families, to help them meet their immediate financial needs. The interim payment will be adjusted against any final compensation."
'Air India has, so far, released the interim compensation to the families of 147 of the 229 deceased passengers and also the 19 who lost their lives at the accident site. In addition, the requisite documents of 52 others have been verified, to whose families the interim compensation will be released progressively."
'The Trust will also provide aid and assistance for alleviation of any trauma or distress suffered by the first responders, medical and disaster relief professionals, social workers, and governmental staff who provided invaluable institutional support and service in the aftermath of the accident," said Air India in its statement.
Last month, Air India said a centralised helpdesk had been activated to assist families in processing claims for the interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the families of the victims and the sole survivor, and to help address immediate financial needs.
The interim compensation began being released from June 20, which will be in addition to Rs 1 crore to the Rs 1 crore payment announced by the Tata Group.
On Tuesday, Air India said it has completed the 'precautionary" inspection of the locking mechanism of the fuel control switch (FCS) on its Boeing 787 and 737 aircraft fleet, and no issues were found.
This came after aviation safety regulator DGCA last week directed airlines to inspect the fuel switch locking system in their Boeing 787 and 737 planes by July 21 after the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) said in its preliminary report that fuel switches were cut off before the Air India plane crash last month.

SGB 2017 investors set for 250% returns: Here's all you need to know
Investors in the Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2017-18 Series II, issued in July 2017, are set to receive the maturity proceeds on July 28, 2025. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the final redemption price has been fixed at Rs 9,924 per gram, delivering more than 250 per cent returns for those who stayed invested for the full eight-year tenure. How the final payout was calculated According to the RBI's release dated July 25, 2025, the redemption price has been derived based on the simple average of closing gold prices of 999 purity, published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), over three working days in the preceding week (July 21–25). This calculation method is consistent with SGB scheme norms and ensures alignment with prevailing market prices. From Rs 2,830 to Rs 9,924: A solid gold gain The issue price of the SGB 2017-18 Series II was Rs 2,830 per gram (excluding the Rs 50 online discount). With the final redemption value now at Rs 9,924 per gram, investors have gained Rs 7,094 per gram over eight years, translating to an absolute return of 250.67 per cent, excluding interest income. In addition to the price appreciation, investors also earned 2.5 per cent annual simple interest, paid semi-annually, making the total effective yield even higher. Redemption process: What investors should know SGBs have a fixed maturity of eight years, with an early exit option after five years. One month prior to maturity, investors receive an intimation from their bank or broker. The proceeds are automatically credited to the registered bank account on the redemption date. It is important to update any change in bank details or email ID with the relevant intermediary before the maturity date to ensure a smooth payout. What are Sovereign Gold Bonds? SGBs are government securities issued by the RBI on behalf of the Government of India. Denominated in grams of gold, they offer a way to invest in gold without the costs and risks of holding it physically. They are particularly attractive due to: -Capital gains tax exemption if held till maturity -Backing by the sovereign guarantee

Mercedes-Benz To Allow Teams Calls While Driving, Internet Says ‘Made For Bengaluru'
Last Updated: Mercedes-Benz and Microsoft's collaboration marks the first time a car manufacturer has offered in-motion video call capabilities without distracting the driver with any content. Mercedes-Benz has joined hands with Microsoft to launch a feature that allows drivers to take video meetings while on the road. As surprising as it may sound, the luxury carmaker will now let users access Microsoft Teams Meetings from inside their vehicles even while driving. The new feature is being introduced through the Mercedes-Benz Operating System ( which debuts with the newly unveiled CLA model. It marks the first time a car manufacturer has offered in-motion video call capabilities without distracting the driver with any content. How Does It Work? Mercedes-Benz says the Teams Meetings integration will allow drivers to join calls using an in-built camera. This means drivers will be visible to other participants during a meeting. But to ensure safety, the driver will not be able to see video footage of other participants when the vehicle is in motion. 'Given the brand's focus on safety, the use of the camera abides by the laws of each country and has been approved for use while the vehicle is in motion. The meeting video stream turns off automatically as soon as the camera is activated to prevent driver distraction," Mercedes-Benz said in an official press release. One X user called it a feature 'not a single soul asked for." Another posted, 'Can't even have peace while driving now. Insane. Bring back the days of travel without constant connection." 'Peak integrating solutions into nobody's problem," someone else said. A person wrote, 'I think it is one of the funniest things I ever heard. We are going to make your commute more of a pain." The jokes continued on Team BHP, one of India's most popular car forums. 'Looks like it was specially made for Bengaluru. Anyway people are stuck in traffic, let's make the most of it," an individual jokingly shared. Another said, 'Oh that's great! Now they'll get to see me curse at the traffic all the way to my office now!" Microsoft 365 Copilot Also Onboard Beyond Teams video calls, the collaboration is also bringing Microsoft 365 Copilot to the Mercedes-Benz cabin. This will allow drivers to use voice commands to manage emails and manage daily tasks. The idea, as Mercedes-Benz puts it, is to create a 'third workspace."
